MLB The Show 23 is a superb title that has a great balance of enjoyable gameplay, well-researched and deeply educational story elements
MLB The Show 23 moves the franchise forward in several ways. The Negro Leagues storyline shines bright as the best addition we’ve seen in the series. While San Diego Studios didn’t pitch a perfect game, they delivered a game worthy of being called The Show
I am almost 50 years old now. I was once the daily newspaper reporter for Cooperstown itself. Buddy, I chewed tobacco when I played T-ball, and I am bonded to baseball through my father and friendships going back to kindergarten. Still, MLB The Show 23 found a way to teach me something about the sport, and give me new reason to love it.

---|---|---|---|---|---|
Atomix | Ernesto Olicón | 85 / 100 | 03-27-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is far from a perfect game. Diamond Dynasty is still a pay to win, albeit without so much brazenness; the character models still need a little more work for photorealism, while aspects such as character creation still need more work for a player to take advantage of. However, this is the best installment in the history of an excellent sports franchise. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Kevin Mitchell | 4.5 / 5 stars | 03-28-2023 | MLB The Show 23 will have you practice your best home run calls because the latest installment in the iconic franchise knocks it out of the park. The game’s new storylines mode, improved animations, and latest gameplay changes are worth the price of entry to your favorite ballpark this year. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Aria Pirooz | 8 / 10 | 04-07-2023 | The 2023 version of MLB The Show is by far the best and most visually advanced Baseball simulation on the market, and if you watch or play the sport, there is no harm in giving it a try, although it doesn’t offer much outside of the story mode. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Kyle Foley | 9 / 10 | 04-06-2023 | MLB The Show 23 does enough to revamp an excellent formula, while the Storylines: Negro Leagues mode serves as an important history lesson within the confines of the game. | Read review |
CGMagazine | David Walters | 8 / 10 | 04-02-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is another solid entry to San Diego Studios’ yearly iteration of MLB magnificence. | Read review |
COGconnected | Rhett Waselenchuk | 90 / 100 | 04-01-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is the best-damned sports game money can buy. I think I say this every year, but the fact remains: Sony San Diego provides the most authentic representation of a sport with their MLB The Show series. Just as I did with The Show 22, I’ll be playing this year’s entry right up until next season. Take me out to the ballgame, and don’t ever bring me back. | Read review |
Dexerto | Ryan Lemay | 4 / 5 stars | 03-24-2023 | There is no need to reinvent the wheel when you already have a winning formula. MLB The Show 23 doesn’t stray too far away from what has made the series successful, and that’s a good thing. Sets and Seasons is a bold but welcomed change in Diamond Dynasty, and revamped drafting and scouting was long overdue in Franchise mode. | Read review |
Digital Chumps | Nathaniel Stevens | 8.5 / 10 | 04-10-2023 | While San Diego Studio doesn’t take a huge leap with MLB The Show 23 compared to last year’s game, it’s still entertaining and the best baseball game on the planet. The addition of The Negro Leagues mode makes for a deeper and more enriching experience. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Matt Sainsbury | 2.5 / 5 stars | 03-31-2023 | Fundamentally, though, MLB the Show 23 is a good game. MLB the Show 22 was a good game. Adding the Negro Leagues mode was noble from Sony (and no doubt the kind of goodwill-generating progressive addition that will keep the licensor happy with how Sony is treating the IP). However, the misstep with the World Baseball League and a complete unwillingness to build on any mode but the awful Diamond Dynasty also make this year’s The Show unacceptable. If you missed last year’s iteration, then you can add a couple of stars to this score, because for you, it won’t be one of the most cynical annual iterations that we’ve seen in sports games for quite some time. For the rest of us, though. No. Not good enough. | Read review |
Eurogamer.pt | Bruno Galvão | Not Recommended | 03-29-2023 | MLB: The Show 23 is a game of continuity, with immense inherited from last year’s edition, accompanied by refinements that will be appreciated only by the most dedicated and after long hours on the field. The story mode focused on the Negro Leagues deserves praise and the adjustments made to streamline the gameplay as well, make things better than in last year’s edition, even if everything seems too equal. | Read review |
Everyeye.it | Raffaello Rusconi | 8 / 10 | 04-03-2023 | Despite confirming itself as the best baseball simulation on the planet, MLB The Show 23 continues to manifest the same problem for several years: the graphics sector. | Read review |
Forbes | Brian Mazique | Recommended | 03-28-2023 | In totality, MLB The Show 23 offers a deep baseball simulation with a variety of new features to gameplay, Diamond Dynasty and franchise mode, but almost nothing new in RTTS. | Read review |
Game Informer | Brian Shea | 8.8 / 10 | 04-12-2023 | Real-life Major League Baseball continues to evolve in ways to encourage faster play in hopes of appealing to a broader audience, but MLB The Show 23 feels somehow ahead of the game. At the same time, the new Storylines mode shows the past is just as important as the future, providing players with the best of both worlds. Myriad options and modes allow you to engage with America’s Pastime precisely how you want, and in the process, MLB The Show 23 delivers one of the best baseball games in years. | Read review |
GameSpot | Richard Wakeling | 8 / 10 | 04-03-2023 | By exploring the Negro Leagues and some of its most notable players, MLB The Show 23 shines a spotlight on an important part of baseball and American history. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Matt Bianucci | 8 / 10 | 03-31-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is a continuation of one of the best sports game franchises on the market, and the inclusion of the Negro Leagues Storylines mode makes it an even better way to experience the game and learn about its history even further. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Noah Rigsby | 85 / 100 | 04-07-2023 | MLB The Show 23 moves the franchise forward in several ways. While San Diego Studios didn’t pitch a perfect game, they delivered a game worthy of being called The Show. | Read review |
Geek Culture | Jake Su | 9 / 10 | 04-14-2023 | Another year, another triumph, the consistency of the team at San Diego Studio continues to amaze, and MLB The Show 23 is a true gem of a baseball game. No matter which mode you find yourself in, there’s something to marvel at, and with the big addition of the Negro Leagues mode, this is one baseball sim that is heavy on the history lessons and may yet make history itself as well. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Sean Smith | 8.5 / 10 | 03-27-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is a superb title that has a great balance of enjoyable gameplay, well-researched and deeply educational story elements. | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Cory Wells | 3.5 / 5 stars | 03-27-2023 | While not a lot has changed in terms of ways to play MLB The Show 23, the experience on the field is much improved. | Read review |
IGN | Justin Koreis | 9 / 10 | 03-31-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is a great step forward for the series, thanks in large part to its brilliant new Negro Leagues mode. | Read review |
Lords Of Gaming | Daniel May | 7.5 / 10 | 04-06-2023 | Where last year’s MLB The Show felt too copy-and-pasted, MLB The Show 23 feels legitimately improved. New modes featuring historical and recent stars give a breath of fresh air to this series. Expanding practice types for RTTS players also helps players get meaningful practice to get better at the game. | Read review |
New Game Network | Eric Hall | 83 / 100 | 04-16-2023 | MLB The Show 23 doesn’t reinvent the genre, but the franchise continues to stand as one of the best on the market. The gameplay is fantastic across all phases of the sport, and the line-up of modes has been improved thanks to the addition of Storylines. There is still room for improvement, but The Show remains a contender for best sports title of the year. | Read review |
Nintendo Life | PJ O’Reilly | 7 / 10 | 03-28-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is a better all-round package than last year’s outing, thanks in large part to the new Storylines mode that adds a well-presented and educational history lesson for players to get involved in. In terms of this Switch port, presentation is perfectly acceptable, with the expected graphical downgrades made, but the frame rate can still be troublesome in places, making for play that feels sluggish in comparison to other platforms. This issue aside, though, this is a solid port that brings all the modes found in other versions of the game, making for a decent overall option for MLB fans. | Read review |
NintendoWorldReport | Neal Ronaghan | 9 / 10 | 03-28-2023 | You can get deep into the details with hardcore simulation play, especially with the improved in-game UI that gives you a cleaner readout on the specifics of your pitch or swing. You can also flip the game to casual and just sit back and relax, ripping some dingers and striking some dudes out. Or you can toss out the idea of playing full games and just experience history in the incredible Negro League Storylines mode. Even if the visuals border on being potato quality, this game rocks on Switch. | Read review |
Operation Sports | Kevin Scott | Recommended | 03-31-2023 | We’ll have plenty more deep diving MLB The Show 23 and its various modes in the weeks to come. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Neil Bolt | 8 / 10 | 03-29-2023 | As solid as ever from San Diego Studio, but a few tweaks and a superb Storylines mode make MLB The Show 23 an even more worthwhile purchase than recent editions | Read review |
Polygon | Owen Good | Recommended | 03-29-2023 | I am almost 50 years old now. I was once the daily newspaper reporter for Cooperstown itself. PSX Brasil | Thiago de Alencar Moura | 85 / 100 | 03-30-2023 | Supported by the great new Storylines mode and the already incredibly solid foundation of previous years, MLB The Show 23 is another excellent sports simulator game from the masters of baseball. There were few changes, but the series keeps showing how much it understands the players’ passion for the past, present and future of the sport and brings something capable of satisfying every fan. | Read review |
Push Square | Sammy Barker | 7 / 10 | 03-28-2023 | The excellently executed Negro Leagues are the MVP of MLB The Show 23, adding an educational and entertaining interactive documentary to an already top-tier sports game. Diamond Dynasty sees some of its biggest structural changes yet, and has strengthened its already respectable single player slate with some smart additions to Mini Seasons. Meanwhile, rebalanced fielding and batter/pitcher matchups add more tension to the gameplay, but the graphics are starting to look stale and Road to the Show feels like it’s almost been abandoned at this point. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Matúš Štrba | 8 / 10 | 04-20-2023 | I can recommend MLB The Show 23, but not to everyone. It’s a very good game that even players who aren’t necessarily baseball fans can enjoy. And that’s totally cool. Other sports series should also have such options. However, in terms of content, there are very few changes. The educational story mode in The Negro Leagues is great. Some minor changes in other modes are also nice. But it’s more like an expansion of 22. Even on the technical side and also on the rules side. | Read review |
Shacknews | Donovan Erskine | 8 / 10 | 03-31-2023 | MLB The Show 23 is another solid addition in what is the best annual sports sim franchise. San Diego Studio continues to show a deep knowledge and understanding of baseball and the culture surrounding it. The addition of The Negro Leagues is a massive improvement to the overall product, and the ability to scan your face into Road to the Show is a fun new feature as well. Outside of some minor league woes, MLB The Show is another grand slam. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Nicolò Bicego | 7.3 / 10 | 04-17-2023 | Baseball fans will love it, but the game does nothing special to feel like something new – or next-gen. | Read review |
Sports Gamers Online | Brandon Satterwhite | 8 / 10 | 03-31-2023 | MLB The Show 23 hits a home run in some key areas and in others, not so much. However, while popular modes like Road to The Show are still being neglected, San Diego Studios still manages to improve enough to keep the experience fresh. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Marco Ravetto | 8.5 / 10 | 04-06-2023 | After repeating the same exact gameplay year after year, MLB The Show 23 finally offers some interest-ing new features in an fresh enjoyable experience, both in old and in new game modes. There’s a great atmosphere on the diamond, and there are tons of things to do, games to play, stars to unlock. Some shadows on the online, with a netcode that it’s shaky at times. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Shaun Ranft | 4 / 5 stars | 03-26-2023 | There will always be missteps, but if MLB The Show 23 is any indication, the future of this series looks bright. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Unknown | 8 / 10 | 03-30-2023 | MLB The Show 23 doesn’t revolutionise its core gameplay mechanics, but the new Storylines mode and Diamond Dynasty features really hit the ball out of the park. Exploring the details of the Negro Leagues and some of its key players was captivating, whilst the changes in Diamond Dynasty ensure there’s plenty to keep players invested in the mode for hours on end – even Franchise feels a bit more exciting to play through thanks to its revamped draft system. | Read review |
Wccftech | Nathan Birch | 8 / 10 | 03-28-2023 | The makers of MLB The Show 23 clearly heard the complaints about a lack of fresh features in recent entries, as this year’s game offers up the new exciting and enlightening Storylines mode as well as significant tweaks and improvements to Franchise, March to October, and Diamond Dynasty. A lack of innovation when it comes to core gameplay keeps this year’s title from being a true home run, but it’s at least a strong double. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Jon Hueber | 4.5 / 5 stars | 04-03-2023 | MLB The Show 23 dives deep into its best modes, refreshing the experience with a bevy of new features and tweaks to make the old feel new. The addition of the WBC and the long-awaited inclusion of the Negro Leagues makes this year’s version the best Show to date. | Read review |
