Bloober Team, the developer of the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake, has expressed its unhappiness with the trailer that was released by Konami at the recent PlayStation State of Play.
In an interview with Polish investor news channel Inwestorzy.tv, Bloober Team president Piotr Babieno claimed the trailer, heavy on action sequences and frenetic editing, misrepresents the “spirit” of the original’s psychological horror and their faithful recreation.
Babieno acknowledged his pride in the remake’s quality. But his remarks also dripped with thinly veiled disapproval of Konami’s marketing choices.
“It is not the spirit of either what it used to be or what we are creating now. We are trying to fully reflect this romantic vision about the game, which debuted 22 years ago,” Babieno said. “We think that when players see the real gameplay, the real game, they will judge it in a completely different way.”
Konami has not yet responded to Babieno’s comments. However, the company did say in a recent press release that the Silent Hill 2 remake is in the “final stage of development” and that it is expected to arrive sometime in 2024.
But such public disagreement pre-release is rarely a good omen. It hints at potential creative clashes, communication breakdowns, or differing visions for the final product. And while it doesn’t guarantee disaster, it certainly raises concerns about whether the developer fully controls the narrative surrounding their work.
Fans of Silent Hill, already divided by Bloober Team’s track record and the trailer’s direction, are left in a state of apprehensive anticipation. Some remain cautiously optimistic, trusting the developer’s dedication to a faithful remake. Others fear the trailer’s action focus compromises the core horror experience, echoing concerns about Bloober Team’s prior titles.
Only time will tell if this public spat translates into a troubled launch.
