With Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Sony’s charmers-in-chief deliver another lesson in laid-back, unpretentious fun.
The graphics are absolutely stunning but the gameplay is predictable and surprisingly uneventful, as the game fails to leverage its technical achievements for anything more than straightforward spectacle.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart looks and plays better than ever thanks to new-generation hardware, but it’s still the same lovable, goofy series at heart.

Areajugones | Unknown | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is, on the one hand, a sublime technical experience that makes perfect use of the benefits of PS5 to be the most next-gen thing I’ve played so far. But on the other hand, it is much more than a simple demonstration of power. | Read review |
Atomix | Alberto Desfassiaux | 94 / 100 | 06-08-2021 | It goes without saying that if you already have a PS5 in your house, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is something that you simply cannot pass up, because it is precisely one of the things that justifies having spent so much on a new generation console. It is one of those games in which it hurts to progress because each time you do it, you are closer to the inevitable end. | Read review |

CGMagazine | Zubi Khan | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | With over a dozen games in the long-running series, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart still manages to feel fresh and exciting, taking full advantage of the PlayStation 5 by delivering what, for many, may be their first taste at a definitive next-gen feeling game for the still-budding platform. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Elliot Attard | 8 / 10 | 06-13-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is another action adventure triumph for PlayStation and Insomniac Games. It’s got a world that’s so full of colour and life, lovable new characters who bring clever diversity to a well-established cast, and an ever-changing gameplay loop that’s downright fun and engaging. Even if the game panders a little too heavily to a younger audience for my taste, it still excels in enough areas to make this an easy recommendation for nostalgic fans and newcomers alike. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Raúl Pinto | Recommended | 06-11-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: A Dimension Apart is a funny action-adventure game in which you’ll control both Ratchet and River in a multitude of shootouts and platform challenges. A game made for both children and adults alike to enjoy, where the scenarios, although small, have an intelligent and entertaining approach, the characters are very well designed and the color palette is spectacular. The worst point is its sound section, but that, thanks to an impeccable voice acting, is saved. | Read review |
COGconnected | Paul Sullivan | 93 / 100 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has something for almost everyone. Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 9.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | I think it’s impossible to put down your controller once you finish Rift Apart for the first time, and not have a smile on your face. It’s a game that’s chicken soup for the soul, nourishing and positive content that’s just incredibly wholesome to consume. Loud with its setpiece moments and surprisingly introspective with its emotional haymakers, all of its style and substance comes together to create not only a colourful, and wonderfully mad showcase for the PS5, but also the definitive Ratchet and Clank adventure for the next generation of gaming. | Read review |
Daily Mirror | JC Suttun | 4 / 5 stars | 06-07-2021 | Insomniac Games have once again delivered an astonishingly well-made adventure which undoubtedly offers plenty to Ratchet & Clank veterans while acting as a perfect stand-alone entry point for newbies. It doesn’t really do anything revolutionary, but what it does do, it does with fantastic production values, attention to detail and a never-ending sense of fun. EGM | Michael Goroff | 10 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the first game I’ve played since the ninth-generation consoles launched that feels like a true next-gen title. Insomniac Games has done everything that it needed to do in making both a sequel to its longest-running franchise and a true next-gen exclusive. While it might not technically be a PlayStation 5 launch title, it feels like one-a real preview of the console’s capabilities. Everyeye.it | Marco Mottura | 8.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is an experience that pleases, entertains and excites, but also flows guided and within limited tracks (and I’m not necessarily referring to the rails to grind in passages from the interaction inversely proportional to the majesty of the show), without perhaps ever upsetting beyond the disturbing technical aspect. | Read review |

Gameblog | Thomas Pillon | 8 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Thanks to its gorgeous visuals and deeper narrative, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart arises the series to a new level. Gaming Nexus | Charlie Coleman | 9.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a true showpiece of new-gen technology. Whilst the internet argues over the matter of cross-generation games, Rift Apart avoids any such controversy since what it’s doing simply isn’t possible on the older hardware. I was tempted to go ahead and award a perfect score, but a familiar formula and some lacklustre puzzling prevented me from doing so. On the whole, though, this is gaming’s summer blockbuster in the same vein that Hollywood emphasises this season for its big releases. For those with a PS5, it’s an absolute must-play as a showcase of what’s possible beyond just prettier graphics and faster framerates. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Shubhankar Parijat | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | With an incredible arsenal of weapons, thrilling combat, a charming story full of loveable characters, and visuals to make your eyes pop, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart might just be the best game in the series to date. | Read review |
GamingTrend | David Burdette | 95 / 100 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the best games I’ve played this year. It’s fun, it’s endearing, and I just want to play it again. The gameplay isn’t much different, but it’s refined and has aged like a fine wine, with the technical prowess on display we’ve come to expect from Insomniac Games. If you’re looking for a great narrative, the story is arguably the best in the series, with the grandeur of a Marvel movie in tow. One could imply the game isn’t long enough, but that’s only because they put down the controller, and that’s just not what you’re going to do if you have a copy of Rift Apart. | Read review |

The quality of the game is so high, that my many issues didn’t detriment my enjoyment of the experience. That’s definitely a testament of Insomniac’s abilities as a developer, and the overall work that went into crafting this experience. With more fluid and engaging combat, cool set pieces, and tons of great weapons, this may be my favorite Ratchet & Clank game. The visuals are breathtaking and the overall presentation is fantastic, making for a true test of the PlayStation 5 hardware. | Read review |

IGN Middle East | Mufaddal Fakhruddin | 8 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet and Clank’s wacky adventures is always a reliable recipe for a fun, exciting time out, and A Rift’s Apart brings that to the table by the bucketload. However, it’s hard to ignore the fact that the game could have been a lot more than what it is, with the new ingredients brought in by the whole dimension angle failing to give it the right amount of kick to reach its true potential. As such, the series’ first outing on the PlayStation 5 is great but it doesn’t deviate too far from what the series has always done when it really could have. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Álex Pareja | 7.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | A continuist sequel but that knows how to add what is necessary and incorporate new ideas. It’s true that the greater breadth of its maps is not fully exploited and that wanting to make a longer game by repeating situations and enemies turn virtue into routine, but Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a great PS5 game, very fun and recommended. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Andrew Bistak | 5 / 5 stars | 06-11-2021 | From the very first level to the very last, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is a true gaming treat that I thoroughly enjoyed and it was like being a Rollercoaster ride between dimensions. It delivered an almost flawless gaming experience that boasts next-gen visuals and mechanics plus an over the top and light-hearted story with two equally entertaining and engaging protagonists, Ratchet and Rivet. So if you’re looking for that true next-gen exclusive on the PlayStation 5, Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is indeed that game that makes it my first must play title of 2021. | Read review |
INDIANTVCZ | Tereza Krečová | 10 / 10 | 08-06-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has always been a game with great ambitions. To bring back a good old series in modern way isn’t for everyone and yet Insomniac Games did everything right. The story of Ratchet and Clank is worthy of every single animated movie. It will take you on an engaging expedition to save the world through magnificent cut-scenes with professional voice-over. But unlike animated movies this adventure is there to be experienced. Gameplay follows the standards of action adventure and platform games and in many ways, it goes even beyond. The layout of action, slow story moments and logic is breathtaking and every single time you spend with Ratchet, Clank and Rivet will be the time you enjoy. Battles are still a little bit more chaotic and you have to take some time to get along with the aiming, but in the final judgment Rift Apart offers you an experience, which won’t leave you steady till the final battle no matter what. Planets are just wonderful as is the graphic and technological processing managed by console PlayStation 5. The next part isn’t trying to change anything in its core or to be something entirely new or different. It just wants to do the honor to the famous and beloved couple of heroes. And it does that damn well. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is one of the best games in its genre. That is something that can’t be changed by any smaller mistake. If you want an action adventure with platform attributes, you don’t have to search any further. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the world you are looking for. And a game with hardly any competitor of the same nature. | Read review |

It’s very much a next-gen game that truly feels like it could only be done on the next-gen hardware thanks to the ray tracing performance and faster SSD, combined with the new dualsense haptic feedback, it feels truly unique up there with Returnal and Astro Bot. Its presentation is phenomenally well done while providing a story that doesn’t feel forced for the sake of a new entry, instead, it continues the story and introduces new faces that are great enough to be new welcomed staples for the future. PlayStation LifeStyle | Chandler Wood | 9.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is proof that some series are timeless. It celebrates and retains the classic gameplay first created nearly 20 years ago, while simultaneously feeling completely at home as a showcase PS5 title. It tells a heartfelt story that explores beyond Ratchet and Clank, bringing in new characters that stand tall in their own right. And those tools of destruction? They’re here in spades, more destructive than ever before. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart continues the PlayStation legacy, and I can’t help but hope that in time it heralds the return of the PlayStation buddy platformers of old. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Joe Apsey | 7.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Technically Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a PS5 showstopper, offering stunning graphics and set pieces that make use of the PS5’s SSD, while also looking like the best animated movie we have ever seen. But, although combat is fun, the narrative of Rift Apart really drags down the experience, not treating its characters with respect and not meaningfully progressing the story for long time fans and leaving newcomers confused. Press Start | Kieron Verbrugge | 9.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Some minor missed opportunities aside this Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart is an unforgettable, unbelievably gorgeous and downright addictive game and easily the best entry in the fan-favourite franchise. For all of its jaw-dropping visuals, industry-leading design and writing packed with heart and humour it succeeds on first and foremost being a really good time. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the most fun I’ve had with a DualSense in my hand and it stands as the best current reason to own a PS5. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Paulo Roberto Montanaro | 90 / 100 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is brilliant, beautiful and a lot of fun. It offers fluid gameplay, a rounded narrative and just-in-time innovations. | Read review |
Push Square | Sammy Barker | 8 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the best game in the series since Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, which franchise fans will recognise as high praise. The familiar combat is elevated by outstanding DualSense implementation, while Insomniac Games’ imaginative gameplay design keeps each planet interesting and engaging. It’s not a particularly challenging platformer, nor is it necessarily all that original – but it doesn’t need to be. This is one of those games that’s just really, really good. | Read review |
Rapid Reviews UK | Daryl Leach | 4.5 / 5 stars | 06-30-2021 | Ratchet and Clank are PlayStation icons, with their futuristic escapades giving 3D-adventuring masterclasses ever since the PlayStation 2 days. I remember playing and loving the original game, whilst every entry since has been top class too. They have been welcome faces on the platform since 2002, with their adventures certainly standing the test of time. | Read review |
Saudi Gamer | عصام الشهوان | 8 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | A fast-paced game with a good amount of varied content. It might not be the jump some expected but it’s nevertheless a well-done game suitable for a lot of players. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Rob Gordon | 4.5 / 5 stars | 06-13-2021 | In short, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is simply brilliant. Between its thrilling gameplay, fantastic graphics, and charming story, it’s a must-have for PS5 players everywhere. There haven’t been many games to justify a step into the new console generation as of yet, but this is definitely one of them. | Read review |

Shacknews | Ozzie Mejia | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Whether you’ve had adventures with Ratchet & Clank in the past or not, Rift Apart is not a game to be missed. It’s one of the best games you can get for your PS5 and one of the best games of 2021 so far, period. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | Lexuzze Tablante | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is another exciting PS5 exclusive that showcases the console’s spectacular power. Backed with impressive voice actors, an entertaining narrative, and marvelous weapons and combat, Rift Apart is still a system seller despite the underwhelming Rivet gameplay. | Read review |

Slant Magazine | Aaron Riccio | 3 / 5 stars | 06-25-2021 | Despite its title’s declaration of intent, though, Rift Apart isn’t willing to stand on its own. That’s most evident in the game’s Anomaly puzzles, where you must interact with physical representations of all of Clank’s and Kit’s dimensional possibilities. This is predetermination in action. There’s only one acceptable route for you to guide these representations, like lemmings, down, and that’s the one that has them marching in lockstep along the same path that has defined every Ratchet & Clank to date. In the end, Rift Apart is a superficially entertaining but deeply unfulfilling adventure—one that, like the latest Star Wars trilogy, mistakes a shiny new coat of paint as reason enough to exist. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Martin Kubeš | 95 / 100 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank debut on PlayStation 5 with their most impressive adventure yet. It’s hard to find any real issues with Rift Apart, so just go ahead and enjoy the ride. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Unknown | 8.2 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart shows where the series is going in the near future. There are some minor hiccups and wasted opportunities, but the new chapter is undoubtedly a solid one. | Read review |

The Games Machine | Emanuele Feronato | 9.3 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | I’d like to fill the box with “buy it, it’s beautiful!” as Jack Torrance with “morning has gold in his mouth.” There would be nothing more to add but it would not be professional. So I’m going to talk about fast-paced and fun action, tons of enemies to eliminate in the most creative ways, intriguing story, no uploads, intuitive and responsive controls, properly exploited PS5 hardware, puzzles to solve, last hitpoint battles, planets to explore, mounts to ride, secrets to discover, weapons to upgrade, armor to collect, damn I ran out of space, then buy it, it’s beautiful! | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Tuffcub | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the PlayStation 5 showcase you have been waiting for. Instantaneous travel to worlds thanks to the SSD, thumping 3D audio, ray tracing through the gorgeous levels, and clever use of the DualSense bring the many locations to life. Paired with classic Ratchet & Clank gameplay, this game is a riotous feast of explosions, platforming, and fast paced action. | Read review |
Too Much Gaming | Carlos Hernandez | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Either as an adult or a kid experiencing the series for the first time, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will show you why many have stuck around with the series for this long since it first appeared in 2002, and why you’ll see more of it for years to come. | Read review |
TrueGaming | عمر العمودي | 9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | The action-packed campaign and the utilization of the Playstation 5’s capabilities make Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart one of the richest and enjoyable experiences in the series and one of the best-looking games on the Playstation 5. | Read review |
TrustedReviews | Ryan Jones | 4.5 / 5 stars | 06-08-2021 | Rift Apart is unquestionably one of the best PS5 games available right now, and should appeal to both series newcomers and those who’ve followed the duo since their PS2 heyday. | Read review |
Unboxholics | Θέμης Μπολτσής | Recommended | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a fantastic adventure that keeps you with a smile on your face for about 10-13 hours. VG247 | Tom Orry | Recommended | 06-08-2021 | This is a full-fat, planet-hopping, mystery-filled adventure that PS5 owners will lap up and non-owners will resent not being able to play, perhaps through no lack of trying. | Read review |
Video Chums | A.J. Maciejewski | 8.6 / 10 | 06-09-2021 | Once Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s credits rolled, I was impressed by the adventure that I just went on. With that being said, I couldn’t help but want to dive into the original games again to have a more visceral and challenging experience. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Josh Wise | 8 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | In vesting each weapon with the click and whir of a plaything, it gives you a way into the texture of its landscape, and before long you’re swept up. | Read review |
Washington Post | Christopher Byrd | Recommended | 06-08-2021 | In a time when sneering, ironic detachment remains in fashion, Insomniac Games has created the rare modern masterpiece with no convoluted agenda, no subtext — just so many reasons to smile and laugh. This purity is felt through every pixel, every line reading and every planet. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Todd Eggleston | 9.5 / 10 | 07-02-2021 | Insomniac did something great in reminding us that the best of games can still just be fun. That doesn’t mean to toss away narrative or to do without seriousness, but that a game doesn’t need to rely on them. PlayStation has been knocking them out of the park this gen, yet somehow Ratchet & Clank finds itself standing a Rift Apart of the competition. | Read review |
Wccftech | Chris Wray | 9.5 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Through outstanding storytelling, exquisite visuals, and gripping gameplay, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart proves to be an engaging, fun, funny, and thoroughly enjoyable return to the series. It also offers the introduction to two brand new characters that could arguably be the protagonists of their own spin-off, or at least return to future entries in the series. For fans and new players alike, this is a game I would recommend for everybody and a true showing of the sort of titles we should expect for the new generation. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | David Morgan | 5 / 5 stars | 06-08-2021 | Rift Apart is a technical showcase, but it’s also one of the finest 3D action platformers since Jak and Daxter. Insomniac consistently proves that the Ratchet and Clank series is a wellspring of potential, and they’ve delivered a complete experience that’s as full of heart as it is surprises. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Adam Ryan | 9.5 / 10 | 06-09-2021 | Easily the best Ratchet & Clank game in the series, Rift Apart also manages to be the most technically and graphically impressive game of the current generation so far. | Read review |
Worth Playing | Redmond Carolipio | 8.9 / 10 | 06-08-2021 | Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart could be one of the first true all-encompassing showcases for the PS5. If there’s one small nitpick, it’s that I felt that some of the larger confrontations got slightly repetitive | Read review |
