Impressive efforts with a few noticeable problems holding them back. Won’t astound everyone, but is worth your time and cash.
Tchia is a beautiful piece of art that is equal parts enriching and enjoyable. The heartfelt story is reinforced by a lovely tribute to the unique culture of New Caledonia. Outside of some standard open-world woes, Tchia is an endlessly charming game with an endearing protagonist at its heart.
Tchia is not an experience for everyone, but it is perfect for those who want to take a break from the frenzy and incessant fighting.

Areajugones | Alfonso Cánovas | 8 / 10 | 04-05-2023 | The experience proposed by Tchía is very interesting and fun, a small open world full of possibilities that drinks directly from the Zelda saga and tells a story that will fall in love | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Mick Abrahamson | 8 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia was a grand adventure that I couldn’t put down. Exploring these islands renewed my love of deep and well-realized open-world exploration games, all thanks to Soul-Jumping. Exploring the numerous land, sky, and sea creatures made what could be a long hike a joyous adventure. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Charlie Kelly | 7 / 10 | 03-19-2023 | Tchia provides a vibrant and enjoyable world to explore. Soul jumping into an animal or object to move about is an incredible mechanic that allows for creativity, experimentation, and improvisation. Sailing among the waves is mesmerising in colour and imagery, as is the thick jungle and wildlife that also awaits. What’s more refreshing is the open-world formula the game offers that doesn’t daunt you, only rewarding you for however much you choose to engage with it. Tchia may have the occasional bug on PC and a rocky and overly accelerated last quarter of a story, but remaining throughout is a narrative and world with heart, love, and a feeling of home. For that alone, this is a game well worth taking to the high seas for. | Read review |
COGconnected | Mark Steighner | 82 / 100 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia’s story and characters might be slanted to younger players, but older gamers will enjoy its open-world mechanics and relaxing vibe. Thoroughly rooted in the culture, music, traditions, and geography of New Caledonia, Tchia is an appealing and respectful window into an unfamiliar slice of paradise, translated into a game that’s full of charm. | Read review |

Easy Allies | Daniel Bloodworth | 4 / 5 stars | 03-21-2023 | Allowing players to inhabit a variety of animals and objects, Tchia presents gorgeous landscapes to explore, crafted with a rich love for the culture and environments of the real-world locations that inspired it. | Read review |

Game Informer | Kyle Hilliard | 8.5 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia drips with joyful, explorative fun. The idea of letting players loose in an interactive sandbox is a goal that has been chased by developers since video games began. Few truly give you the freedom to frolic in a virtual playground, and though Tchia is not without its shortcomings, it’s a rare instance where the temptation to just play in the digital world is rewarding at just about every turn. The tone, the music, and Tchia’s abilities all come together to create something that is simply fun, and it all takes place in a setting that demands to be explored. | Read review |
Gameblog | Tiny_Ellie | 7 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a classic open world, that takes great inspiration from other games. If not for its tropical environments, its beautiful artistic direction and its culture, it would have been just another déjà-vu game. Instead, it’s a real invitation to travel despite its numerous technical problems. It’s hard to resist its stunning landscapes, its sweet melodies and its relaxing rhythm. A generous and exotic game that made ambitious things with little meanings. | Read review |
GameGrin | Artura Dawn | 7 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | The most infuriating part about Tchia is that the very few enjoyable moments are incredible, letting you see exactly how great of a title this could have been if it weren’t for its many lacking elements. | Read review |

Gamer Escape | Laura Borrayo | 8 / 10 | 03-24-2023 | It’s a little bittersweet to think about the fact that I am now done with Tchia’s story. It’s been a while since I’ve played such an original game with so much culture. I actually feel compelled to commend it for how much it surprised me. Its storyline was dark but heartwarming, the cast was diverse and colorful (if not a little undeveloped), and the gameplay had me engaged for hours by letting me do something as simple as transforming into a fish. | Read review |
GamesRadar+ | Heather Wald | 4 / 5 stars | 03-20-2023 | Awaceb delivers an inviting open-world that encourages exploration, creativity, and experimentation. The Soul-Jumping mechanic shines above all, providing a unique way to traverse the landscapes and make the most of the tropical playground. Tchia is a welcome getaway with so much to discover. | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Jason Dailey | 8.5 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a gorgeous, endearing open-world adventure filled with the heart and soul of New Caledonian culture. It’s a world you’ll love being in despite the overall experience being stymied from reaching its true potential by tedious combat. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Usaid | 6 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia has some interesting things going for it with its beautiful rendition of New Caledonia and fun traversal mechanics, but poor mission design and cookie-cutter side activities mar down those strengths by a significant margin. | Read review |
GamingTrend | David Burdette | 80 / 100 | 03-20-2023 | While Tchia’s story doesn’t find the steadiest of footing, its world and portrayal of culture are outstanding. The gameplay is also a lot of fun, even with a decent amount of padding to keep you busy in the gorgeous open world. New Caledonia is certainly worth the visit in this digital representation. | Read review |

Hardcore Gamer | Kyle LeClair | 3.5 / 5 stars | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a terrific ode to New Caledonia that’s sadly hampered by a bloated and standard open-world design that tries to do too much. Still, even if the gameplay isn’t wholly original, there’s fun to be had here, with truly impressive sights and sounds that can make the archipelago a delight to explore at times. Just try to maintain some focus as you navigate the numerous distractions and you’ll experience quite the impressive trip. | Read review |
Hey Poor Player | Andrew Thornton | 4 / 5 stars | 03-20-2023 | Looking back on my time with Tchia, there’s no one game-changing element that I can point to and say this is why you need to play it. The animal possession is the closest thing, but even then, what stands out about the mechanic is how solidly it works in so many different ways rather than any one of those ways being amazing. Yet despite this, I think many players will have a fantastic time exploring these islands. With a ton of personality, solid mechanics, and a unique vibe helping to keep the whole experience compelling, players should absolutely check Tchia out. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | Alberto Lloret | 85 / 100 | 07-22-2023 | Few open worlds offer an experience as unique and distinct as Tchia, a game with a personality as overwhelming as its own world or the mechanics it proposes. Even with its flaws and technical aspects that can be improved, it is a game that deserves a chance, as soon as you go to the games in the open world. | Read review |
IGN Italy | Angelo Bianco | 7.9 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Definitely different from other dispersive and soulless open world experiences, Tchia is a tropical adventure that pays homage to the culture and territorial beauties of New Caledonia. However, this scaled-down version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has its shortcomings, including technical stability issues and a not-so-great story longevity. In any case, Tchia remains a fun game that knows how to make players fall in love with the unique culture of the Kanak people. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Estrella Gómez | 7 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a nice open world experience that has enough magic to keep anyone trapped for hours. While its story doesn’t have the necessary rhythm and depth, it’s worth giving its wonderful world a chance. | Read review |
LevelUp | Ulises Contreras | 7.5 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia has a lot of heart and charm. It’s clear that the developers really wanted to honor the culture, traditions, landscapes and music of New Caledonia. Unfortunately, the exploration is repetitive after a few hours, the soul-Jumping mechanic never reaches its true potential and the combat is bland. That’s unfortuntely, as the game tries with love and honesty be a memorable experience. | Read review |
Luis Alamilla | Luis Alamilla | 7 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia was made with a ton of heart and love, that’s easily apparent. As I soared through the skies, spoke to people across the island, and sailed through the sea, I could very much feel the care that was put into every decision made for this game. Getting to explore the island, I felt easily reeled into exploring every nook and cranny, collecting new clothing for Tchia, and discovering collectibles here and there. Tchia is obviously ambitious that’s noted in its highs and lows. Sadly this game can get a bit janky with its performance and optimization. I’ve had some friends also report that it crashed their computer and while I didn’t run into that myself, it’s something I wanted to note. Hopefully, with some time, Tchia can further get optimized because once you get passed the jank, there’s a lot to dig into. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | GameCentral | 7 / 10 | 03-28-2023 | One of the best post-Breath Of The Wild open world adventures, but while the game’s heavily influenced by Zelda it ultimately plumps for amiable exploration over more rugged adventure. | Read review |
MonsterVine | Nick Mangiaracina | 2 / 5 stars | 03-20-2023 | Tchia ended up becoming a frustrating and boring mess of a game. | Read review |
Niche Gamer | Augusto A. | 8 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a beautiful tropical painting given interactive form, and is a fantastic way of getting lost and immersed in a new culture. | Read review |
NoobFeed | Jay Claassen | 70 / 100 | 03-22-2023 | Aside from a few missing mechanics and usual features of this genre such as the lack of fast travel and wildlife to Soul-jump into, Tchia is still a brilliantly designed game with beautiful visuals, rich culture to explore, breathtaking music, and so much more. The atmosphere might seem unnecessarily cheery and light, but that might be the main message the game has to offer. | Read review |
Oyungezer Online | İpek Atam | 7 / 10 | 03-30-2023 | It has its annoying flaws, but if you’re looking for a peaceful and calm game to breathe when you’re overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of gaming and life, give it a shot. | Read review |

PC Invasion | Andrew Farrell | 8 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Lovely and captivating even if it’s a bit lacking in substance overall. But you can fly around a gorgeous open word as a bird and freely play a ukulele, so this one’s a win in my book. | Read review |
PlayStation LifeStyle | Mack Ashworth | 6 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | During the course of Tchia’s tropical adventure, players will experience many great, carefully-implemented ideas. The open world influenced by New Caledonia remains sensitive to its cultural inspirations, the unique soul-jumping mechanic is a joy to use and explore, the boat controls and fully-functional ukulele are overkill in the best kind of way, and the story has both unexpected darkness and humor. Unfortunately, a handful of good ideas can’t save Tchia from running out of steam before the finale and crumbling beneath a wave of performance issues. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Tommy Holloway | 7.5 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Some persistent technical issues that prove frustrating, an uneven campaign, and a formulaic open world can bog down an otherwise wonderful exploration of culture. Nonetheless, Tchia’s unique gameplay elements, euphonious music, and often vibrant world make it worth checking out. | Read review |
Polygon | Nicole Carpenter | Recommended | 03-20-2023 | Tchia could easily have filled the action-adventure mold of so many games before it. It takes even more of a risk by pulling so heavily from The Legend of Zelda. But, despite those influences, it isn’t weighed down by that sameness. Tchia’s transforming power comes from her eye, green where the other is not. It makes sense, then, that it would let us see Tchia’s world, and this genre, in a whole new light. | Read review |
Press Start | Kieron Verbrugge | 8 / 10 | 03-21-2023 | There’s so much about Tchia that feels at odds with what I’m accustomed to considering “good” game design, but it’s also taught me to throw a lot of those ideas out the window. Tchia is a game that’s exactly what it wants to be, and that makes it something that everyone needs to play. It’s refreshing, charming, earnest, honest and – most importantly – a heap of fun. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Paulo Roberto Montanaro | 90 / 100 | 03-20-2023 | With minor technical adjustments to be made, Tchia is a true masterpiece in all its aspects, which together allow us a journey through the rich and still unknown culture of New Caledonia. With solid and light gameplay, captivating graphics, mesmerizing music, and a subtle and delicate narrative, it is a simply delightful game. | Read review |
Push Square | Jade Sayers | 7 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia feels really unlike any experience we’ve ever had with a video game. Full of heart, but occasionally lacking direction, it’s a unique experience showcasing the love the dev team has for New Caledonia. Everything about Tchia evokes a wonderful tropical vibe, full of rich history and culture, from the folklore elements of the storyline to the authentic voice acting in New Caledonia’s native language, Drehu. Unfortunate bugs let it down and stop players experiencing it to its fullest, but a solid, enjoyable, and ultimately beautiful game is at its core. It’s evident that a lot of love has been poured into this really exciting debut from Awaceb, and as a day one PS Plus Extra release, it’s bound to bring a lot of joy to a lot of players. | Read review |

Rock, Paper, Shotgun | Rachel Watts | Recommended | 03-21-2023 | Tchia’s gorgeous archipelago is bursting with character and exploration potential. Saving Content | Harry Harrison | 3 / 5 stars | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a huge achievement from a tiny studio that clearly had a lot of fantastic ideas they wanted to blend together into an amazing game. Ultimately though, the mark was just missed by not letting each part really sing, instead they each fell into the backing track with no lead ukulele player. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Juraj Malíček | 7 / 10 | 04-12-2023 | Tchia certainly wanted to be a bigger, more distinctive game than it is, I have no doubt that it was created with noble motives, but in the end it unfortunately feels like a half-baked advertising game promoting New Caledonia through loving images and excellent music, but with no real sense of enrichment in it. | Read review |
Shacknews | Donovan Erskine | 9 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia is a beautiful piece of art that is equal parts enriching and enjoyable. TechRaptor | Keenan McCall | 8.5 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Though it has its flaws, Tchia is one of the best open world games I’ve played in a long time. The variety of things to do in its gorgeous world will keep most any player occupied for the duration of their playthrough, and will almost certainly leave them glad they gave the title a chance. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Emanuele Feronato | 8 / 10 | 03-27-2023 | Tchia is an open world with many scenic settings to discover and just as many activities in which to engage while interacting with the Caledonian culture. The Soul Jump is one of the best features of the game, which, however, despite a well-told story risks to slip into boredom due to an almost complete absence of combat. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Nic Bunce | 5 / 10 | 03-21-2023 | Tchia is clearly a labour of love as Awaceb try to bring their culture to the rest of the world and show off what it has to offer. I absolutely love that tone and feel, but the way Tchia is packaged and paced means that it is ultimately feels like less than the sum of its parts. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Juniper Finch | 5 / 5 stars | 03-20-2023 | Novice gamers and those who prefer story-centric games will love the no-fail nature of Tchia, and experienced gamers will get a kick out of manipulating the game environment in out-of-the-box ways with Tchia’s Soul Jumping abilities. | Read review |
VGChartz | Lee Mehr | 6 / 10 | 04-28-2023 | Awaceb’s open world sandbox and serene vistas capture the splendor of a tropical vacation, but certain design tropes eventually make progress feel like a chore. | Read review |
Video Chums | Mary Billington | 8.4 / 10 | 03-30-2023 | Tchia is a highly enjoyable and varied coming-of-age adventure game with a ton to see and do. The possession mechanic is a ton of fun, the sights and sounds are undeniably attractive, and it has a good dose of dark humour to top it all off. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Heidi Hawes | 6.5 / 10 | 04-09-2023 | It’s a casual experience, with some fantastic exploration, diverse challenges and tasks, a rich setting, and a surprisingly deep story. The entire game has been lovingly crafted and steeped in lore from New Caledonia. The only thing keeping Tchia out of the realm of greatness are the amount of bugs affecting it, at least on the PC version. With that being said, I wholeheartedly recommend playing it, as long as you either play it on a console, or wait until they’ve patched up the bugs on the PC version. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Mark Isaacson | 9 / 10 | 03-21-2023 | Tchia’s ambitious ideas and brightly textured open world come together in harmony. Despite an air of familiarity, there’s simply nothing else like Tchia, and I have no doubt it will be high on my game of the year list. | Read review |
Worth Playing | Chris “Atom” DeAngelus | 8 / 10 | 03-20-2023 | Tchia might be a game-long love letter, but it’s a real love letter. It’s a fun little exploration game, and the BotW-inspired movement mechanics make it a delight to move around the world. It shines most when it is an outpouring of love for New Caledonia’s culture and environment. It’s rare that I’ve played a game that makes me want to visit somewhere more, and it’s hard to pay Tchia higher praise than that. | Read review |
