The Ascent is a fast-paced twin-stick shooter that is entertaining when everything is working as intended, but bothersome bugs and repetitive and tedious quests damper the experience.

The Ascent’s arcology setting is splendid, if heavily derivative – shame that all you can do here is gun and grind.
A lovingly crafted action RPG with challenging, satisfying gunfights and an extraordinary cyberpunk setting.
The soundtrack is a highlight, with clear inspiration from some of the most iconic sci-fi scores in entertainment

3DNews | Денис Щенников | 8 / 10 | 07-31-2021 | A worthy debut for Neon Giant. The Ascent is not a perfect, but a good game with a good combat system and stunning visual performance. In addition, you can clean up the streets of Sector 13 in the company of friends (both on the Web and locally) | Read review |
ACG | Jeremy Penter | Recommended | 07-29-2021 | 2021's most enjoyable game, that also has atmosphere for days, and out Cyberpunks most any other game in that theme. Twin stick supreme. | Read review |
AusGamers | KostaAndreadis | 6.4 / 10 | 08-11-2021 | From no two dinged up vehicles or future-rubbish bags looking the same to graffiti strewn walls to cracks and seams covering every inch of the future real estate you get to explore. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Milad Taher Nejad | 8 / 10 | 07-30-2021 | Although there are some minor issues here and there, The Ascent's great atmosphere and breathtaking action-packed gameplay are more than enough to convince almost any gamer to give it a try. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Quinn Hiers | 8 / 10 | 08-02-2021 | Overall, The Ascent is a great addition to the cyberpunk genre. The graphics are stunning, the characters and story entertaining, and it’s available right now on Gamepass! | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Omi Koulas | 9 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent proves why the cyberpunk genre is so popular right now. There isn’t anything exactly different or unique about its story, but it perfects the atmosphere with terrific environment art and an otherworldly soundtrack. Combine that with outstanding twin-stick shooter gameplay and elements of wall cover, cool-down management, and role-playing to deepen the experience. Blasting through crews of Rojins with a rocket-firing gun, the Astrosmasher, being among my personal highlights. It may have accessibility and minor performance concerns, but it’s still sensational, action-packed, and so much fun. The Ascent may be the best cyberpunk game in the last year. | Read review |
COGconnected | Mark Steighner | 92 / 100 | 07-29-2021 | Setting aside it coming from such a small team, I think The Ascent is miraculous in a couple of ways. First, the detailed world-building, environmental storytelling, and atmosphere are maybe the best expression of the cyberpunk aesthetic I’ve ever seen in a game. Second, the developers have seemingly cataloged every annoying mechanic in RPGs and action games — from death to rapid travel to inventory management — and found a way to make them less onerous or disappear altogether. The Ascent is not an easy game, either mechanically or thematically, but it is completely engaging if for no other reason than to see into a very convincingly realized future. | Read review |
Destructoid | Dan Roemer | 7 / 10 | 08-04-2021 | Despite my complaints, though, I legitimately love the world Neon Giant has crafted here and would love to see even more of it. There’s loads of potential in this setting for straight-up better stories to be told, and I think The Ascent itself is kept from greatness from a lot of jank, technical issues, and weird design decisions. All that said, I think once I get my hands on a Steam Deck, I’m absolutely going to treat that as an excuse to go back for more. Hopefully, by then, they’ll have a lot of the technical issues addressed. | Read review |

Everyeye.it | Gabriele Laurino | 7.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is an ambitious work, which fascinates with incredible atmospheres and visually breathtaking scenery. Unfortunately, the exceptional production effort made on the sets and modeling of the game world does not hide some problems related to the balance of the gameplay and the quality of the script. | Read review |
Fextralife | Reiku | 8.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | While The Ascent is not going to be the next Diablo nor Path of Exile, it manages to craft an immersive and distinct experience, one that has familiar gameplay, yet a unique design. Whether your exploring Veles alone or with some friends, you won't want to miss out on this one! | Read review |

Gameblog | Unknown | 6 / 10 | 09-05-2021 | The problem with beauty is that it lets us imagine perfection on all levels. And The Ascent, despite a truly sublime setting, is far from meeting all the requirements that would allow it to rise to the level of the most memorable experiences of 2021. In 15-20 hours, we navigate between the happiness of discovering environments that do more than tickle our Cyberpunk fiber, to fight hard but correctly against hordes of enemies and a certain frustration. | Read review |
Gamefa | مصطفی زاهدی | 6.5 / 10 | 08-21-2021 | The Ascent game is fascinating and entertaining, and especially co-op offers a pleasant and memorable experience, but unfortunately the game suffers from many problems large and small. | Read review |

Gamerheadquarters | Jason Stettner | 6.5 / 10 | 08-12-2021 | The Ascent is a technically impressive and rather gorgeous cyberpunk twin stick shooter held back by a number of issues. This includes the basically broken coop, the mind boggling checkpoints and the insane difficulty spikes. | Read review |
Gamers Heroes | Blaine Smith | 8.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent delivers on every promise. The combat is fast-paced, challenging, and explosive. The environment is gorgeous, gritty, and dark. Everything about the cyberpunk theme screams out for attention. If you're a fan of twin-stick style shooters and the thematics of the cyberpunk universe, The Ascent offers an exciting and rewarding adventure that is worth every second. | Read review |
Gamersky | 细拉 | 7.6 / 10 | 08-06-2021 | Many systems that lack depth make it difficult for players to get the pleasure of brushing, while slightly monotonous levels are also easy to play with. | Read review |
GameSpew | Richard Seagrave | 7 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | Fans of twin-stick shooters and action RPGs are likely to get a good amount of fun out of The Ascent, especially if they have the patience to work though some of its issues. The fact that it looks so pretty, at least on Xbox Series X, means that some may find more of a reason to persist with it, too. With its merely passable story and small assortment of gameplay frustrations, however, it’s not quite the game it could have been. It simply feels a bit rough around the edges, though perhaps a patch or two could smooth them off. | Read review |
GameSpot | Justin Clark | 6 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent looks and acts like a video game, but mostly feels like work. | Read review |
GamesRadar+ | Josh West | 2.5 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | While The Ascent is a true visual showcase for the Xbox Series X, it lacks depth and clarity. There's a fun game in here, but it's ultimately overburdened. | Read review |

GamingTrend | Ron Burke | 80 / 100 | 08-02-2021 | Capturing the cyberpunk aesthetic perfectly, The Ascent is a fantastic example of twinstick shooters with a few tricks of its own. Guardian | Tom Regan | 3 / 5 stars | 08-03-2021 | The Ascent is an atmospheric power fantasy, a cinematic cyberpunk escape where you can disengage your brain and indulge in copious virtual violence. Hardcore Gamer | Kyle LeClair | 3 / 5 stars | 08-11-2021 | The cyberpunk world of The Ascent seems dazzling on the surface, but much like your standard cyberpunk world, the grime underneath all of the neon and futuristic landscapes ends up revealing a hefty mess once you go exploring it. | Read review |
Hey Poor Player | Andrew Thornton | 3 / 5 stars | 08-05-2021 | If you’re playing with others, I imagine you’ll have a great time with The Ascent. While it still isn’t anywhere near perfect, the beautiful graphics and solid gunplay should be enough for those who just want something cool to play with their friends. There’s plenty of loot to collect along the way, too, letting you each put your stamp on your character. | Read review |
IGN | Ryan McCaffrey | 7 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | Story isn't its strong suit, but the rest of The Ascent delivers a wonderfully realized cyberpunk world mixed with satisfying twin-stick gunplay to create an enjoyable action-RPG. | Read review |
IGN Italy | Mauro Ferrante | 8.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a true homage to the classic top-down shooter genre that adds some modern features without disrespecting its main inspirations. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Chris O'Connor | 4.5 / 5 stars | 08-09-2021 | For the price it sits at… I think it's a decent purchase. There's a lot to enjoy even just in looking around the world that has been built here, there are plenty of battles to keep you going and there's the story to play through from start to finish. Scratches that neon lit cyberpunk aesthetic itch just right. | Read review |
Marooners' Rock | Jonathan White | 8 / 10 | 08-25-2021 | The Ascent is a very impressive indie game made by a small studio of fewer than 30 people. Neon Giant has created a fantastic isometric shooter that’s just as much fun as the games it painstakingly writes a love letter to. I highly recommend you check out The Ascent as it’s been one of my favorite games so far in 2021. | Read review |
Merlin'in Kazanı | Eren Eroğlu | 72 / 100 | 08-21-2021 | Despite its stylishly designed atmosphere and graphics, The Ascent can distract the player with numerous optimization problems. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | GameCentral | 3 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | A deeply disappointing co-op shooter that squanders its excellent graphics on a bland and repetitive attempt to make a sci-fi Diablo. | Read review |
MMORPG.com | Jason Fanelli | 7 / 10 | 08-11-2021 | The Ascent equally frustrates and impresses me, one moment dropping my jaw with the city's neon-soaked beauty and the next making me clench my fists in anger. Veles is a brutal, unforgiving world, but it's one I enjoyed blasting my way through...when the game was being fair about it. Navigating the menus is a chore, but building a character is fun and the story is interesting enough that I don't mind the technical issues that pop up. It's not a perfect game, but if this is the beginning of a new franchise then it's a solid foundation from which to make its Ascent. | Read review |
MonsterVine | Frank Wood | 2.5 / 5 stars | 08-29-2021 | I bounced so hard off The Ascent that it left a bad taste in my mouth and a wish that it spent another few more months in the oven. | Read review |
New Game Network | Ben Thomas | 71 / 100 | 08-10-2021 | Outstanding cyberpunk visuals and fun top-down shooting make The Ascent worth playing in single-player. But it could have been even better with less tedium, tighter pacing, and fewer bugs. | Read review |
Niche Gamer | Brandon Orselli | 8.5 / 10 | 10-16-2021 | The Ascent manages to create an unbelievably detailed and dirty cyberpunk world for you to explore and find your place in. All the while you’ll unravel cyberpunk-esque corporate schemes. I couldn’t stop playing the game, The Ascent is absolutely dripping with cyberpunk aesthetics and is a true love letter to the genre by clear lovers of cyberpunk fiction. | Read review |
NoesPaisparaFrikis | Oscar Garcia Mompean | 9 / 10 | 08-13-2021 | it is only one step away from becoming one of those games that mark a generation. | Read review |
Noisy Pixel | Henry Yu | 5.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | In theory, a co-op, loot-based isometric RPG like The Ascent has the potential of being a great cyberpunk-themed experience to play with a group of friends. The world-building is appealing visually and aurally, but it’s ultimately unsatisfying and often unrewarding during exploration. The lack of replayability, broken cooperative play, bugs, and unbalanced artificial enemy difficulty make it tough to appreciate its positive elements. It’s sad to say that The Ascent is another over-hyped cyberpunk game that is all fluff and no substance. | Read review |
Oyungezer Online | Eren Eryürekli | 6.5 / 10 | 09-17-2021 | Considering it is the debut game of a new Indie developer, The Ascent having visuals this good is like a dream come true. Yet if you were to try and explore its depths, you will soon find out it is a pretty shallow game. | Read review |
PC Gamer | Andy Kelly | 84 / 100 | 07-29-2021 | A lovingly crafted action RPG with challenging, satisfying gunfights and an extraordinary cyberpunk setting. | Read review |
PC Invasion | Kevin Foley | 8.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is for the most part a polished experience that's tons of fun to play and behold. The narrative will carry you along to many interesting places with different baddies to fry, though a few encounters feature enemies that are pure bullet sponges. You will need to pick the right equipment and keep up with leveling, but these issues can be overcome. Hardware requirements shouldn't hold you back too much, and glitches are few and far between. The overall quality makes this one a must play for cyberpunk and isometric shooter fans. | Read review |
PCGamesN | Jordan Forward | 7 / 10 | 08-02-2021 | A twin-stick shooter that looks and feels great all the way through, but doesn't do enough new to keep your attention as you invest more time in its RPG systems and world. | Read review |
Polygon | Mike Mahardy | Recommended | 08-10-2021 | One particular mission ended in a robot boss that was resistant to the types of weapons I had spent all of my upgrade materials on thus far. OK, I told myself, that's on me. I should have been prepared. The problem then became finding the requisite components to upgrade an energy weapon I had neglected. In order to do so, I had to slog back through previous environments and take on side quests that ran the gamut of quality: One sent me on a prolonged fetch quest in search of a suitcase, while another tasked me with gathering testicles from slain enemies. One hour and countless frustrations later, I was ready to once again take on that robot boss. | Read review |
Rectify Gaming | Unknown | 9.3 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a love letter to dark, gritty sci-fi that feels like a marriage between Dredd and Syndicate. Dripping with atmosphere and Sweet Justice’s Carptenter-esque score, all backed by intense tactical shootouts and next gen visuals. The Ascent is easily one of this years best games. | Read review |
Saving Content | Scott Ellison II | 5 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | Neon Giant has some minor performance issues to iron out with RTX and DX12. The developers have made a game that’s as complex as you want, but doesn’t overcomplicate anything. Every system has a purpose, and is a weapon of opportunity for you to overcome obstacles. I love when the game isn’t having me fight everything in sight, and allowing me to take in the world. No game has made me want DLC or more content than The Ascent has. Simply put, The Ascent is a brilliant game, that absolutely lives up to the hype. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Nathan Gibson | 3.5 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | Although The Ascent is far from perfect, it gets more right than it does wrong and is most successful at creating a world that is filled with interesting characters and fun to explore. The sections that require some grinding might frustrate, but there is enough variety in the combat to keep the gameplay from becoming stale thanks to the wide array of weapons and the cover mechanics. Add in the possibility for co-op multiplayer with some friends and The Ascent can certainly provide hours of riotous fun, especially with a release on Xbox Game Pass day one. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Matúš Štrba | 8 / 10 | 08-04-2021 | The Ascent is a fun action-RPG hybrid set in a beautifully crafted cyberpunk world. | Read review |
Shacknews | Donovan Erskine | 9 / 10 | 08-12-2021 | The Ascent succeeds at delivering an action-shooter with challenging enemies and a diverse set of levels to explore. This is bolstered by a rich universe that’s practically bursting with interesting lore at every seam. Despite some wonkiness with the in-game map layout, it’s a quite enjoyable experience, especially if you decide to go online and team up with friends. The Ascent is a vastly impressive first outing for Neon Giant, and one that sets the bar high for the studio’s future endeavors. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | Lexuzze Tablante | 6.5 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | There’s just a lot of technical restraints that drag The Ascent down, and I do praise Neon Giant’s hard work they’ve put into the game, but it’s difficult for me to recommend a title that’s so unpolished when you want to play the game on couch co-op. However, if you’re up for instant, fluid twin-stick shooting gunplay with easy-to-grasp mechanics and a massive arsenal of weapons, and a game that accurately evokes the cyberpunk theme then The Ascent is undoubtedly a game that may be worth your time regardless of the technical issues it has. | Read review |

Slant Magazine | Aaron Riccio | 3.5 / 5 stars | 07-30-2021 | The Ascent’s savviest move is making the arcology its main character. Trains run on their own schedules, NPCs carry on conversations whether you stop to listen to them or not, and there’s no exposition for concepts like “Escher loops” and “the First Law.” You’re not a hero, only a replaceable employee. The commune of off-the-grid coders aren’t relying on you, and there’s nothing you can do to help a traumatized recent arrival who woke to find that his family of 70 years was merely a cryosleep-induced dream. And so you look, listen, and empathize with the concerns of this vibrant, lived-in arcology. It’s a terrible place to live, and a terrifyingly believable premonition of where we might end up, but a wonderful one to get lost in. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Denis Burčík | 85 / 100 | 07-29-2021 | Whether you will explore it alone or with friends, Veles is incredibly immersive. The Ascent is an incredible audiovisual achievement that is not without issues, but they are not as big as to be unforgivable. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Unknown | 7.2 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascenti constantly reminds you of being an indie game, having both ambitious ideas you won't find in your typical AAA blockbuster and a not so brilliant execution. Despite the missed opportunities, it still is a fascinating universe and an enjoyable isometric shooter RPG. | Read review |

The Games Machine | Daniele Dolce | 8.4 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a fast-paced twin-stick shooter immersed in an impeccably designed cyberpunk world, yet its plot fails to fully take advantage of this wonderful setting. Luckily, the shooting mechanics are quite satisfying, while the many different character customization options guarantee a fair range of approaches to the shootouts. There are also a bunch of technical issues that can be easily circumvented, but are still annoying. | Read review |
The Outerhaven Productions | Kyle Simcox | 4 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | Despite a few small issues, The Ascent is an incredibly fun twin stick shooter set in a dark, cyberpunk world with a lighthearted cast of characters and plenty of things to do. Neon Giant has a patch based on player feedback planned for mid August so hopefully the small visual and audio bugs will be worked out sooner rather than later. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Nick Petrasiti | 8 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent has got all the grimy character that you would want from its sci-fi cyberpunk setting, and there's a great combat system to go with it. Simply put, The Ascent deserves your attention. | Read review |
TrueAchievements | Luke Albiges | 3 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a beautiful and entertaining action-RPG when everything is working as intended, but those moments are sadly much rarer than they should be. We know the team already has several patches planned so hopefully, a lot of the issues we encountered will be ironed out by the time you dive into the game — I'll be keeping an eye on these updates and will look to update and/or modify this review should things be significantly improved, because I'd have liked to have scored The Ascent higher. Combat is frantic and fun, the world is amazing, and there are some really satisfying abilities to bust out against foes, but you need a hell of a lot of patience to put up with all the technical nonsense going on with the game in its current state. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Chris Jecks | 3 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a tough game to recommend for solo players in its current state. Its buggy, tedious at its best and utterly frustrating at its worst. While I’m sure playing with friends will resolve some of my chief complaints, more fundamental issues like a rather boring overworld can’t be fixed with a few laughs with friends. | Read review |
VG247 | Sherif Saed | Recommended | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent’s ambition is often the most surprising thing about it. I went in expecting a decent, simple cyberpunk top-down shooter. Instead, I got a compelling action game that feels great to play, and an introduction into a world I can’t wait to see expanded in future sequels. The Ascent is the type of indie superstar game you bring up to prove how much can be accomplished by a small team today. | Read review |
Video Games Chronicle | Chris Scullion | 4 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a superb action game that looks as fantastic as it plays. Washington Post | Gene Park | Recommended | 08-04-2021 | The Ascent reminds me of the good old days of Xbox 360 and its robust indie offerings on the old Xbox Live Arcade service, where games like “Shadow Complex” or “Super Meat Boy” were not afraid of making small twists to classic formulas. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Kyle Nicol | 9 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a bloody good time that combines addictive twin-stick shooting, a spectacular cyberpunk world, and a rocking synth soundtrack that elevates every moment to the next level. We Got This Covered | Josh Nichols | 4 / 5 stars | 08-06-2021 | The Ascent is an essential experience for anyone that enjoys tight action-RPG combat or beautiful, neon-colored Blade Runner skylines. WellPlayed | Kieran Stockton | 7 / 10 | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent nails the cyberpunk aesthetic but doesn't really attempt to capitalise on its themes of corporate slavery. The solid audiovisuals and competent action-RPG twin-stick shooter hybrid gameplay manage to glue the experience together, even when glaring flaws such as lacklustre quest design and an overreliance on backtracking threaten to derail it. | Read review |
Windows Central | Jez Corden | 3.5 / 5 stars | 07-29-2021 | The Ascent is a solid evolution of the twin-stick formula, offering some of the most detailed and impressive visuals the gen has to offer so far. I hope they continue to clean up the bugs over time, but for now it is easily one of my favorite experiences of the Summer. | Read review |
