Being an angry werewolf is fun for a while, but behind the bloody carnage lies a dated and heavily repetitive stealth adventure.

Critic Reviews for Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood
Reviews
Chris Moyse (Destructoid)
5/10
“Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood proudly wears the reverence for White Wolf’s lore on its furry sleeve, with a dark-but-interesting universe and a fierce pro-environment/anti-capitalist message. But behind its wild, bloody carnage and well-meant intentions lies a dated and sorely repetitive stealth adventure that, among its contemporaries, fails to stand out from the pack.”
Hobby Consolas (Daniel Quesada)
64/100
“It proposes an universe and some attractive ideas, but they are not interesting enough to overlook a crude graphical performance and some really repetitive gameplay mechanics.”
Vikki Blake (Eurogamer)

“Fun at times but also scruffy and repetitive, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood lacks a bit of bite.”

BaziCenter | Omid Sedigh Imani | 3 / 10 | 02-23-2021 | Given how rich World of Darkness universe is, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is nothing but a total disappointment. | Read review |
Bazimag | Ali Rezazadeh | 6 / 10 | 02-08-2021 | It seems that Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood had some very nice ideas under its hood but they just haven’t come together as good as they should in the final product. Although the combat has its moments and the world building is quite intriguing, at the end of the day it’s just a cycle of repetitive and banal moments. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Jake Yoder | 4 / 10 | 02-11-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood had a lot of potential. The World of Darkness universe is clearly full of interesting lore, creatures and characters, so it’s a shame that the game drops the ball so hard. While some players may find some surface-level enjoyment in the game’s stealth and combat, the lack of depth or player growth makes them feel old fast. Even if you are a World of Darkness superfan, it’s probably best to skip Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood, at least until it’s heavily discounted. | Read review |
Chalgyr’s Game Room | Nick Herber | 6 / 10 | 02-08-2021 | There is a lot of potential in Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood, I just wish more of it had been fully realized. There are moments of excitement to be had, especially in the game’s earlier hours as you take on your werewolf form and lay waste to your opponents. However, the combat and many of the environments become repetitive relatively quick. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Taylor King | 4 / 10 | 02-09-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood seemingly tries to bite off more than it can chew. As cheesy as that sentence sounds, it certainly meets that description. There are moments that stand out amongst the mediocrity of it all, that elevate the overall experience, but it’s not enough to justify playing it solely for those moments. The main “selling point” for the game being the ultra-violent combat could actually be its weakest element. So much so that the added inclusion of stealth mechanics is preferable to the main attraction. And it’s this secondary gameplay loop that is left feeling shallow and easily manipulated because of this split focus. Within the stealth systems, there is the potential of something interesting when mixed together with in-universe powers, but the current execution failed to capture the full fantasy. | Read review |

COGconnected | Lou Sytsma | 80 / 100 | 02-01-2021 | Cyanide Studios have proven their mettle with previous games in the supernatural genre. Their previous efforts include Styx: Shards of Darkness and the Call of Cthulhu. Both games were well received. Earthblood is a solid effort that should get werewolf fans howling with glee. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 5 / 10 | 02-08-2021 | Fascinating for 15 minutes and boring for ten hours, you’ll be howling with frustration at this missed opportunity for full moon madness in Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood. | Read review |
Cultured Vultures | Nathan Gibson | 3 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood has a lot of interesting ideas, but the boring and repetitive gameplay and lack of compelling story mean it fails to make a lasting impression. | Read review |
Daily Mirror | JC Suttun | 2 / 5 stars | 02-11-2021 | WTAE is a prime example of the latter. With its phoned-in stealth, mediocre combat, poor storytelling and rough presentation, calling it a missed opportunity is an understatement, especially on a new generation console. Even die-hard fans of the tabletop game will likely struggle to enjoy this take on the franchise. There’s a blueprint here for an interesting concept, but sadly nothing more. | Read review |

Darkstation | Lee Mehr | 3 / 5 stars | 03-12-2021 | All in all, Earthblood is a promising assortment of competent and mismanaged concepts. Yet even with several annoyances and late-game repetition, there’s no silver bullet taken against my primal enjoyment. | Read review |

Digital Chumps | Alex Tudor | 4 / 10 | 04-02-2017 | Playing as a Werewolf should be fun and exciting, simple as that. Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood doesn’t come close to offering that. Between the dull and laborious Human and Wolf gameplay and the lackluster Werewolf gameplay, it’s difficult to recommend Earthblood to anyone. Above story and visuals, gameplay for this type of game should be king. Instead, Werewolf: The Apocalypse | Read review |

FingerGuns | Sean Davies | 8 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | One of the best AA games to release in quite some time, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood combines brutal combat, smart stealth and a well-developed lore into a 20 hour long action adventure campaign. It can get a little repetitive before the midpoint but there’s some excellent moments waiting for those that can push through to the end. | Read review |

GameCrate | Justin Woo | 5.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | In a world where you can pick up The Last of Us Remastered for a song, there’s no reason to waste your time on Earthblood. GameGrin | Jamie Davies | 6.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | A fun but incredibly flawed hybrid of stealth and hack-and-slash which plays like something dug out from the bargain bin of 2009. | Read review |
GameMAG | Unknown | 5 / 10 | 03-13-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is a low-budget effort with a cool looking blood effects, but not much else. So don’t expect anything good from the visuals or the overall narrative. | Read review |
Gamers Heroes | Blaine Smith | 7 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse Earthblood is an old-school action game launching in a very modern arena. Its simplicity in design may not appeal to everyone, but for those looking for a basic stealth and combat action-adventure, there’s a lot to love about the latest dive into the World of Darkness. | Read review |
GamesBeat | Jason Wilson | 30 / 100 | 02-04-2021 | When I think of games from Spiders, Cyanide, Piranha Bytes, or Reality Pump, I appreciate how often ambition overcomes limited resources. Their games (such as Gothic, Two Worlds, Greedfall, Of Orcs & Men) may have glitches and fall short of triple-A standards, but they tend to be fun, have good stories, and mechanics and systems that I enjoy interacting with. Werewolf: The Apocalypse has most of these. I enjoyed taking on an evil corporation, learning more about how the Garou fit into The World of Darkness, and tearing my foes about. I won’t hide from that. | Read review |
GameSkinny | Jason D’Aprile | 4 / 10 | 02-03-2021 | As if suffering from some bizarre form of virtual Stockholm Syndrome, I felt nearly compelled to see Earthblood through. The game ended up more entertaining because of the barebones effort put into it, resulting in humorous bugs, glitches, and just plain nonsense. | Read review |
GameSpace | Ed Orr | 7 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Despite Earthblood’s roughshot ride over opportunities to dive deep into the lore of Werewolf: the Apocalypse, the focused exploration of this end of the World Of Darkness manages to deliver a bloody good time when the claws come out. It’s just a shame that some of the loftier ideas are let down by repetitive stealth gameplay and poorly developed mechanics. | Read review |
GameSpew | Richard Seagrave | 6 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | The power you feel upon becoming a half-man, half-wolf monstrosity in Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is its saving grace. There’s nothing else out there that offers a similar experience. Sure, it gets a bit repetitive, but you’re a freaking werewolf, capable of picking up a grown man and ripping his head clean off. Boss fights are a highlight, too, actually putting your combat skills to the test, unlike the majority of battles where soldiers are thrown into the arena like lambs to the slaughter. Like its protagonist, Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood has many sides to it that are all rough around the edges, but it’s not totally devoid of charm. | Read review |
GameWatcher | Renata Mojola | 6.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Good voice acting and cool, bloody werewolf fighting sequences could not fully save the rushed story and flat facial animations of this one-dimensional take on the rich World of Darkness universe. | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Randy Kalista | 6.5 / 10 | 02-05-2021 | Werewolf is firing on all cylinders when it lets you take on a wave of enemies, turning them all into puddles of jam. You don’t have to think too much about the gameplay, and that gradually becomes a good thing. If this came out 10 years ago, I’d be thinking about it more during end-of-the-year talks. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Matt Bianucci | 4 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood feels like an expansion on a single, promising idea whose repetitive combat, underwhelming presentation, and confused story take away from what makes the original idea interesting. | Read review |

GBAtemp | Jordan Ryan | 4.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | My second foray into the World of Darkness franchise unfortunately has left me wanting for more. There’s definitely some fun to be had here, but the majority of the game manages to just feel dated and lazy, which makes even the most fun aspects get old before too long. GotGame | Brian Zuhl | 6 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | One of the main appeals of Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is simply playing as a werewolf. It succeeds at this goal, but fails at almost everything else. If you enjoy the idea of rampaging through enemies as a werewolf, then this is the game for you. For those that are seeking a bit more in their games, then this is an easy pass. | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Jordan Helm | 2 / 5 stars | 02-04-2021 | In a game that bills itself as a choice between stealth and combat, it doesn’t take long for the deceit to reveal itself and you realize this is ill-suited and insufficiently-handled for either one of the two gameplay styles. | Read review |
Hey Poor Player | Francis DiPersio | 2.5 / 5 stars | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood isn’t a terrible game, but it’s most likely not one that’s going to stick with you long after the credits roll. It’s mindless and repetitive, but if you’re a fan of World of Darkness and feel like channeling your inner wolfman for the weekend, it just might scratch that primal itch. However, if you’re on the hunt for an action-RPG with some meat on its bones, you’re much better off sinking your claws into something else. | Read review |

IGN Middle East | Mohamed Shorby | 3 / 10 | 02-05-2021 | Despite what seemed like a good story at first and the interesting idea of playing with an angry werewolf, Werewolf: The Apocalypse Earthblood failed to use that idea properly as it didn’t build on it in any way with the rest of the game’s elements, the overall story and gameplay experience became very disappointing very fast. | Read review |

INDIANTVCZ | Stanislav Franc | 4 / 10 | 03-11-2021 | B-story, bad characters, boring combat system. A completely repetitive system of quests where you always do the same thing. The game contains several bugs, getting stuck in the wall, soldiers walking into the wall. Boring combat system and stealth. Graphics both from PS3. In short, a title that might have worked maybe 10 years ago. | Read review |
KeenGamer | Adam Conner | 5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Cyanide are one of the biggest players in the AA video game space. Releasing some relatively popular franchises like Blood Bowl and Styx, they have been around for quite some time now. Playing as a werewolf in video games is quite uncommon, but does the studio have enough to create an interesting gameplay loop? | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | Unknown | 3 / 10 | 02-05-2021 | Playing as a powerful, rage-filled werewolf should be the perfect set-up for a great video game but Earthblood misses so many obvious opportunities it’s as if the game itself is cursed. | Read review |
MMORPG.com | Robert Baddeley | 6.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | So is it the perfect game? No, unfortunately, it is not. Player2.net.au | Matt Hewson | Recommended | 02-04-2021 | A big bowl of comfort food gaming, Werewolf is a game that feels like a throwback to simpler times. It is a welcome blast from start to finish and while ultimately forgettable, it is undeniably fun while it lasts. | Read review |
PlayStation LifeStyle | Paulmichael Contreras | 5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood has a good premise, but suffers from poor execution. If you’re looking for a game that allows you to live out the fantasy of being an overpowered werewolf and kill everyone around you in bloody fashion, Werewolf provides that, but only just. Unrewarding combat, dumber-than-a-doorknob AI, dated mechanics, and an uninspiring presentation mean that this is a tough recommendation at the launch MSRP of $49.99 US. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | John-Paul Jones | 7 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Absolutely dated in so many ways with crusty stealth gameplay, poor visuals and uninspiring environments, yet showing glimmers of innovation that are in turn bolstered by bouts of super satisfying werewolf combat, Werewolf: The Apocalypse | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Paulo Roberto Montanaro | 65 / 100 | 02-12-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is fun when we ignore some of its most severe limitations. It’s a good mix between stealth and hack n ‘slash action with a somewhat one-dimensional protagonist as in a good action movie from the 90s, but that at the same time begins to build an interesting universe full of possibilities. | Read review |

Rapid Reviews UK | Shaun Hughes | 2.5 / 5 stars | 02-19-2021 | Wolf. Crinos. Human. Three forms that render the moment-to-moment gameplay of Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood as unique as it comes. When you aren’t sneaking around in the shadows in Cahal’s wolf form, you are shapeshifting into a human to snap necks or transitioning into a Crinos to wreak havoc on the environment and your enemies. It’s fascinating, yet oh-so-flawed. | Read review |
Rectify Gaming | Unknown | 7.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | If you are looking for a game that brings you back to a simpler generation of games, or you want to be a Werewolf for a few hours, this game is absolutely made for you. | Read review |
Rely On Horror | October Keegan | 3.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Ultimately, all of this pieces together into a very low budget and vapid experience that struggles to move past the very worst of a console generation from over a decade ago. While there are a few things I liked here and there (the design of the local God Cahal communes with, Yfen, is actually amazingly cool looking), but overall you’d be better served playing just about anything else this quarantine season. This game sucks. | Read review |
RPGamer | Zack Webster | 2.5 / 5 stars | 02-04-2021 | Earthblood unfortunately never raises itself above average, ending up as a thoroughly competent beat-’em-up bogged down in less stellar stealth gameplay and rough RPG elements. | Read review |

The Games Machine | Nicolò Paschetto | 5.2 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Whether it’s lack of effort, time or budget, Cyanide Studio does not enough to provide a satisfying combat system, nor an interesting story-telling, nor a decent technical presentation. | Read review |

Twinfinite | Cameron Waldrop | 3 / 5 stars | 02-05-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood starts off on the right note, engaging players with the type of action I imagine werewolf fans will find exciting. It quickly runs out of puff, though, and what excitement there is to be had is spoiled by too much tedium in between. Ultimately, enthusiasts of the Apocalypse TRPG are unlikely to feel satiated by what is a rather shallow video game experience overall, which makes it difficult to recommend to those outside the hardcore fanbase. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Unknown | 6 / 10 | 02-09-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood offers some brutally satisfying combat, but everything else in-between feels a little half-baked. It’s not that any of it is bad, but the stealth mechanics are inconsistently utilised, the level design can lack variety, whilst the visuals feel very dated – especially by PlayStation 5 standards. | Read review |
VGN | Angelo Bianco | 6.5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | It’s hard to recommend it to a player who isn’t a big fan of the board game and fantasy universe he’s drawn from, which is why you’ll do well to shift your attentions elsewhere. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Todd Eggleston | 5 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood comes across like an accidental homage to a time best left to nostalgia. Games back in the PS3 era were excelling despite obvious limitations. This game exists in a time when those limitations are all but removed, yet still feels like it comes up short because while it plays like them, it just wasn’t intentional. | Read review |
Wccftech | Francesco De Meo | 6.3 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is as straightforward as an action-adventure game can be. None of its features are broken, but the shallowness of the entire experience makes it a very hard game to recommend for those who are not into the setting to begin with. It does provide moments of fun here and there, but its linear, derivative experience does not stand out in any way. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Kieran Stockton | 7 / 10 | 02-04-2021 | This third-person action game is a little rough around the edges and tries a little too hard to be serious, but its premise and combat is compelling enough to get the job done | Read review |
Worth Playing | Redmond Carolipio | 4.9 / 10 | 03-05-2021 | I could delve into more, but I’d just be filling space at this point. I did have some nuggets of fun with Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood, but there’s too much I can’t ignore to recommend it to anyone, especially with the dawn of next-gen systems and titles that execute their concepts much better and simply look like what current games should be. | Read review |
Xbox Achievements | Matt Lorrigan | 55 / 100 | 02-04-2121 | All of this is to say that, if you’d told me that Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood was a modern remaster of an old Xbox or PS2 game, I’d have believed you. It feels like a relic of an era that has long been left behind, and doesn’t even live up to the standards of many classic titles from that time. From a pure gameplay perspective, it isn’t terrible, but often suffers from simply being boring and repetitive. When this is compounded with its significant presentational issues and lacklustre storytelling, it all just ends up a bit of a howling mess. | Read review |
ZTGD | Ken McKown | 5.5 / 10 | 02-10-2021 | Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood is a long name for a short, uninspired game. I was really hoping this would be a hidden gem that managed to rekindle my love of b-tier titles. Instead it just feels generic in every sense of the word. The combat is its only saving grace, and that cannot carry the game. | Read review |
