Fans of the classic RPG Final Fantasy 6 have been clamoring for a remake for years, and now the game’s original director, Yoshinori Kitase, has weighed in on the possibility.
In a recent interview, Kitase acknowledged that the game is incredibly special to Square, and acknowledged that “there are many Final Fantasy 6 fans inside the company and they often ask me: ‘when are we making six?'”
But he also threw cold water on the hopes of a swift remake, stating that it would likely take a staggering 20 years to faithfully recreate the sprawling world and intricate story of Final Fantasy 6.
That might be a little hyperbolic, but it’s probably not far off either.
Final Fantasy 6 is one of the most ambitious and complex RPGs ever created, and it would be a huge undertaking to do it justice. In fact, in June 2023, Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi said that redesigning the original game would be incredibly complex due to its pixel art and 2D format, requiring a complete overhaul of both the story and graphics.
And in this interview, Kitase pointed to the game’s massive scope, with its multiple playable characters, intricate political storylines, and operatic battles, as major hurdles to overcome. He also expressed concerns about meeting the expectations of longtime fans who hold the original game in such high regard.
Despite the challenges, Kitase didn’t completely rule out the possibility of a Final Fantasy 6 remake in the future, leaving open the possibility (even if slim) that if the right team and resources were available, he might be open to revisiting the project.
Maybe one day, when the stars align and Square has the time and talent to do it right, they’ll be able to give Final Fantasy 6 the remake it deserves.
But for now, it’s just a dream.
