The Last of Us Remastered is a spruced-up edition of one of the most well-crafted action adventure games of the last console generation.
In 2013, I called The Last of Us on PlayStation 3 a masterpiece. The same holds true of its PlayStation 4 “Remastered” sibling. You can’t go wrong with either version, but with Remastered you’ll get a better framerate that smooths out gunplay, a prettier, sharper look, and a bunch of DLC content rolled into the package from the get-go (not to mention a whole fresh set of Trophies to earn again, if you have a whole lot of time on your hands). Whether you’ve already experienced it on PlayStation 3 or have no idea what you’re missing, The Last of Us: Remastered is worth your time and attention. PlayStation 3’s best game just became PlayStation 4’s, too.
The Last of Us is truly the game of a generation, and the Remastered edition brings the harrowing adventure to a whole new generation with expert style.

Attack of the Fanboy | Dean James | 5 / 5 stars | 08-03-2014 | The Last of Us Remastered is as brilliant as ever and is a must-buy for any PS4 owner. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Wayne Santos | 9 / 10 | 08-01-2014 | If you’re a former Wii or Xbox 360 owner that missed out on this title last year, it is, absolutely, an essential purchase. | Read review |
Cheat Code Central | Angelo D’Argenio | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-29-2014 | Simply put, The Last of Us: Remastered is just better than the PS3 version. If you are lucky enough to be experiencing The Last of Us for the first time, then you are in for an amazing treat. If you have already purchased the original game, then still consider picking this up. Heck, trade in your PS3 version if you can. This is by far the definitive version of the game, and if you can get the price reduced even a little bit it’s likely worth your money. | Read review |
COGconnected | Doug Mercer | 100 / 100 | 08-01-2014 | Even though Sony is trying to wrangle every dollar possible out of us gamers, The Last of Us Remastered is a must buy for long time fans as well as new players looking for a great game for their PS4. I can’t recommend this enough. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Geoffrey Tim | 8.4 / 10 | 08-01-2014 | It’s quite simple really. One of the games on the PlayStation is now one of the best games on the PlayStation 4. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Athanasios | 9 / 10 | 07-15-2020 | A post-apocalyptic road trip that offers a fantastic, riveting experience, where destruction and beauty, and hope and despair, get entwined in a way that’s nothing short of genius, The Last of Us is so good that its somewhat repetitive, and occasionally dull gameplay isn’t enough to rob it of its rightful place amongst the video game greats. Therefore, if looking for an unforgettable action-adventure, with strong cinematic sensibilities, and a heavy emphasis in adult, character-driven storytelling, look no further than Naughty Dog’s classic, especially now that the remastered version has made the original even more stunning. | Read review |
DarkZero | Dominic Sheard | 10 / 10 | 08-04-2014 | Either way, no matter which version of The Last of Us you play, it still remains one of the best exclusive titles for Sony and one of – if not THE – greatest games of the last generation. | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 10 / 10 | 08-06-2014 | The Uncharted series was always the staple for Naughty Dog in that exact role. However, The Last of Us has certainly defended it’s right to be the one the best Playstation title’s of all time. With beautiful graphics, a wonderfully written story, that’s almost too good to be a video game, and music that just sets the tone for an almost death-row lead life, you really can appreciate why this title scored over 20 Game of the Year awards. | Read review |
Digital Chumps | Steven McGehee | 9.4 / 10 | 07-31-2014 | The Last of Us finds a very appropriate home on the PS4. | Read review |
Digital Spy | Liam Martin | 5 / 5 stars | 07-28-2014 | It features a superb plot, contains at least one piece of essential DLC and looks absolutely stunning, making it an essential purchase for newcomers and one to consider for fans of the original. | Read review |
Digital Trends | Adam Rosenberg | 4 / 5 stars | 07-28-2014 | The Last of Us Remastered is the same great game it was in 2013, but Naughty Dog’s upgrade could have used more time to bake. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Nick H. | 5 / 5 stars | 07-29-2014 | When I finished The Last of Us Remastered, I was reminded of the myriad feelings I had at the conclusion of the game nearly a year ago. Just like then, I put down the controller while leaning back in my seat while giving thought to the story, the characters and how I felt about what had happened. In the end I came to the same conclusion now that I did back then: I had fun with the game itself, but it was the narrative that will no doubt be what sticks with me for some time. | Read review |
Echo Boomer | David Fialho | Recommended | 05-11-2020 | The Last of Us stands the test of time showing us how incredible and emotional its journey really is. | Read review |
EGM | Mollie L Patterson | 9.5 / 10 | 08-06-2014 | While The Last of Us was one of the PS3’s most impressive, engrossing releases, The Last of Us: Remastered feels like the version of Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic story of survival that the developer always intended us to play. Its story and characters are just as strong as they were before, but they’re now reinforced by far more amazing visuals, consistent framerate, and a nice selection of new bonus features and DLC inclusions. | Read review |
Everyeye.it | Francesco Fossetti | 10 / 10 | 07-28-2014 | 1080p and 60fps (with rare drops). Better textures and shadows. But in the end, the most exciting part of this masterpiece is still the plot, the emotions and the tears. And one year after its original release, everything is still there to surprise you. | Read review |
Game Informer | Tim Turi | 10 / 10 | 07-28-2014 | The punishing world dares you to press on, and the story is an emotional punch to the gut. In short, this is one of the best video games ever made | Read review |
Game Revolution | Daniel Bischoff | 5 / 5 stars | 07-31-2014 | People love scores, the score here isn’t changing. | Read review |
Gameblog | Rami Bououd | 10 / 10 | 11-08-2016 | If The Last of Us Remastered does not upset the order established by the original version, it is clear that the magic still works. The technical additions enhance an already very tough and optimized gaming experience. | Read review |
GameCrate | Robert Workman | 9.8 / 10 | 07-31-2014 | Easily one of the best releases last year, The Last of Us Remastered has a good chance of winning even more Game of the Year honors with this exceptional improvement. The visuals, sound, gameplay and extras all come together to make this a worthwhile package. Even if you’ve seen everything it has to offer, you should experience it again. | Read review |
Gameplanet | Matt Maguire | 9.5 / 10 | 07-28-2014 | The Last of Us Remastered is a better-looking, better performing version of an already incredible game. As such, those who haven’t played the original version should buy immediately, and those that have probably should as well. | Read review |
GameSkinny | t4mas89 | 10 / 10 | 04-02-2016 | For me The Last of Us: Remastered is the best action-adventure survival game released so far | Read review |

GamesRadar+ | David Houghton | 5 / 5 stars | 07-28-2014 | The Last of Us remains a must-play, genre-defining action survival game, and the Remastered version brings with it plentiful tweaks and additional content that make it well worth the asking price. | Read review |
GameZone | Matt Liebl | 9 / 10 | 08-02-2014 | If you weren’t able to play The Last of Us on PS3, then definitely check out the Remastered version on PS4. It’s honestly a must-play for any PlayStation owner. If you did play it on PS3 already and want to experience it again, well, have at it. The Remastered version only improves upon what you already loved. And adds to it as well with all of the previously released DLC already included on it. | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Cyril Lachel | 8.5 / 10 | 08-13-2014 | The Last of Us has one of the best stories in recent memory. Too bad the rest of the gameplay isn’t as well done. With far too many action segments and repetitive puzzles, this survival action game gets bogged down by filler. Thankfully the strong last act and great chemistry between leads makes this a must-play, warts and all. | Read review |
GamingTrend | David Roberts | 95 / 100 | 08-04-2014 | The Last of Us is truly the game of a generation, and the Remastered edition brings the harrowing adventure to a whole new generation with expert style. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Adam Cook | 10 / 10 | 08-01-2014 | The best game on PlayStation 3 is now the best game on PlayStation 4. Despite some decent titles on Sony’s new machine, you can’t deny the quality of Naughty Dog’s masterpiece. Even the staunchest of advocates that want original experiences on their new console will struggle to find much wrong with The Last of Us. Truly magical. | Read review |
GRYOnline.pl | Kacper Pitala | 9 / 10 | 07-29-2014 | The Last of Us for the PS4 is a perfect game for all people who haven’t had the opportunity to get acquainted with it before. It’s probably the best game available for this piece of hardware | Read review |

IGN Italy | Mattia Ravanelli | 9 / 10 | 07-28-2014 | Naughty Dog’s masterpiece is a must have for every PS4-owner that missed the game one year ago. But if you already met Joel and Ellie on PS3, think twice. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Peter Bourke | 5 / 5 stars | 08-03-2014 | The Last of Us Remastered Edition deserves another perfect score on the PlayStation 4 thanks to the collected DLC and improved graphics that I thought could not be possible due to how amazing it looked on the PS3. Nonetheless for fans and newcomers, they will enjoy the story of Joel and Ellie as they explore this decimated world and get lost in the untold chapter of Ellie plus the multiplayer fun of Abandoned Territories with its rich textures, colours and silky smooth graphics. Gaming doesn’t get any better than this! | Read review |
JVL | Malcolm89 | 9.5 / 10 | 07-28-2014 | 17 for those who have played it on PS3. Even if at first glance, the graphic gap may appear derisory on The Last Of Us Remastered, the technical power made available to the game by the PS4 allows it to fully express its potential and captivate once again players who have already traveled the adventure on PS3. | Read review |
Kotaku | Kirk Hamilton | Recommended | 07-29-2014 | Within the zombie clichés lies a lovely, moving story about a relationship between two desperate people. | Read review |
LevelUp | Jorge Arellano | 10 / 10 | 07-30-2014 | ‎In the end, a ploy or not to patch a sparse line of software, ‎‎The Last of Us: Remastered‎‎ is a new version of one of the best titles of the previous generation and we must judge it by that and not by whether some players already finished it on another console. In this regard, I remember that as I walked through their desolation I saw here and there American flags flying in a carefree relent: there will be people, like me, who will buy this magnificent game a second time; after all, it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than capitalism, I thought.‎ | Read review |
Merlin’in Kazanı | Emin Çıtak | 94 / 100 | 07-28-2014 | The Last of Us: Remastered is a GOTY Edition. But, if you are expecting ‘next-gen’ graphics, you may be disappointed. After all, you can play The Last of Us with 1080p and 60FPS. It’s the most important part of Remastered Edition. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | David Jenkins | 9 / 10 | 07-27-2014 | Still a stunning achievement in both storytelling and third person adventure, and although this is the definitive version the differences are still minor. | Read review |
Niche Gamer | Jamie Sharp | 9 / 10 | 06-01-2020 | If you like games, then The Last Of Us Remastered is for you. It doesn’t necessarily fit into any one genre, but it is a must play for anyone who has a PlayStation 4. | Read review |
NZGamer | Angus Deacon | 9.8 / 10 | 07-30-2014 | What was one of the best games for the PlayStation 3 is now one of the best games you can buy for the PlayStation 4. You owe it to yourself to experience this masterpiece first hand. | Read review |
PCMag | Jeffrey L. Wilson | 4.5 / 5 stars | 10-22-2013 | The Last of Us is a horror masterpiece that proves that the aging PlayStation 3 still has the potential to produce jaw-dropping AAA games. | Read review |
PlayStation LifeStyle | Dyani Wood | 10 / 10 | 07-29-2014 | The bottom line is, I thought this game was very much worthwhile even after being doubtful before I played it. Speaking to those who have already played the PS3 version, if you really loved it back then, I would suggest getting this version for PS4 too. It has a lot of extras and it looks really beautiful with the 1080p, higher frame rate, and updated graphics and character models. To those who are interested in diving into The Last of Us for the first time, what are you waiting for?!? The Last of Us Remastered is just a perfect game made even more perfect. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Timothy Nunes | 9.5 / 10 | 07-31-2014 | Naughty Dog gives PlayStation gamers a second, definitive chance to experience one of the greatest video game stories. The Last of Us Remastered’s additional content, visual enhancements, and improved performance leave very little standing in the way of a perfect encore. | Read review |
Push Square | Sammy Barker | 10 / 10 | 08-01-2014 | The Last of Us Remastered was unlikely to be anything less than sublime, and that’s the expected outcome that we’ve arrived at here. While its PS3 precursor prevents it from possessing the level of next-gen gloss that its native PS4 contemporaries contain, this is still a mighty fine looking title, and its framerate and resolution improvements only serve to solidify that. Of course, the onboard add-on packs and smattering of superfluous extras ensure that this is the definitive edition of an already outstanding affair – but, unsurprisingly, it’s the touching tale at the heart of the package that once again sets it apart from its peers. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Matúš Å trba | 9 / 10 | 08-06-2014 | In every way, it’s an improvement on the original game, where things like commentary and photo mode for taking pictures are just the icing on the torch. | Read review |
Slant Magazine | Justin Clark | 4 / 5 stars | 08-17-2014 | A next-gen playthrough reveals a game that doesn’t break new ground, but very much tries to reach perfection with the tools Naughty Dog and the industry as a whole, really, are all very well aware of. | Read review |
Softpedia | Andrei Dobra | 9.5 / 10 | 08-21-2014 | The Last of Us Remastered is definitely worth your money on the PS4, particularly if you haven’t experienced it on the PS3. Don’t, however, expect that big of a difference from the PS3 edition. Sure, the better textures and the 60fps framerate offer drastic improvements, but there are still downsides, from the aliasing to the AI problems. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Unknown | 9 / 10 | 07-29-2014 | The Last of Us is and remains a masterpiece, and our rating for that title remains unchanged. This does not also apply to this Remastered edition, not so much for the quality of the work done, as for the lack of usefulness of the operation. The graphic improvements are very pleasant, but not so marked as to force the purchase of those who have already tasted the work of Naughty Dog on PS3, and content-basedly there are no really significant extras outside of the DLC. | Read review |
Telegraph | Tom Hoggins | 5 / 5 stars | 08-15-2014 | The Last of Us is every inch the modern classic, and this remastering seems entirely appropriate, even so soon after its initial release. As we enter a new generation, it’s apt to celebrate the best of what games can do. It might not be essential for those who have already made the journey, but for everyone else, The Last of Us is vital. | Read review |

The Digital Fix | Liam Croft | 10 / 10 | 08-07-2014 | The Last Of Us Remastered absolutely deserves a place in your PlayStation 4 collection, despite whether you’ve played it before or not. The improvements this remaster brings only helps to show you how much of an incredible, beautiful, emotional and downright amazing game this is. | Read review |
The Escapist | Jim Sterling | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-27-2014 | With its improved detail, better draw distance, and slick 60fps presentation, The Last of Us Remastered is a beautiful update to a beautiful game. It is, however, a rerelease of a game that isn’t very old to begin with, and that bears taking into account. | Read review |
Toronto Sun | Steve Tilley | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-30-2014 | It’s tough to recommend for PS3 players who have already played the game, as the $55 price is a bit steep for some enhanced visuals and a bit of added content. But PlayStation 4 owners who haven’t yet experienced The Last of Us absolutely owe it to themselves to pick up this modern classic, and take a journey with Joel and Ellie across the heartbreakingly beautiful ruins of our world. | Read review |
TrustedReviews | Stuart Andrews | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-30-2014 | The visual upgrades are more modest than you might expect, but the extra definition and detail and the enhanced effects make The Last of Us even more stunning and richly cinematic, while the steady frame rate improves the gameplay. There’s probably not enough of a difference to justify buying the same game twice, but if you have a PS4 and haven’t played The Last of Us, then you can consider this edition a must-buy. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Zhiqing Wan | 4 / 5 stars | 07-29-2014 | Overall, The Last of Us Remastered is a solid title for the growing PS4 library and it’s perfect for anyone who gave the game a miss last year to jump in. As for players who have already experienced the game on the PS3, I’d say this is a great opportunity to take another dive into the game’s universe, especially if you loved it the first time you played it. | Read review |
USgamer | Jeremy Parish | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-27-2014 | There’s not really enough distance between the PS3 version of The Last of Us and this new Remaster to make it worth double-dipping, unless you’re simply that fixated on counting lines of resolution. If you missed out the first time around, though, you really shouldn’t let it slip past again. | Read review |
VideoGamer | VideoGamer.com Staff | 10 / 10 | 07-27-2014 | The best version of one of the last generation’s best games. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Paul Villanueva | 5 / 5 stars | 07-31-2014 | A sharper visual package, notable extras, smoother online play, and some behind-the-scenes goodies make The Last of Us: Remastered a must-buy. | Read review |
Zoomg | دانیال نوروزی | 10 / 10 | 01-11-2015 | This extraordinary experience, with a high-quality entry into the eighth generation, easily doubled the same pleasure as before. In addition to the original game, all previously released content has now been collected on a disc for PlayStation 4 audiences. | Read review |
ZTGD | Dave Payerle | 9 / 10 | 08-18-2014 | Players who missed this on the PS3 will find a lot to like here, but for those who have already completed it I doubt the graphical upgrade is worth another play through. | Read review |
