NBA 2K24 scores big with gameplay, but its microtransaction tactics feel like a costly turnover.
Visual Concepts continues to provide the most authentic simulation in sports gaming, but the in-game economy is on a fast break to the bottom.
Regardless of what this review says, NBA 2K24 will sell millions of copies, and generate millions of dollars through VC. That is because basketball fans who want to play a basketball game have nowhere else to go. The on court action is really good, but without competition to keep them honest, 2K’s monetization has got out of hand and made modes like MyCareer near unplayable without extra investment from players.

Attack of the Fanboy | Franklin Bellone Borges | 3.5 / 5 stars | 09-13-2023 | NBA 2K24 offers an extremely polished experience, given its unrivaled on-court feel and a few welcome additions, but questionable decisions and an uncanny push toward microtransactions hurt what could otherwise be considered a natural step forward for the franchise. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Amin Bala Zadeh | 9 / 10 | 09-25-2023 | NBA 2K24 is a solid Basketball sim that offers tons of content, and the new ProPlay animation technology takes the gameplay to a whole new level, making it one of the most complete NBA games we’ve seen in recent memory. | Read review |
Bazimag | Bahram Bigharaz | 7 / 10 | 09-26-2023 | In the quest for gameplay excellence and the celebration of basketball history, NBA 2K24 teeters on the edge of brilliance. Yet, it’s disheartening to see this potential masterpiece obscured by the dark cloud of microtransactions. As players, we must hope that future iterations of the game find a balance that preserves the joy of basketball gaming without placing an unfair financial burden on its fans. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Kyle Foley | 7 / 10 | 09-11-2023 | NBA 2K24 features revamped gameplay through ProPLAY and small game mode tweaks that make it a worthwhile upgrade. Not everything is perfect, and there is still so much room for growth in future games, but NBA 2K24 is a promising step forward in a franchise that has been complacent in recent years without any real competition. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Shamus White | 6.5 / 10 | 09-26-2023 | No two basketball games play out the same, and the same can be said for NBA 2K24’s variety of modes and features. ProPlay was a welcome addition to the overall feel of the gameplay, adding an extra level of realism. Some modes work extremely well, like The W, and others like the career mode fizzle out, but overall the gameplay itself is great. Unfortunately, having microtransactions at what feels like every corner is a real letdown for something that otherwise has real potential. | Read review |
COGconnected | Michael Chow | 70 / 100 | 09-22-2023 | NBA 2K24 continues to dominate the paint when it comes to mainstream success. It also looks to dominate the wallets of fans each year. The game is undoubtedly fun to play along with its great gameplay and graphics, but the gutting of MyCAREER and increased incorporation of virtual currency does leave a bad taste at times. | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 7.5 / 10 | 09-22-2023 | It’s not the best entry into the franchise, but most certainly not the worst, but NBA 2K24 may be reaching far beyond downtown, and undoubtedly missing after the final buzzer. | Read review |
Everyeye.it | Raffaello Rusconi | 8 / 10 | 09-20-2023 | NBA 2K24 is one of those titles difficult to judge and above all to which to attribute a numerical value that can balance its great playful goals and disappointing greed. | Read review |
Expansive | Jay Jones | 7 / 10 | 09-11-2023 | NBA 2K24 is the GOAT of Basketball Games. Time and again, 2K have proven that they are fantastic custodians of this license and have paid fantastic respect to legends of the sport, the presentation of the league, and have crafted a real feel of being right on top of the action between the roaring of the crowd and the halftime entertainment. It is easier than ever for new players to onboard, the ProPlay means NBA has never looked or felt better, and outside of a few minor technical hiccups, I have personally never enjoyed an NBA 2K more than 24. However, the microtransaction situation has arguably worsened, and it is harder than ever for those new players to break through or maximise their potential unless they’re willing to pay the price. With an additional two premium tiers on top of Seasons and the fact you can buy cards outright on MyTeam, you can easily spend more in game than on the game itself within a weekend. While this isn’t the only sports game out there that does it, at times NBA 2K24 feels among the worst. | Read review |
Game Informer | Nico Vergara | 6 / 10 | 09-11-2023 | Following the innovative and pleasantly surprising NBA 2K23, I expected Visual Concepts to build upon its success and introduce even more improvements with its latest entry in the long-running basketball series. But instead of mirroring the Black Mamba’s gradual rise to permanent relevancy, NBA 2K24 sadly feels like a stop-gap – a quick hit to temporarily satisfy diehard fans. If this continues, the series could veer closer to a forgettable imitation of Kobe’s signature move: a fadeaway into obscurity. | Read review |
Gamefa | Mostafa Zahedi | 7.5 / 10 | 09-20-2023 | despite delivering a acceptable experience, NBA 2K24 focuses too much on microtransactions and leaves little space for normal progression. and on top of that, it’s basically the same game as previous year, with some small additions like Mamba Moments. If you’re a die hard fan of basketball, you’ll have a blast playing NBA 2K24, but you’ll be hardly surprised | Read review |
GameGrin | Mike Crewe | 7 / 10 | 09-16-2023 | Pay-to-win mechanics aside, NBA 2K24 is a solid basketball sim with unrivalled authenticity; just don’t expect a huge leap forward from last year’s title. | Read review |
GAMES.CH | Olaf Bleich | 77 / 100 | 09-15-2023 | NBA 2K24 is a superb sports-gameplay. It delivers high-level basketball on the court and also presents the action like a modern TV-broadcast. Along with a lot of basketball-nostalgia and tons of game-modes, “NBA 2K24” is an overall better package than its predecessor. However, microtransactions and the pay-to-win-mentality seriously hurt two of its two main game moves and leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. | Read review |
GameSpot | Mark Delaney | 6 / 10 | 10-04-2023 | Visual Concepts continues to provide the most authentic simulation in sports gaming, but the in-game economy is on a fast break to the bottom. | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Jason Dailey | 8 / 10 | 09-19-2023 | NBA 2K24 delivers the most authentic on-court gameplay in the series’ history thanks to the new ProPLAY technology. Gameplay feels less scripted, animations feel less canned, and modern players perform closer to their real counterparts than ever before. Some modes and features still feel largely untouched from years past, while MyCAREER caters to veteran and pay-to-win players, but I guess we can’t have it all. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Matt Bianucci | 5 / 10 | 09-19-2023 | NBA 2K24’s lack of meaningful updates and continued overwhelming presence of microtransactions make it feel like it’s going through the motions and doesn’t have anything to say. | Read review |
Generación Xbox | Javier Bassols | 7.7 / 10 | 09-18-2023 | NBA 2K24 is still a good option to enjoy basketball on our consoles. Fun gameplay, enough game modes to entertain you for hundreds of hours and the possibility of reliving the most iconic moments of Kobe Bryant’s career. As we said, NBA 2K24 seeks to play simple. Pick and Roll and tray to board, we do not need more. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Chris White | 7 / 10 | 09-14-2023 | NBA 2K24 is fantastic to play on the court, but Virtual Currency stops your everyday player from seeing any proper progression for hours. | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Cory Wells | 3 / 5 stars | 09-14-2023 | After the large strides last year, the minimal announcements for updates to this year’s game raised a red flag. | Read review |
Hey Poor Player | Andrew Thornton | 2.5 / 5 stars | 09-19-2023 | There’s still a lot of good basketball in NBA 2K24 but it mostly feels buried in modes the developers are trying hard to keep new players from discovering. The series’ formerly rock-solid gameplay foundation feels like it’s slowly slipping away as well. Minor improvements around the edges don’t offset this slippage and the series’ continued descent into being nearly unplayable without spending a fortune on microtransactions. If you’re a series veteran who is willing to spend the vast amounts of money needed to compete online, you already know you’re buying this. The same is true of long-time series veterans who know where to find the best parts of the game even when they’re hidden away. With all its issues, though, it’s hard to recommend NBA 2K24 to anyone else. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | David Rodriguez | 75 / 100 | 09-13-2023 | NBA 2K24 is a shot on the board, a shot for sure that you know is going to go in, but we preferred to see a clean three-pointer from the corner. The basketball simulation returns one more year with a lukewarm tribute to the Mamba, without too much ambition and seasoned with micropayments, but with a playable invoice and brilliant technique. | Read review |
IGN | Ben Vollmer | 6 / 10 | 09-11-2023 | NBA 2K24 scores big with gameplay, but its microtransaction tactics feel like a costly turnover. | Read review |
LevelUp | Víctor Rosas | 8 / 10 | 09-21-2023 | For better or worse, NBA 2K continues to get its way and this year’s installment is no exception. If you are an NBA fan looking for a traditional gaming experience to take your favorite team to the top. However, you should know that the full enjoyment of everything that NBA 2K24 offers is limited by its already traditional, and not at all pleasant, transactions. | Read review |
Merlin’in Kazanı | Yusuf Canpolat | 70 / 100 | 09-14-2023 | If you’re looking for a basketball game with updated rosters and you want a good game, NBA 2K24 is the best option to go for. But when we think that it comes out every year and compare it to last year, we can’t put anything on it this year. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | Steve Boxer | 7 / 10 | 09-14-2023 | Impressively well produced and extremely playable, but there are few changes from last year and the microtransactions are still obnoxious. | Read review |
New Game Network | Eric Hall | 73 / 100 | 09-21-2023 | Despite some issues and a weaker entry than last year, there’s still plenty to enjoy in NBA 2K24. The gameplay continues to be refined with smart tweaks, and the visuals are among the best in the genre. However, the continued push of microtransactions continues to leave a sour taste, and MyCareer is a disappointment this time out. | Read review |
Nintendo Life | Jim Norman | 5 / 10 | 09-15-2023 | NBA 2K24 is less a continuation of what made the series good on Switch and more a downgrade of what has come before it. Even with how smoothly this one plays on the console, with some clean animations and a sprinkling of improvements to MyTeam being the real MVPs, all of this is overshadowed by just how watered-down this year’s entry feels. With none of the new game modes making the jump to Switch apart from the disappointing Mamba Moments, a severely lessened MyCareer and a model that continues to be plagued by microtransactions and long load times, the 2K franchise on Switch has never needed more of a boost. If you are after a basketball game on the go, last year’s offering is a much better option. | Read review |
NoobFeed | Azfar Rayan | 85 / 100 | 09-16-2023 | Although NBA 2K24 may be a slam dunk in many respects, it is not a radical departure from its predecessor, NBA 2K23, in terms of the overall gameplay experience. The same NBA teams will be featured in the game, and the gameplay will not undergo any significant changes. It is safe to assume that if you are a fan of the franchise, you will find a lot to appreciate here. There is a lot to love about this installment. The inclusion of Pro Play Mamba moments, along with the ongoing development of my career, contribute to the fascinating nature of the title. | Read review |
Operation Sports | Kevin Scott | Not Recommended | 09-15-2023 | As good as the basketball can be when you’re in the thick of the action, the pervasive presence of microtransactions threatens to ruin the entire appeal of the game’s flagship modes. In MyCareer, you’re not only all but required to purchase virtual currency to improve your attributes as in the past but now will need to buy a season pass or else run the risk of having your trusty badges regress to the point where they’re almost useless. MyTeam’s card-collecting mode has a similar pay-to-win framework where you can purchase level rewards or spend what feels like an eternity trying to unlock them instead. Both MyCareer and MyTeam have an offline component to offer some consolation, but taking your skills online will likely have you at a competitive disadvantage against anyone with deep pockets. | Read review |
Oyungezer Online | Engin Vural | 7.5 / 10 | 09-21-2023 | Under normal circumstances, it would be a game I would recommend to any basketball fan with my eyes closed, but now it leaves a bitter taste in the mouth with its monetization model that pushes the limits of tolerance. Still, it’s clearly the best basketball game to play right now. | Read review |
PC Invasion | Matthew Kevin Mitchell | 6 / 10 | 09-18-2023 | NBA 2K24 has made several noteworthy improvements, like its addition of ProPLAY, which amps up the realism, and a modern approach to the game’s presentation that makes it feel fresh. However, it’s disappointing that the otherwise fantastic simulation experience is marred by the game’s microtransactions, transforming it into a pay-to-win model. Unless you are a basketball enthusiast who wants to collect every title in the NBA 2K series, it’s best to skip NBA 2K24. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Timothy Nunes | 7 / 10 | 09-19-2023 | In NBA 2K24, some thoughtful additions to gameplay visuals and mechanics get deeply overshadowed by some minute growing pains with ProPlay, some major hurtles dodging gacha pop-ups, and plenty presentation hindrances that keep you from playing the actual game. Behind all that is still a fantastic basketball game, even if it doesn’t feel different enough from last year to merit a must-buy status, even for basketball fans. | Read review |
Press Start | Josh Lack | 7 / 10 | 09-16-2023 | NBA 2K24 is the most NBA 2K game you could imagine, rocking moderate improvements to gameplay without really providing offering anything exciting enough to entice lapsed fans back onto the court. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Thiago de Alencar Moura | 75 / 100 | 09-14-2023 | NBA 2K24 is both an incredible basketball simulator at its best on the court and a game tainted by the glut of microtransactions it tries to sell to players. While all modes deliver plenty of content and are long, long-lasting experiences, their success for the player depends heavily on your tolerance for someone trying to sell you something all the time. | Read review |
Push Square | Sammy Barker | 6 / 10 | 09-18-2023 | There’s no doubt NBA 2K24 is the best presented sports game on the market, and it’s also arguably the most complete, with a dizzying selection of modes and features to accommodate all playstyles and tastes. But an insidious overreliance on microtransactions and player retention yet again detracts from the MyCAREER mode, which to its credit feels much more focused this year. There’s still a lot to like about this game, and depending on which modes you enjoy, you may never have to interact with the nefarious aspects at all. But it does sour what is otherwise an enjoyable game. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Carrie Lambertsen | 3 / 5 stars | 09-18-2023 | Ultimately, what makes NBA 2K24 wonderful ends up being negatively overshadowed by the level of pay-to-win that the game has. There are many cosmetic items for styling MyPlayer with fun clothing or having fancy new hoverboards and animations that all would have been plenty valuable as microtransactions, adding in the ability to improve actual game skills by paying money was an unnecessary and distracting feature. The game itself is fun, realistic, and addictive, and could easily be a must-play for any basketball fan if the in-game purchases can be overlooked. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Jaroslav Otčenáš | 6.5 / 10 | 10-03-2023 | After Michael Jordan, the main character of the current NBA season is Kobe Bryant. But if you want more changes in game, you will be disappointed. And the fun is still spoiled by microtransactions. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Giulia Garassino | 7 / 10 | 09-20-2023 | NBA 2K24 is, at least on consoles, an interesting product. It is a good chapter that presents some very appreciable innovations. The gameplay system, for example, is perhaps one of the best we’ve seen over the years, the difficulty in the game is commensurate with the level chosen, player control has improved, and the same goes for the AI. | Read review |
Sports Gamers Online | Christopher Walker | 8 / 10 | 09-17-2023 | There’s enough enjoyability in the gameplay department to overlook the heavy cloud of microtransactions that’s around every corner of the game | Read review |
The Games Machine | Nicholas Mercurio | 8 / 10 | 09-19-2023 | NBA 2K24 is a video game that convinces but falls short on microtransactions in the career mode, improving little, offering an interesting city to explore and in which to make choices. The progress made is notable, especially in the most requested ways, but it could have aimed for something more. | Read review |
The Outerhaven Productions | Karl Smart | 2 / 5 stars | 09-19-2023 | NBA 2K24 shows that there is a bigger problem with gaming today. While you can get a good game out there if you decide to make it into a “games as a service” model with the main goal being purchased over skill, the game itself gets lost under an avalanche of hate because of corporate greed. NBA 2K24 is the game that shows this to be true. As a game, NBA 2K24 is the same great game it always is, but the hard push for you to open your wallet hurt the game too much overall… And Michael Jordan is the GOAT. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Aran Suddi | 5 / 10 | 09-17-2023 | Regardless of what this review says, NBA 2K24 will sell millions of copies, and generate millions of dollars through VC. That is because basketball fans who want to play a basketball game have nowhere else to go. The on court action is really good, but without competition to keep them honest, 2K’s monetisation has got out of hand and made modes like MyCareer near unplayable without extra investment from players. | Read review |
Unboxholics | Γιώργος Πρίτσκας | Not Recommended | 09-24-2023 | Unfortunately, the NBA 2K series has long been on a path that no matter how great things it accomplishes on its virtual court, it’s hard to celebrate. Every year the situation with microtransactions and its commercial identity either remains the same or worsens. And every year we say how bad it is that these tactics overshadow a truly remarkable basketball game. The same, Unfortunately, we will also say this year. NBA 2K24 is better than ever in terms of gameplay, full of options, can provide truly endless hours of fun, and is a well-crafted tribute to the great Kobe Bryant. And all these not insignificant achievements, he has managed, to take second place. Pity. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Leonardo Faria | 7 / 10 | 09-20-2023 | You know the drill at this point: NBA 2K24 is just like its predecessors, in both the good and bad ways. It still looks impressive and has great controls, but it is also plastered with convoluted menus and a ridiculous amount of ads and microtransactions. What can I even add at this point which hasn’t been said in my previous five reviews of NBA 2K iterations? It’s good as an arcade experience, it’s frustrating elsewhere, and you know for a fact nothing will change because there is no need to innovate when you don’t have to deal with competitors. | Read review |
Wccftech | Nathan Birch | 7.5 / 10 | 09-19-2023 | NBA 2K24 doesn’t feel like the work of a team that’s hungry as a majority of the game’s modes and features aren’t much of a step up over last year. It’s a shame, because the on-court action, brought to new life by innovative ProPlay animation tech, is more accomplished than ever and MyCareer actually makes some welcome changes amid all the microtransactions. NBA 2K24 delivers plenty of polished roundball fun, but some of the choices the game’s developers made following last year’s excellent entry make me question their coaching. | Read review |
Windows Central | Anthony J Nash | 3.5 / 5 stars | 09-17-2023 | NBA 2K24 is a great game that features some of the best features the franchise has had in years. A streamlined MyCareer mode, additions to MyNBA Eras, and more should make this a classic. However, microtransactions litter nearly every meaningful mode, ruining what would be a stellar entry. | Read review |
ZTGD | Ryan | 6 / 10 | 09-25-2023 | It’s a real shame that the reputation of this franchise has evolved over the last 5 years from the standard of the best of what sports games can offer to a shining example of its worst excesses. Comparing this game to MLB The Show, another game that offers microtransactions, only increases how egregiously 2K exploits players through rigging everything from the on-court gameplay to traversal from quest to quest to encourage additional spending despite already having collected the cost of a full priced game up front (plus that sweet State Farm money). While several of the changes present in this years game are disappointing (including the inexplicable decision to dumb down MyCareer) there are some good things here. Unfortunately (to paraphrase Ralph Waldo Emerson, a first I believe for this site) the ever-present feeling that I’m being milked for every dime I can spare speaks so loudly, I cannot hear what any of the improvements say. | Read review |
