Reviews
GameCentral (Metro GameCentral)
7/10
“Adding a true open world to the Monster Hunter formula works just as well as you’d expect, even if this sequel is still a long way from perfecting the concept.”
Red Veron (Destructoid)
9/10
“Toukiden 2 is a great leap towards a much needed evolution, it dares to add new things and challenge tradition. Hunting games usually get an enhanced edition that adds all kinds of stuff and I eagerly await what Omega Force will bring on next time around. In the mean time, I’m gonna play more of this game for few more dozen hours.”
Jose Belmonte (Attack of the Fanboy)
4.5/5 stars
“Toukiden 2 elevates the series with new gameplay features and an open-world setting that makes the game feel more cohesive and different to other titles in the genre. It manages to keep intact the best traits of its predecessors like an interesting lore, well-defined characters and a complex battle system, while also adding elements that improve the overall result. However, the lackluster graphics will reduce its mainstream appeal.”

Atomix | Emilio Reyes | 80 / 100 | 03-24-2017 | Toukiden 2 works very well as a sequel with the new open world that offer us a better approximation to the missions and the demon hand that gives us more options on its combat system. Although the game is not perfect, could be a good choice for the hunting action RPG lovers. | Read review |

CGMagazine | Phil Brown | 7 / 10 | 03-27-2017 | Toukiden 2 make for a fine addition to the Action/JRPG genre, bringing a lot of new ideas to the table but not without its minor frustrations. | Read review |
Chalgyr’s Game Room | Pierre-Yves Lanthier | 8.8 / 10 | 04-05-2017 | The original Toukiden took the Monster Hunter idea and put a classic feudal Japanese spin on it. Having originally released for the Vita it wasn’t long before it saw both PS4 and the PC releases after having found success as a “Monster Hunter Clone”. That simple status however is now no longer valid, as Toukiden 2 just set a new bar for the series with an open world that fans of the genre have only dreamed of. | Read review |
COGconnected | Judi Azmand | 82 / 100 | 03-20-2017 | Toukiden 2 is packed with new concepts, battle mechanics, an open-world and an evolved application of previously existing elements that both fans and newcomers to the franchise will be spoiled with and enjoy. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Eric | 7 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 has a rough start, but manages to pick it up and be a solid member of the monster hunting community. It will manage to hook you in, with its engaging world and simple crafting system. Unfortunately, it might lose you to the weird and often dense AI, and the unimpressive story. | Read review |
DarkZero | Dominic Sheard | 7 / 10 | 04-03-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a packed title that sacrifices complex depth, but in exchange continues to offer people a faster, more easy to understand hunting game for anyone who does not gel with the methodical style of Monster Hunter, while also bringing a fun single player story. | Read review |
Destructoid | Red Veron | 9 / 10 | 03-30-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a great leap towards a much needed evolution, it dares to add new things and challenge tradition. Hunting games usually get an enhanced edition that adds all kinds of stuff and I eagerly await what Omega Force will bring on next time around. In the mean time, I’m gonna play more of this game for few more dozen hours. | Read review |
Digital Chumps | Steven McGehee | 8.3 / 10 | 12-22-2016 | As a third person monster hunter with JRPG elements, Toukiden 2 gets a lot right. It has some important limitations that you should consider before diving in, but if you enjoy the franchise or the monster-hunter genre, keeps this one in mind. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Matt Sainsbury | 4.5 / 5 stars | 03-21-2017 | What I got was a game filled with storytelling (I can’t emphasise enough just how many cut scenes Toukiden 2 has), and with a huge shift to open world design. In fact, where the first Toukiden was very solidly in the Monster Hunter tradition, this one edges that much closer to a hybrid JRPG/ Monster Hunter experience, and I couldn’t be happier about that. This is exactly what I want from a “Monster Hunter clone.” | Read review |
DualShockers | Azario Lopez | 9 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 shows that an already impressive series can be made even better by taking chances on new systems. The story stays in scope of the premise throughout the game even after accepting multiple side-quests, theres always clear knowledge of what to do next. Although the open world map by intimidating to some, the game offers easy quick traveling options to seamlessly get players from one place to another. After playing the game for well over 30 hours, I feel like I can continue playing for another 100 and with that I happily say, “Bring it on!” | Read review |
Everyeye.it | Matteo Mangoni | 7.6 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 is more than just a hunting game: it’s an action-rpg with a solid single-player campaign and an enormous number of monsters to hunt. | Read review |
Game Revolution | Griffin Vacheron | 3 / 5 stars | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 is without question a fun game, but so is Dynasty Warriors. My ultimate takeaway is that Omega Force has touched on some pleasant RPG charm and exploration of world and character here, but perhaps hasn’t gone far enough; instead, the game flirts with such elements before falling back on familiarity. | Read review |
Gameblog | Jonathan Bushle | 8 / 10 | 03-22-2017 | Toukiden 2 keeps the solid fighting and RPG mecanics of the previous titles, and add a surpising and fun open world dimension. | Read review |
Gamer Escape | Josh McGrath | 7 / 10 | 04-07-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a title that appeals greatly to fans of the genre. If you’re already into hunting RPGs, you don’t want to miss this one. If you’ve never dabbled, I’d say this is a great place to start. If you’re a gamer like me, though, who’s less into open worlds and more into plot focus, this may not be the title for you. | Read review |
GameSkinny | Jeffrey Rousseau | 8 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | When you need to slay…demons If you need a monster hunting game look no further than Toukiden 2 | Read review |
GameSpew | Matt Eakins | 8 / 10 | 03-24-2017 | Toukiden 2 is another solid entry in the series and probably your best bet for a demon-hunting experience on current gen consoles. | Read review |
GameSpot | Heidi Kemps | 7 / 10 | 04-15-2017 | A new kind of Devil Crush. | Read review |
GameWatcher | Josh Brown | 6.5 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 ends up offering something that’s lacking in all departments. There’s too much fluff between the good stuff, but it still offers a somewhat exhilarating experience in short bursts. If you’re looking for a combat-heavy co-op experience on PC, it’s not a bad choice at all | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Nathan Carter | 7.4 / 10 | 04-13-2017 | Toukiden 2 can get repetitive at times with battles that go on way too long but it’s still a fun monster hunting game that fans of that genre should be able to enjoy. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Alex Jackson | 8 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 takes a core from Kiwami and makes some subtle changes that develop the whole thing from Monster Hunter clone to something unique in the genre. The new, faster combat is a ton of fun and while cramped controls and limited presentation are there and a bother, they aren’t the end of the world and don’t frequently get in the way of the fun. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Patrick Rost | 65 / 100 | 03-23-2017 | Not unlike the gray pebble on the bed of gaming’s great river, Toukiden 2 does nothing to harm or hinder the flow, but does nothing special to draw anyone in either. Action RPG first and prototype ice skating hack and slash second, Toukiden 2 is as worthy of a look as it is a pass. | Read review |
GearNuke | Danial Arshad Khan | 7.5 / 10 | 03-22-2017 | Toukiden 2 is an open world sequel to the original Toukiden. The game iterates on the monster hunting formula established by its predecessor while offering the players countless hours of fun. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Iwan Lehnert | 6 / 10 | 03-22-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a well-crafted action RPG with plenty to do, but its combat doesn’t quite hit the spot. | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Jason Bohn | 4 / 5 stars | 03-27-2017 | Though the plot opens the door to some compelling storytelling only to trip while walking in, there are so many other reasons to give Toukiden 2 a spin. | Read review |
Hey Poor Player | Bethany Meadows | 4 / 5 stars | 03-21-2017 | Even if you’re new to the series, as I am, you can pick this title up with virtually no barrier to entry and enjoy it fully. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | Hobbyconsolas.com | 86 / 100 | 04-19-2017 | Toukiden 2 manages to get rid of Monster Hunter’s shadow, and finds it’s own style. A style that is a joy to play. | Read review |
IGN Italy | Gianluca Loggia | 5.5 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 could have been a fair game, if only it wasn’t so visually ugly and so absolutely not user friendly. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Carlos G. Gurpegui | 6.5 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a game only suitable for fans of the franchise or lovers of Omega Force. Otherwise you’ll have to make an effort to go through its basic cliché-driven narrative and gameplay. | Read review |
Marooners’ Rock | Alex McCumbers | 8 / 10 | 04-25-2017 | Having the game on PS4 and including multiple ways to play with friends is a huge bonus that makes the game worth picking up for those who want some memorable nights at the couch. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | GameCentral | 7 / 10 | 03-22-2017 | Adding a true open world to the Monster Hunter formula works just as well as you’d expect, even if this sequel is still a long way from perfecting the concept. | Read review |
PlayStation LifeStyle | Tyler Treese | 8 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a huge step up from its predecessor, and is a smart evolution of the gameplay that Monster Hunter fans have come to know. By opting for a more story-focused experience, it manages to forego feeling like a grind, and the open-world aspect allows players to really take in their surroundings. While there are still some shortcomings, such as a sometimes confusing map and lackluster multiplayer, this is an action game that is worth checking out. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Garri Bagdasarov | 7 / 10 | 03-23-2017 | Toukiden 2 is packed with so much content that you can enjoy by yourself or with four other friends. The crafting is simple enough for anyone to get into and taking down a giant Oni can be incredibly satisfying. It’s just a shame that for everything good Toukiden 2 does, there is always something holding it back. | Read review |
PS4Blog.net | the_nmac | 9 / 10 | 04-06-2017 | I said when I started this Toukiden 2 review that I was new to the monster hunting genre. What Toukiden 2 provided was a great way to dive into the experience and learn about the genre. The gameplay loop is the clear driving force of the game, and like others of its type, there is an addictive nature to it. This is a great entry point for people new to the genre, but even experienced players are going to have a blast. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Thiago de Alencar Moura | 80 / 100 | 04-12-2017 | Toukiden 2 takes various steps in the right direction for hunting RPGs, taking them to this generation, keeping it both accessible and challenging at the same time. It’s a game that works perfectly to those that know the genre, as well as those that want to but don’t know where to being. | Read review |
Pure Playstation | Dom O’Leary | 8.5 / 10 | 03-27-2017 | Yes, it’s wholly focused on fighting but it’s a damn fun fight to have. It even manages to throw in a plot that’s not entirely window dressing and look good while doing it. Toukiden 2 won’t appeal to everyone but it does have the potential to resonate with a broad group of players due to its flexible approach to how you play. Fans of action games and action RPGs should definitely give this one a try. It even manages a move to open-world design with grace instead of resulting in a cluttered mess of to-do lists. In short, buy this game if you want to kill demons, a lot of demons. | Read review |
Push Square | Jenny Jones | 8 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Minor annoyances aside, Toukiden 2 has some truly addictive gameplay and tonnes of content to chew through. The game’s dripping with atmosphere and looks great, with plenty of varied, large open world areas to explore. Meanwhile, the battle system is satisfyingly fast paced, and nothing quite compares to the power trip of ripping off the body parts of a giant demon. | Read review |
Reno Gazette-Journal | Jason Hidalgo | 8.5 / 10 | 04-05-2017 | Toukiden 2 steps up big time from its predecessor, featuring a new open world with a fleshed out campaign while throwing in a fun Demon Hand mechanic that makes breaking demon body parts a bonafide hoot. It’s still not enough to dethrone Monster Hunter from the top of its perch for this fan of Capcom’s premier hunting franchise. It’s the closest any Monster Hunter clone has gotten, though, making it my second-favorite series in the hunting genre. | Read review |
Rice Digital | Mitch Jay | 4 / 5 stars | 04-04-2017 | Toukiden 2 is amongst the best in the monster-slaying genre. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Roman Klein | 70 / 100 | 05-07-2017 | Toukiden 2 is a solid hack’n’slash title that will satisfy fans of the genre and won’t bore everyone else. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Gianluca Arena | 8 / 10 | 03-22-2017 | Toukiden 2 is both a solid hunting game and a vast open world, and even if it cannot match the ones from the AAA games seen recently (from Horizon to Breath of the Wild), it has more than enough juice to keep fan busy for at least a couple of weeks. If you liked the previous titles, you’ll find much mor of the same here and a couple of new twists that add to the gameplay. | Read review |
TechRaptor | Andrew Stretch | 7.5 / 10 | 04-13-2017 | There is plenty here to entertain the casual players to the hardcore fans of monster hunting series. With a well built world and story driven characters you’ll always be wanting to fight just one more monster, on your own or with a party of friends. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Jim Hargreaves | 8 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | In short, Toukiden 2 is everything a sequel should be. Instead of lazily expanding on the original game, which would have been so easy to do, Omega Force actually went back to the drawing board, completely reinventing those parts that needed work. By streamlining much of the dull admin and encasing the game in a larger open world, Toukiden 2 manages to break free from the pack. As a result, it’s easily one of the subgenre’s best entries to date and one that, in some ways, is preferable to Monster Hunter. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Chaz Miller | 4 / 5 stars | 03-21-2017 | All around, Toukiden 2 feels like it takes a lot of what made the earlier games feel a bit flat and fixes it up. New features and open-world exploration set it further apart from the Monster Hunter franchise — not because there’s anything wrong with Monster Hunter, of course, but because it’s important for a game to feel like it’s own unique thing. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Daryl Leach | 7.8 / 10 | 03-30-2017 | Gamers who want some demon slaying action will have a lot of fun with Toukiden 2, especially with its wide variety of weapons and great showdowns with the gigantic Oni. Tearing their limbs away is incredibly satisfying too, whilst being able to do it all online with friends will ensure you’re kept hooked to the game for a long time. | Read review |
Video Chums | Mary Billington | 7 / 10 | 04-03-2017 | Toukiden 2 manages to stay interesting by providing a wealth of abilities that can be used in exploration and fighting. | Read review |
Wccftech | Francesco De Meo | 7.8 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | Toukiden 2 improves pretty much on every feature of its predecessors, with an interesting approach to open world gameplay, a good number of customization possibilities, an engaging story featuring a charming cast of characters, and plenty of intense action. Sadly, combat tends to become a bit stale after a while in single player, as good equipment and skills allow players to just mash their way through the hordes of Oni infesting the land. Toukiden 2 is, without a doubt, a quality title and the best entry in the series, but with other recent games delivering better open world design and combat it may be difficult for some to be enthralled by the Omega Force developed game. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Gabs Tanner | 3.5 / 5 stars | 03-28-2017 | Even though Toukiden 2 lacks depth in its combat, the game still manages to provide a story and world that players will enjoy spending time with. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Kieran Stockton | 5 / 10 | 03-21-2017 | A budget action-RPG that is aggressively mediocre in almost every way | Read review |
