What You Need to Know

Get ready to revisit some iconic point-and-click adventures. Beloved titles Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle have recently been rated for PlayStation 5 in Taiwan, hinting at a potential revival for these cult classics on Sony’s next-gen console.

Remasters for these titles were released in 2015, 2016, and 2017 respectively, originally for the PS4, Vita and PC before making their way to Xbox the year after Microsoft acquired their developer, Double Fine, in October 2020. The PS5 rating indicates they have been updated further for next-gen consoles.

Developed by the legendary Double Fine Productions and originally released in the mid-90s, these titles hold a special place in the hearts of many adventure game fans. Grim Fandango, a darkly comedic noir set in the Land of the Dead, is widely considered a masterpiece, while Day of the Tentacle’s wacky time travel antics and Full Throttle’s biker gang story have garnered their own dedicated followings.

The possibility of these titles gracing the PS5 is exciting for several reasons. The console’s powerful hardware could potentially enhance the visuals and performance of the remasters, while DualSense controller integration could offer innovative gameplay possibilities. Additionally, a new generation of players could be introduced to these timeless classics, ensuring their legacy continues.

While official confirmation from Double Fine or Microsoft is still pending, the rating has ignited excitement among fans. Expect these updated titles to release on other platforms in addition to the PlayStation 5, and given their developer is a first-party studio from Microsoft, expect all three to release Day One on Game Pass (the previous versions are already there). So dust off your trenchcoat, prepare to face a purple tentacle, and get ready to throttle down memory lane – these classic adventures might just be making a comeback.
