What You Need to Know

As reported by Variety, the spellbinding success of Hogwarts Legacy continues, with the immersive open-world RPG claiming the title of 2023’s best-selling game by a landslide.

As of December 31st, a staggering 22 million copies have flown off physical and virtual shelves, with no signs of the magic fading. What’s more, approximately 2 million of those units were sold during the December holiday season.

Critics and fans alike were captivated by Hogwarts Legacy’s faithful recreation of J.K. Rowling’s iconic wizarding world. The game is sitting at 85% critics recommended on the MetaMeter, and in our summary of critics consensus for the game, we wrote: “Hogwarts Legacy is filled to the brim with content, featuring a phenomenal open world with satisfying combat and rewarding puzzles.” The intricate spellcasting system, captivating quests, and meticulous attention to detail in Hogwarts Castle kept players enthralled for hours on end.

But while the game delivered a complete and satisfying experience, one element notably absent sent whispers through the wizarding community: Quidditch.

The beloved sport’s omission left a bittersweet tinge for many players, prompting questions about whether Quidditch might get its own standalone title.

Warner Bros. Games, the publisher behind Hogwarts Legacy, has remained relatively tight-lipped on the matter, but has said that the Quidditch game is currently being beta-tested. “We don’t have any particular announcements on exactly how and when [the Quidditch game] is going to come to the market, but we are working to get it designed in a way just to delight fans,” Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president David Haddad said.

With Hogwarts Legacy’s phenomenal success, it’s hard to imagine Quidditch staying grounded for long.

Hints of further adventures in the wizarding world have already been dropped, and a dedicated Quidditch game could be the perfect broomstick-mounted sequel. Imagine soaring through the skies as your chosen Hogwarts House hopeful, mastering broom control, strategizing plays, and snatching the Golden Snitch in a fast-paced, action-packed Quidditch Cup challenge. Such a game wouldn’t just be a dream come true for Potterheads; it could also tap into the dedicated Quidditch franchise fanbase and attract new players seeking a taste of the magical pitch.

While Warner Bros. Games may be keeping their Quidditch plans largely under wraps for now, one thing is certain: Hogwarts Legacy has reignited the embers of fandom, and the demand for a Quidditch game is as real as a Bludger to the face.

Whether it takes flight in 2025 or beyond, one thing’s for sure: it’ll be a magical experience for players worldwide.
