A disappointing sequel that suffers from performance issues, a host of bugs, and an unfocused narrative.
Critic Reviews for State of Decay 2
Reviews
Dan Stapleton (IGN)
7.5/10
“Combat is satisfyingly brutal and the special zombies inspire some real fear of permanent death, even though the Blood Plague turns out to be more of a sniffle. But the bugs are just as persistent as the zombies, and after a dozen or so hours the repetition of both eventually take their toll, making the appeal of replaying feel more limited than I’d expected for a sandbox RPG.”
Edwin Evans-Thirlwell (Eurogamer)
Not Recommended
“Technically shambolic, obsessed with hoarding, and a waste of a once-promising society simulation.”
William Schwartz (Attack of the Fanboy)
3.5/5 stars
“If you can put up with a game that isn’t quite state of the industry when it comes to visual fidelity and performance, there’s a fun zombie survival game underneath it all.”

3DNews | Денис Щенников | 7 / 10 | 05-19-2018 | State of Decay 2 is pretty much the same as the first game from five years ago, with some fixes and tweaks here and there. It is still an interesting blend of zombie survival action and social management simulator. But after five years we expected something more. | Read review |

Areajugones | Alfonso Cánovas | 6.5 / 10 | 05-25-2018 | State of Decay 2 aims to be better than its predecessor, and it is. However, characters´ modeling, bugs and poor optimization on PC are too much for this game. It is still an entertaining game, but its clearly unfinished. | Read review |
Ars Technica | Steven Strom | Not Recommended | 05-22-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a smart, messy idea without much of a game to go with it… again. Try it if you don’t mind bugs or repetition too much. | Read review |
Atomix | Rodrigo Martínez | 70 / 100 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a nice game and it looks good, but it has a considerable amount of errors that take away much of its brightness. It is nice that the events that happen within your game are a consequence of the actions of each player, giving that feeling that each of their actions is unrepeatable. Spending most of the game looking for resources in coolers, kitchens, farms and other places, is annoying and takes away much of the fun that can be the game becoming a slow and repetitive activity. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | William Schwartz | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | If you can put up with a game that isn’t quite state of the industry when it comes to visual fidelity and performance, there’s a fun zombie survival game underneath it all. | Read review |
AusGamers | Kosta Andreadis | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | Gruesome and fun zombie-apocalypse survival, but also bug-ridden and poorly optimised. | Read review |
Bazimag | Mohammad Maraghi | 6.4 / 10 | 08-01-2018 | State of Decay 2 is an apocalyptic game that also acts as a grave for some genuine ideas. Theoretically, developers had lots of ideas and plans, but they could not bring about the success in them and due to this, the output product is tainted with lots of problems. We hope that they articulate their plans and ideas more once they decide to move on to State of Decay 3. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Rashaad Johnson | 8 / 10 | 06-05-2018 | I’m addicted to this game, especially playing it with friends. Playing solo gives you that constant on edge feeling, but when you’re playing with friends it can lessen that – unless your friends are just as on edge as you are. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Lukas Kopf | 8 / 10 | 05-16-2018 | After extensive testing, we awarded State of Decay 2 due to the low price of 29.99 € and what’s delivered within the game 8 out of a possible 10 points. Very positively is the finally added co-op and the loot system. The graphics are rather negative, which in favor of the performance is well below what we saw in the E3 trailer last year. In summary, State of Decay 2 delivers a thrilling adventure with a high replay ability value and its complex systems, which can be a lot of fun in a co-op. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Jed Whitaker | Not Recommended | 05-17-2018 | If you loved the original State of Decay thankfully you can still play it, because currently, this sequel is too rough around the edges to recommend. | Read review |
Chalgyr’s Game Room | Robert Risdon | 8.8 / 10 | 06-28-2018 | State of Decay 2 excels as survival sim with zombies strewn about a decaying world and really does provide near endless hours of grinding zombies down, hunting and scavenging for more resource, destroying Plaguehearts in hopes of finding a cure, and managing communities. In more ways than one, State of Decay 2 is the pinnacle of zombie survival, successfully melding numerous genres into a dismal world nigh devoid of hope. Amidst the overwhelming tide of darkness lies a small ray of hope within your community. | Read review |
Cheat Code Central | Sean Engemann | 3.8 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is full of improvements and additions over its predecessor, yet strays little from the original blueprint. If you enjoyed the first game, then you will certainly lose plenty of hours in the sequel, scouring the undead ridden lands for supplies to keep your community alive and thriving. However, if you were hoping for groundbreaking changes to the horror survival formula and pristine technical accomplishments, you will be disappointed. Nevertheless, for a bargain retail price, and as a launch title for subscribers of the Xbox Game Pass, it’s definitely worth of a look while keeping some change in your pocket. | Read review |
COGconnected | Paul Sullivan | 40 / 100 | 05-17-2018 | Although there’s a very competent core loop and entertaining resource management sim somewhere within State of Decay 2, it’s really, really, broken. Unacceptably so. It frustrated me mightily to see a flash of a game I wanted to play, only to be immediately reminded that it’s not ready for release. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Geoffrey Tim | 6.5 / 10 | 05-16-2018 | It’s quite simple. If you loved the first game, you’ll appreciate the changes, like a more structured take on base building and community management. There are fantastic systems, hampered by repetitive and shallow gameplay that ultimately feels pointless. State of Decay 2’s scale and lower price don’t quite make up for its lack of polish. | Read review |
Daily Dot | Joseph Knoop | 3 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | For a world that seems to so enthusiastically encourage players to always stay on their toes, it’s supremely frustrating to see a game so often bungle it for you. | Read review |
Destructoid | Raymond Porreca | 8 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 comes together as a game that feels designed for players who like to make checklists and chip away at long-term tasks. That notion might sound contradictory to existence in a zombie apocalypse, where death comes fast and often, but engaging with the game from this perspective makes its rough edges seem more like minor smudges. State of Decay 2’s unique approach to survival and management might not appeal to everyone, but it certainly feels like an instant cult classic. | Read review |
Digiato | Hossein Tavakoli | 67 / 100 | 07-25-2018 | Undead Labs has broken a wing out of two necessary to fly and this has caused the IP’s downfall. State of Decay now is a game like Sea of Thieves and Recore, or to be exact another disappointing exclusive from Microsoft. | Read review |
DualShockers | Ben Bayliss | 7 / 10 | 05-26-2018 | This post contains affiliate links where DualShockers gets a small commission on sales. Any and all support helps keep DualShockers as a standalone, independent platform for less-mainstream opinions and news coverage. | Read review |
Easy Allies | Ben Moore | 3 / 5 stars | 05-26-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a game full of promise blanketed by bugs and an undercooked structure. | Read review |
Echo Boomer | David Fialho | Not Recommended | 05-16-2018 | It could be another survival zombie game, but the sequel for the 2013’s game, remixes known mechanics and core concepts in interesting ways, with a social component that will consume a lot fun of hours when played with friends. | Read review |
EGM | Mollie L Patterson | 7.5 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 builds upon Undead Labs’ original cult classic about surviving a zombie apocalypse, and in many ways, it’s bigger and better than its predecessor. In other ways, however, it’s too similar to said predecessor, resulting in an experience that often feels like it could have been deeper or more ambitious. | Read review |
Eurogamer | Edwin Evans-Thirlwell | Not Recommended | 05-17-2018 | Technically shambolic, obsessed with hoarding, and a waste of a once-promising society simulation. | Read review |
Everyeye.it | Francesco Fossetti | 8.2 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 continues in the footsteps of its predecessor, broadening and smoothing out a decidedly winning formula. Although some of the features of the title of Undead Labs have made school (coming to “infect” even unsuspected productions like This War of Mine), the title remains a unique product of its kind. An open world structure and third-person action gameplay blend with role-playing and management elements, creating an intelligent and effective mixture. The real strength of the product, however, lies elsewhere: in the ability to generate an emotional bond between the player and the characters of his community, each committed to surviving the horror by remaining attached to their ideals, their passions, their personality. | Read review |
Game Debate | Jon Sutton | 5.5 / 10 | 06-02-2018 | Ultimately, State of Decay 2 has proven a disappointment. Undead Labs laid the groundwork with the original, but it’s failed to build upon this to any noticeable degree. It’s a much prettier, just as buggy, State of Decay 1.5. To some, just having more may be enough, but it would’ve been nice to see them push the boat out just a little bit more. Perhaps they should’ve done that MMO zombie survival game after all… | Read review |
Game Informer | Jeff Cork | 6.5 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 has a lot to love, but it’s overwhelmed by legacy issues and a slew of all-new ones that came along for the co-op ride | Read review |
Game Rant | Dalton Cooper | 3 / 5 stars | 06-03-2018 | Fans of the original game will like State of Decay 2, but others will be unable to look past its numerous technical issues, underwhelming co-op, and ugly graphics. | Read review |
Game Revolution | Jason Faulkner | 3 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | There’s still plenty of fun to be had in State of Decay 2, though, especially if you liked the original. | Read review |
Gameblog | Romain Mahut | 6 / 10 | 05-18-2018 | State of Decay 2 is an interesting “post zombie apocalypse life simulator” that forces the player to manage every aspect of a survivor’s life. It’s too bad that its story isn’t very interesting. And what to say about those bugs : there are just so many of them… With better production values, State of Decay could have been a truly special game. | Read review |
GameCrate | Christopher Atwood | 7.3 / 10 | 05-22-2018 | State of Decay 2 feels like it’s trying too hard to force the player to do too much. There’s no way for the player to really control the way they absorb the experience and more than a few of the mechanics break the careful relationship the rest of the game tries to foster. Overall, it’s the kind of game that you want to love, but that needs a lot of work. | Read review |
GameGrin | Oliver Smith | 6 / 10 | 05-31-2018 | With hardly any other true zombie survival simulations on the market, Undead Labs present a competent horror game. It’s rough around the edges, with many bugs and features that feel lacklustre, and a multiplayer that doesn’t fully deliver on its promise, but it’s still a fun ride with many other improvements over the original. For all of its faults, it’s an adventure you can rely on if you were a fan of the first. | Read review |
GameMAG | Blaze | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a good budget project for fans of games about zombies, now with co-op play. New game has some interesting mechanics and elements, but, sadly, quickly becomes boring. Given that the game is sold at half price, you can try it, especially if you liked the original. But if you are waiting for an interesting story and beautiful graphics, you can safely reduce the score by one point and pass by. | Read review |
GamePro | Michael Cherdchupan | 70 / 100 | 05-22-2018 | Game-mechanically interesting, but dramatically pale hybrid of survival horror and RPG for (multi) players with a passion for collecting things. | Read review |
Gamer Escape | Andrew Copeland | 7 / 10 | 07-21-2018 | What it really comes down to for State of Decay 2 is that unless you like games with slow resource gathering grinds, and don’t mind an odd bug here or there, this game isn’t going to be for you. The multiplayer can be enjoyable with friends, but at the end of the day, it just barely sets itself above the previous game in the series. | Read review |
Gamerheadquarters | Jason Stettner | 7.8 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a good improvement over the original, yet the removal of narrative elements for dynamic missions felt like a step back. | Read review |
Gamers Heroes | Johnny Hurricane | 4 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is going to be very hit and miss for a number of people. If you can ignore the flaws, there is a fun game to be had when played with a friend. That said, even if you ignore its flaws, you can’t deny that this game was not ready for release. | Read review |

GamesRadar+ | Alex Avard | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 confidently reaches the series’ potential as the ultimate zombie survival sim, even if it hits a few familiar bumps in the road on the way there. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Ravi Sinha | 6 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 isn’t a bad game but it doubles down on too much of the first game’s failings. For newcomers, the repetitive combat and mission variety, glitches and lack of polish can be a turnoff but the base-building and survivor management manage to shine. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Travis Northup | 85 / 100 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 improves upon its predecessor in almost every way. Although the game still suffers from a host of bugs and lacks much of a focused narrative, it succeeds at being a tremendously enjoyable and addictive experience. | Read review |
GearNuke | Danial Arshad Khan | 7 / 10 | 05-20-2018 | State of Decay 2 is another example of a game brimming with potential that ends up feeling bloated. It could have worked a lot better with a more polished experience but right now it appears to be all over the place with a focus on quantity rather than quality. | Read review |
Geek Culture | Jake Su | 7.3 / 10 | 06-01-2018 | A good, competent survival game that builds on the original, State of Decay 2 has plenty to love, but also plenty to improve on. | Read review |
Generación Xbox | Adrian Fuentes Berna | 7.9 / 10 | 05-16-2018 | State Of Decay 2 is a game that is committed to enhancing everything that its predecessor offered us. GRYOnline.pl | Dariusz Matusiak | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 has a dozen of bugs, a boring start, bad optimization and a repetitive gameplay. Against all odds, the gameplay offered by the game sucked me into the world of Zombie apocalypse and I want to play it more and more. It has this “spark” that makes you keep playing the game – a cool atmosphere, satisfying combat and sense of accomplishment that comes from every performed action. It is a Zombie-Survival-Gothic. | Read review |

Hobby Consolas | Alejandro Alcolea | 80 / 100 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 take the best things from the first game and power up the mechanics to create a very interesting survival and management game. IGN | Dan Stapleton | 7.5 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2’s zombie-infested maps are good places to scavenge, fight, and survive in. Combat is satisfyingly brutal and the special zombies inspire some real fear of permanent death, even though the Blood Plague turns out to be more of a sniffle. But the bugs are just as persistent as the zombies, and after a dozen or so hours the repetition of both eventually take their toll, making the appeal of replaying feel more limited than I’d expected for a sandbox RPG. | Read review |
IGN Italy | Francesco Destri | 8 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is the classic “more of the same” sequel which, however, thanks to some interesting innovations and a deep game formula, does not disappoint. | Read review |
IGN Middle East | Islam Ibrahim | 8 / 10 | 06-11-2018 | State of Decay 2 is one of the best survival and zombie games I have ever tried on the current generation of consoles. It is a game that offers an open world and gives you great freedom to do what you wish and create your base as you see fit. In repelling zombie hordes, is a great RPG game and worth trying of course compared to the price of only 30$. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Jose A. Rodríguez | 7.5 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | Deeper than the first instalment, State of Decay 2 improves several features and adds a deeper management system with an enormous map to explore and an interesting cooperative online system, even when still has several technical issues. | Read review |

JVL | Malcolm89 | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 keeps all its promises in terms of gameplay and offers us a real survival experience where the slightest mistake will be punished immediately. LevelUp | Luis Sánchez | 8 / 10 | 01-01-1970 | State of Decay 2 fulfills its premise without being too pretentious as an entry point to the misunderstood zombie survival genre. New Game Network | Tim Reid | 76 / 100 | 05-22-2018 | State of Decay 2 refines and builds upon the formula of managing the survival of a group during a zombie apocalypse, with mostly well balanced difficulty and smooth co-op integration making up for plain visuals and some rough edges. | Read review |
Niche Gamer | Cody Long | 6 / 10 | 05-27-2018 | As it stands, it’s a fun enough budget title that fails to live up to the expectation of fans, including myself. Paste Magazine | Cameron Kunzelman | 6.3 / 10 | 06-29-2018 | Overall, I have some mixed feelings about State of Decay 2. It is a game that feels less focused than its predecessor despite making strong moves to deepen the experience in every realm. Focusing in on the details somehow made the game lose something; the steps the game took forward cost something fundamental and core to the experience. | Read review |

Press Start | James Berich | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is just as good as the original but fails to make good on its major promises. There’s some great quality of life improvements here and there, but the repetitive goals to work towards and cursory co-op options stop it from being any better than the original. Despite all this, State of Decay 2’s gameplay loop is strangely alluring, but many won’t put up with its technical shortcomings. | Read review |
Rely On Horror | Tarrah Rivard | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | Despite these shortcomings, I could easily put another 100 hours into the game without issue, especially once I can team up with close friends. Rock, Paper, Shotgun | Brendan Caldwell | Not Recommended | 05-22-2018 | If you play in co-op, you’ll probably be able to ignore the flaws long enough to have a jolly evening or two with some friends (Windows 10 friends only, of course) and if you’re dead set on rolling around in the blood and gore, I suggest this is how you play it. | Read review |

SelectButton | Kevin Mitchell | 6 / 10 | 05-21-2018 | State of Decay 2’s promise of improving upon the existing formula with cooperative gameplay, fails to capture our attention and ultimately is a disappointment. I’ve lost countless vehicles due to improper collusion in a mostly static environment. While there is an “I’m stuck” option for players, nothing can resolve anything with your car stuck between a table and a wall. There are too many systems that don’t cohesively tie the package together. The game runs rather poorly, even on Xbox One X. The frame rate can undoubtedly dip well below 30 frames per second and is frequently under when on running on an Xbox One S. The included motion blur is way too aggressive, and even the slightest camera movement makes the visuals a blurry mess or swirling colors. | Read review |
Shacknews | Charles Singletary | 7 / 10 | 05-21-2018 | State of Decay 2 is repetitive, but fun when it works. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | Lexuzze Tablante | 8 / 10 | 05-29-2018 | While State of Decay 2 may not be visually appealing, the thrill and excitement that the game provides shine the most. Even the fear of losing one of your best lieutenants in the community is there. You have to treat the game like it was the real thing – a real zombie apocalypse. It’s a unique zombie game experience you never get to come across frequently. In short, State of Decay 2 is your ultimate zombie simulator. | Read review |
Slant Magazine | Jeremy Winslow | 2.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | In the end, State of Decay 2 doesn’t flip the script on the themes we’ve come to associate with the zombie apocalypses of our popular entertainments. Worse, the game doesn’t even bother to make it seem like its characters even want to be alive in the world. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Daniel Janák | 70 / 100 | 06-15-2018 | State of Decay 2 is just a better version of the first State of Decay game, but it has plenty of technical issues. For zombie fans, it’s still good game. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Domenico Musicò | 8 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a “bigger, better and more badass” sequel, with plenty of missions and activity to do. TechRaptor | Max Moeller | 6 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is a fun and immersive sim… when it works. There are some bugs and a few odd design choices, but the game does what it sets out to do well. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Danilo Dellafrana | 8.6 / 10 | 05-28-2018 | State of Decay 2 proves to be better than the first chapter in all its aspects, despite the limitations of the new multiplayer mode. The Jimquisition | Jim Sterling | Recommended | 07-21-2018 | State of Decay 2 is fine only because State of Decay is fine. As a sequel, Undead Labs’ retread is a letdown. | Read review |
The Outerhaven Productions | Keith Mitchell | 4 / 5 stars | 06-05-2018 | State of Decay 2 basically takes everything that made the first game enjoyable, tosses in base building and more interesting NPCs. The combat is just as visceral and you’ll still fight to stay alive in this post-apocalyptic zombie-filled world. A tad repetitive at times but still has more than enjoy to keep you entertained. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Dominic Leighton | 7 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | If you’re looking for a compelling and atmospheric take on the zombie genre that’s more Walking Dead than Left 4 Dead, State of Decay 2 is an imperfect but enjoyable sequel to the superior original. The gameplay loop of scavenging, crafting and killing can begin to wear thin, but the human element is capable of pulling you back in. Tackling the world with others in tow may decimate the game’s carefully constructed atmosphere, but those multiplayer shenanigans will probably be wild enough to distract from the host of technical issues that simply refuse to die. | Read review |

Twinfinite | Chris Jecks | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | I had a lot of fun with State of Decay 2… when it was all working. Its core gameplay loop is repetitive, but there’s a sense of satisfaction in seeing your community move from a small base with no water and power to a dominant force in the town capable of sustaining itself on its own that kept driving me forward. | Read review |
USgamer | Caty McCarthy | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-17-2018 | If you can deal with a healthy dose of bugs, State of Decay 2 is an extremely satisfying and unpredictable management sim with a solid action-survival game laid on top. The sequel’s improved UI, new multiplayer component, and additional maps help it stand out from its predecessor, even if the moment-to-moment is largely the same. | Read review |
VGChartz | Brandon J. Wysocki | 6 / 10 | 05-16-2018 | Some of the execution has more room for improvement than you’d expect from a sequel, but overall it provides a unique, fun, and satisfying gameplay experience. | Read review |
VGN | Giovanni Marrelli | 8 / 10 | 05-15-2018 | State of Decay 2 refines the formula of the original episode without overturning it: with good tricks and a couple of novelties not bad, among all the possibility to play in cooperative mode with other friends, the survival of Undead Labs confirms itself one of the best exponents for lovers of the horror genre, with a budget price that counters a technical sector that is certainly not exceptional. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Alice Bell | 6 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 has some fun additions that can keep things interesting. Just not quite interesting enough (especially when contending with a clutch of performance issues). | Read review |
Wccftech | Alessio Palumbo | 7.5 / 10 | 05-17-2018 | State of Decay 2 is every bit as fun and rough as the first game was in 2013. It feels like a game that would have massively benefited from additional resources during development given its numerous technical shortcomings, but even so, its core (improved in this sequel) remains unique and fun to play, especially with friends. It’s one of those titles that can be described as being more than the sum of its parts. | Read review |
