Another classic action game from Platinum that’s so full of ideas it seems fit to burst and yet everything not only works perfectly but is filled with an infectious sense of goofy fun.
Astral Chain is a unique and beautiful game that excels at what it’s trying to do. It’s one of the best games of the year so far, and it makes me excited to see what the studio will come up with next.
Astral Chain is a brilliant action adventure game, with everything you could expect from a PlatinumGames title: fast and deep combat, rich visuals and a surprising story that reminds us of Nier Automata.

COGconnected | Stephan Adamus | 91 / 100 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain is an excellent action game that uses the Switch’s unique hardware in creative ways. Critical Hit | Alessandro Barbosa | 8 / 10 | 08-27-2019 | Astral Chain is one of Platinum Games' most complex and satisfying action games to date, with combat that's suitably fast but far more purposeful and careful in execution. Its gorgeous world and enticing premise are betrayed by an uninteresting story and characters, but there's little else to fault when you're teaming up with your legions and solving cases across different dimensions. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Renan Fontes | 10 / 10 | 09-04-2019 | Home to an incredibly immersive world and the best combat on the Nintendo Switch, Astral Chain is a must-play not only for fans of the genre, but the medium as a whole. It is a title that understands the importance of balancing gameplay, story, and style without ever sacrificing substance for anything else. It's more accessible than most PlatinumGames titles without ever having to compromise its core mechanics. The slower start may alienate potential fans but sticking with Astral Chain leads to a surprisingly thematic script, incredibly deep combat, and what might be Platinum's best game to date. | Read review |

Destructoid | Chris Carter | 9 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Whatever criticism you can throw at Astral Chain, you can't say it isn't unique. In the first few hours, I was all over the place when it came to an assessment, as it can take some time to really turn it up. But when it does it just clicks, and I don't want to stop playing it. | Read review |
Digital Chumps | Eric Layman | 8.5 / 10 | 07-22-2017 | Astral Chain is the latest and most accomplished model of PlatinumGames' ability to combine stylish action with player agency and accessibility. Exhausted storytelling and haphazard platforming also continue to underline their limitations. If Nier: Automata sought balance between power and ambience, Astral Chain finds power in power. It's a pure, grandiose spectacle. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Matt Sainsbury | 4 / 5 stars | 08-27-2019 | Astral Chain is both beautiful and mesmerising. You’re not likely to come across a better action gameplay system for quite some time – likely until PlatinumGames’ own next effort. Truly this is a developer that understands the principles of movement in action better than any, and while its games might struggle in other areas to meet the brilliance of the action, every second with that action is satisfying, exciting, and a very pure form of entertainment. | Read review |

EGM | Reid McCarter | 8 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain is loud, brash, exciting, and, in the end, a warning about the dangers of unquestioned loyalty. Its hyperkinetic action sequences and colorful characters might make the game seem like it isn't interested in offering more than intricately designed fights and a straightforward genre story, but stick around for its entirety and its cast of 2070s police officers show themselves to be more than just cartoon cut-outs of sci-fi cops. | Read review |
Eurogamer | Martin Robinson | Recommended | 08-26-2019 | Sprawling, varied and constantly stylish, Astral Chain is a very different breed of action game that ranks with Platinum's best. | Read review |

FNintendo | Nuno Nêveda | 9 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain may be a game that combines action and RPG elements in an excellent way but merely stating this would be a serious understatement. Nearly everything in Astral Chain drips with quality, labour and dedication, from its intense and frantic combats to the exquisite art style and wonderful soundtrack, this is without any doubt the finest new IP to reach the Nintendo Switch and another reminder of why Platinum Games deserves all the praise it can get. | Read review |

Gameblog | Filipe Da Silva Barbosa | 8 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Occuring in a beautiful anime setting, Astral Chain is a real treat for the players. The gameplay mechanics, focused on the link between the main character and its Legions, are really engaging, but only in solo mode unfortunately. With this game, PlatinumGames confirm their status as masters in Beat'em all games making. | Read review |
GameGrin | Francis Kenna | 8 / 10 | 09-16-2019 | As it is now, Astral Chain is a great action game with a few blemishes. It might not be perfect, but it should be a high priority for any Switch owners, and fans of the action genre as a whole. | Read review |
GameMAG | Unknown | 9 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain is an another victory of PlatinumGames, which did not copy the usual formula of Devil May Cry and tried to do something new. It is not just what the fans were waiting for, it is even more than that. | Read review |
Gameplanet | Billy Atman | 9 / 10 | 08-29-2019 | Astral Chain is one of the most exciting new IPs I've played in years. From its stunning combat design to its gorgeous visuals, it packs a punch in almost every area. Combat feels incredible and the Legions add a huge amount of options to how you tackle any given battle. Some may fault the game for its more quiet moments and investigations, but the contrast they offer to the frantic action, feels near-perfect in its execution. | Read review |

INDIANTVCZ | Patrik Strnad | 9 / 10 | 08-29-2019 | PlatinumGames certainly did not disappoint. Almost all the course of the game I could not get bored, because activities lurked all the time. One of the few things that is a bit annoying on the game is the fact that the chapter can't be played 100% right away, because often there are activities requiring a Legion you don't already have. You must then go back in future chapters to complete these activities. The length of each chapter and the overall storyline also seemed great to me, and I had finished in about 18 hours. For a great combination of catchy story, amazing stylization and heaps of fun fighting, I'll give solid recommendation 9 out of 10. | Read review |
Just Push Start | Dominic Weakland | 4.1 / 5 stars | 09-05-2019 | Astral Chain is weird, thrilling, unique, different and crazy, it's just held back by bad choices. Some of the design elements take a lot of getting use to and make sense in the long run, but can be frustrating to beginners. Combine this with entirely too many things going on at once and some of the most boring scenes between action packed combat sequences and you have an experience that loses a bit too much between scenes. This isn't enough to take away from Astral Chain, it just turns a title that could've been among the best games this year to something that is still among the best on the Switch. | Read review |
JVL | Cloud | 8 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Far from being a little game while waiting for the main course, the new license for Platinum Games has a universe and original gameplay mechanics that we only ask to see again in another episode more balanced in its structure. | Read review |

LevelUp | Pedro Pérez Cesari | 8.8 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | So, it goes without saying that I recommend Astral Chain to all fans of PlatinumGames' work since it takes everything that makes most of their games special but adds a unique flavor that will remind you why it is such a beloved studio. Also, I consider it an appropriate title for the owners of a Switch who are in search of something frantic and novel. | Read review |

Nintendo Wire | Ricky Berg | 8.5 / 10 | 09-14-2019 | While it falls into some trappings both general and unique, its inspired design choices in combat and the wealth of customization it provides makes the game stand out even amongst other Nintendo published titles. It can be intimidating at times, but Astral Chain is a game anyone with a Switch should be investigating for themselves. | Read review |
NintendoWorldReport | John Rairdin | 8.5 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Given your character's role as a police officer, I found the gradual de-emphasizing of the investigation mechanics to be a tad disappointing. A few areas of the visual design could also use work, but they'll hardly affect enjoyment of the game. Ultimately, what we're left with is one of the most exciting and original action games on Switch, if not the most. | Read review |
NoobFeed | Adam Siddiqui | 90 / 100 | 09-06-2019 | Astral Chain constantly moves forward and builds momentum for an explosive end. As part of an elite law enforcement unit known as Neuron, it's your job to fight the most deadly monsters humanity has ever encountered with tools only a handful of people have access to. Without a doubt, Astral Chain is one of PlatinumGames best work and one of the top exclusives for the Nintendo Switch. An outstanding story that constantly ramps up with bigger and more dangerous threat with a constant stream of new and deadly enemies within a beautifully decorated world. It's only when the developers attempt to go outside those strong mechanics and try something different that Astral Chain fumbles. | Read review |

Press Start | James Berich | 8 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain is a unique experience from beginning to end, but some strange choices in the way it tells its story and major pacing issues in the third act bring it down. Regardless, Astral Chain fits right in amongst the Platinum greats, offering a fun and unique battle system that does a fantastic job at differentiating itself from its contemporaries. | Read review |
Reno Gazette-Journal | Jason Hidalgo | 9 / 10 | 11-08-2019 | Astral Chain is everything that’s right about Platinum, reflecting the fresh, quirky, gunslinging mentality that the studio displays in its best works. Part Bayonetta and part Pokemon with a heavy sprinkling of police sci-fi in between, Astral Chain is a breath of fresh air in an industry typically dominated by sequels and familiar formulas. Free time sections could be a bit more dialed down and the Legion combat can be a handful at times. Overall, though, Astral Chain marks a promising start to what will hopefully be a new franchise. | Read review |

The Games Machine | Stefano Calzati | 8.5 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain is a detective story of the near future, a game with a crazy rhythm and direction. However it is around the gravitational field of his combat system that sensational qualities and unexpected flaws rotate. We're still talking about a memorable, amusing, tachycardic experience, doped by a techno-aesthetic power that flexes Switch's muscles like only Nintendo managed to do. Despite certain flaws endemic to their work (unmanageable camera on all), PlatinumGames confirms itself as the king of stylish action games. | Read review |
The Outerhaven Productions | Todd Black | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-10-2019 | While it may not be for everyone per se, Astral Chain blends a beautiful story and world together with tight action as you fight to save everything from enemies both and far. TheSixthAxis | Dominic Leighton | 8 / 10 | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain boasts the same winning elements of Platinum's finest work – exhilarating combat, characterful visuals, and a compelling story – but it loses a bit of personality. Where Bayonetta and 2B provided an emotional centre point for the fantastical storytelling, Astral Chain's unnecessarily silent protagonist is a charmless creation saved by an utterly charming world. | Read review |
Too Much Gaming | Joseph Choi | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2019 | Astral Chain definitely falls within the higher tiers of Platinum Games’ offerings. USgamer | Julie Muncy | 4 / 5 stars | 08-26-2019 | Astral Chain is the directorial debut of Nier Automata designer Takahisa Taura, and it proves that he's a creator worth paying attention to. Part melodramatic anime, part overly complicated Tamagotchi, it's an eminently playable action role-playing game that delivers the pleasure of good teamwork in a way few singleplayer games accomplish. Building on action design ideas seeded in Nier, Astral Chain encourages you to bond with your beloved pet cybermonster both on and off the battlefield. Then, it teaches you how to fight as one. | Read review |
