Capcom has announced that Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline entry in the iconic survival horror series, will launch on February 27, 2026, for all current-generation platforms, including a day-one release on the Nintendo Switch 2. This marks the first time a new mainline Resident Evil title has launched simultaneously on a Nintendo console since Resident Evil 4 two decades ago.

In an interview at Tokyo Game Show with VGC, director Koshi Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa revealed that native Switch 2 versions of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village will also be released on the same day. This decision allows new players on the platform to experience all three modern mainline entries without delay.

According to the development team, bringing the series to Nintendo’s new hardware was a surprisingly straightforward endeavor.

“When we got the Switch 2 hardware, we were surprised in a good way about how smooth the process was for us to bring the existing development version of the game to that platform,” Kumazawa stated. He explained that after prototyping Village on the new console, the team realized they could launch Requiem simultaneously and decided to “go the whole hog and add in 7” to complete the collection.

The release of Requiem lands just weeks before the franchise’s 30th anniversary in March 2026. However, the developers clarified this was a coincidence resulting from the natural development schedule rather than a deliberate plan.

“Once it did land at the current release date, we felt a certain amount of responsibility or pressure to be the game that brings the series to that anniversary point,” Kumazawa admitted.

The duo also touched upon industry topics like information leaks, with Kumazawa expressing frustration over unconfirmed details being treated as fact by the community. “It becomes a betrayal if it ends up being we didn’t do what we promised, even though we never promised it,” he said.

In a final interesting reveal, Nakanishi noted that a character—Lucas Baker’s girlfriend—was cut from Resident Evil 7 due to development constraints. He expressed a desire to potentially add her back in a future “Director’s Cut” or remake of the game.
