What You Need to Know

Get ready to dust off your fedoras and polish your bullwhips, Indiana Jones fans!

Mark your calendars for sometime in 2024, because Indy is cracking the whip back into the world of video games. While originally slated for a late 2022 debut, the latest escapade encountered pandemic-related obstacles. But fear not! The development team at Bethesda and MachineGames is hard at work, crafting an experience worthy of the Indiana Jones legacy.

On January 18, 2024, the veil of secrecy lifts (slightly) as Bethesda and MachineGames plan to reveal more about the game at Xbox’s next Developer_Direct, potentially even offering a glimpse of gameplay footage and (hopefully) a 2024 release date.

Rumors abound about the game’s narrative, with some speculating it might delve into Indy’s younger years, offering a fresh perspective on his legendary exploits. Hints from the earlier teaser trailer suggest we might be exploring Roman artifacts and possibly even confronting the infamous Mussolini, hinting at an intriguing historical backdrop for Indy’s next perilous quest.

With MachineGames’ expertise in first-person shooter titles like Wolfenstein, speculation leans towards a blend of pulse-pounding exploration, mind-bending puzzles, and action-oriented combat.

Picture yourself navigating forgotten tombs while deciphering ancient riddles, all punctuated by thrilling shootouts and hair-raising escapes – and of course, Indy wouldn’t be complete without his trusty whip and adventurer’s toolkit coming into play.

Todd Howard, director at Bethesda, has teased the team’s desire to create a “unique adventure,” and sources close to the development suggest the game is roughly halfway through its journey.

However, there’s a cloud of disappointment for PlayStation and Nintendo fans, as the game’s exclusivity deal with Microsoft following their acquisition of Bethesda confirms it as an Xbox and PC title. This platform exclusivity has renewed heated debate within the gaming community, but one thing’s for certain: the excitement for The Man in the Hat’s return to the gaming world remains undimmed.

Indy’s journey in video games began in 1985 with the side-scrolling arcade romp of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, immersing players in the film’s perilous temple chase.

But 1992 truly changed the landscape with the double whammy of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

The action-packed game on PC and Amiga saw Indy exploring a lost Atlantean city, while the point-and-click adventure game on the same platforms offered a brain-bending puzzle odyssey through mythical locations. This one-two punch cemented Atlantis as a beloved corner of the Indy universe and the graphic adventure as a genre hallmark.

Fast forward to 2008, and Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings on Wii, PS2, and other platforms brought the fedora-wearing hero to our living rooms. This globe-trotting adventure blended combat and platforming as Indy sought a powerful artifact, proving the franchise could still thrill the next generation.

And now, in 2024, a new chapter unfolds with the untitled Indiana Jones game from MachineGames and Bethesda. If they can pull it off, we might have an Xbox version of Uncharted on our hands.

What are your hopes and speculations for the new Indiana Jones game?
