PlayStation 5 has outsold Xbox Series X/S by nearly 2 to 1, according to data shared by Take-Two during an investor presentation alongside its quarterly financial results.
Take-Two said that 77 million current-gen consoles had been sold as of December 31, 2023. And of those 77 million consoles, over 50 million of them are PlayStation 5’s, according to data shared by Sony as of December 8, 2023. Taking into account further sales in December 2023, if Take Two’s data is accurate, that means the PlayStation 5 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by nearly 2 to 1.
The news comes as a blow to Microsoft, which has been struggling to keep up with Sony and Nintendo in the console market.
Microsoft has not confirmed exact sales numbers for Xbox Series X/S, but openly admitted to “los[ing] the console wars” last year.
Microsoft’s third-place position between Sony and Nintendo had led some to speculate that Microsoft may release more games on rival platforms, such as PlayStation. Phil Spencer, head of gaming at Microsoft, will be sharing more information about the future of Xbox next week.
“We’re listening and we hear you,” Phil Spencer wrote on X. “We’ve been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned.”
