We can say, without a doubt, that F1 23 is once again crowned king in terms of Formula 1 simulation games. After playing with a friend who has never had experience in games of this type, he told me that he felt really comfortable and that he had a great time playing in his casual mode, an experience that I thought could overwhelm him and that ended up being the opposite, a very comfortable, accessible and above all very fun afternoon. The Braking Point 2 mode is a hit, since, apart from pure and hard competition, its objective game system, beyond being among the first, makes the experience very interesting as well as satisfying to play. If we add all this to the drama that the rival protagonists experience behind the scenes in a television documentary plan and the recovery of characters from season 1, the final result is a most interesting cocktail. |

It is a complicated task to implement major novelties in just 12 months, but this time it was noticed that they struggled. We have a more desirable Braking Point 2, an F1 World full of competitions and challenges, and the implementation of the Super License and Tech Level that give the depth that was missing. Those who feared the possibility of this being just a year dedicated to updating the drivers and cars, can rest assured. This season is one of the best of recent times in the universe of virtual Formula 1 racing. |

Far be it to appear crotchety, but F1 23 is yet another yearly Formula One game that sports only incremental improvements, many of which are minor or otherwise injected with travail. Yes, it’s harsh to expect a yearly entry in a sports franchise to totally change the game, but F1 23 could’ve at least conjured up a feature that’d plant a seed for something extraordinary in future entries. But alas, it’s a mostly-safe F1 game riding on the successes of previous F1 installments. Braking Point 2.0 does offer some solid (if sometimes cringe-inducing) drama, the driving mechanics and presentation continue to impress, and generally, to an outlier, this is one fabulous F1 game. However, resting on your laurels only gets you so far, and F1 23 has failed to move the needle in regards to making F1 games even more compelling than they already are. By all means, pick up and relish another core EA and Codemasters F1 outing, but it’s time the series stopped playing it safe and gave us something audaciously new. |

For fans of the F1 series, this all comes down to one question, and it’s the same one asked last year: Is it worth picking up F1 23 if you already have last year’s title? In my opinion, the F1 World mode and the improved vehicle physics are noteworthy upgrades and feel more than what could realistically have been DLC or a patch for the previous title. The improvements for controller users are especially noticeable, and I suspect that most people playing F1 23 are indeed using that control scheme. When you combine all of that and consider the continuation and improvements made to Breaking Point, it’s pretty easy to recommend picking up F1 23. |
