What You Need to Know

A fiery tweet from the official Spyro the Dragon Twitter account has sent fans into a frenzy, igniting speculation that a new installment in the beloved purple dragon’s franchise could be soaring onto consoles this year.

The tweet, posted on New Year’s Day, featured a simple image of Spyro gazing skyward alongside the enigmatic caption “2024 motto.”

While the tweet itself offered little concrete information, it was enough to set Spyro enthusiasts ablaze with excitement. After all, 2023 marked the fifth anniversary of the acclaimed Spyro Reignited Trilogy, a remaster of the original three Spyro games that breathed new life into the classic platformer.

With no new Spyro titles announced since then, the timing of this cryptic message has fueled fervent hope among fans that 2024 could finally see the return of their favorite flamethrower-wielding dragon.

Adding further fuel to the fire is the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the owner of the Spyro IP, by gaming giant Microsoft. In 2021, Activision Blizzard transitioned all of its core studios to develop the Call of Duty series. But new ownership may free up studios to return to beloved franchises like Spyro, reigniting the flames of nostalgia for a new generation of gamers. Or perhaps one of Microsoft’s other studios could take the reigns.

While the official Spyro camp remains tight-lipped about the meaning of the cryptic tweet, the outpouring of fan excitement is a testament to the enduring legacy of the purple dragon. Spyro’s endearing personality, challenging gameplay, and vibrant worlds have captivated gamers for over two decades, solidifying his place as a beloved gaming icon.

Whether or not 2024 truly marks the year of Spyro’s triumphant return remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: the fire of fan passion burns brighter than ever, fueled by the tantalizing embers of a single tweet. And if a new Spyro adventure does take flight, it’s sure to be a fiery reunion.
