Super Mario 3D All-Stars accomplishes what it sets out to do, charting Mario's evolution to inimitable mascot of 3D platforming, but the collection could stand a few more extras, and Nintendo has not put a lot of effort into updating visuals, controls, and UIs.

“Whether the year it was released has affected the way Super Mario 3D All-Stars came together, we’ll probably never know, but it still comes with a wholehearted recommendation simply due to the quality of the games.”
Sam Loveridge (GamesRadar+)
4/5 stars
“Super Mario 3D All Stars’ package of three of the best 3D Mario games are just enhanced and tweaked enough to be an enjoyable revisiting, but without removing the classic charm.”
Nadia Oxford (USgamer)

“The Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection could stand a few more extras. Customizable controls would be great, as would sound options, design documents, or artwork. When you think about everything the original All-Stars offered-three graphically upgraded Mario games, plus a “lost” game-3D All-Stars is a bit lacking. That said, the games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars still hold up today.”

Atomix | Alberto Desfassiaux | 80 / 100 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a pretty well made HD collection of three top Nintendo games. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Kyle Hanson | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-22-2020 | The collection as a whole might not bring much to the table beyond the games it transfers to a newer console in better shape than before, but when the games are this good that is enough. | Read review |
AusGamers | Steve Farrelly | 9.8 / 10 | 09-30-2020 | And between the three of them for completionists, we're talking at least 100 hours of gaming, but really, probably more. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Gabriel Bogdan | 8.9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers one of the best collection of Super Mario Games ever made, even if the upgrades and presentation of the whole collection could have deserved a lot more love for details. If you wanna experience Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy in its best form yet, you should definitely get this. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Charlie Kelly | 8 / 10 | 09-17-2020 | With quite the high price point, Super Mario 3D All-Stars will be quite the difficult sell for long time fans. However, for every fan burned by the age old story of expensive remasters and ports, there’s players like me, getting to explore the magic of some wonderful games for the first time ever. Frustrations aside, you could do a whole of a lot worse when it comes to ports. If you’re at all keen to get your jumping, cleaning and galaxy surfing on, delve on in. | Read review |
COGconnected | Alex Everatt | 92 / 100 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy are three near-perfect platforming adventures. In my opinion, they are must-play games that everyone should experience at some point, and what better time then now on the Nintendo Switch. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Brad Lang | 6.5 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Despite collecting three of Mario's most well-known games, Super Mario 3D All Stars doesn't justify their porting onto the Switch. With minimal improvements, few features that truly make it feel like an "Anniversary celebration" and some bafflingly lazy design choices, 3D All Stars feels like more like a quick cash grab. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Luke Hemming | 10 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Well, it was never in doubt really, was it? Super Mario 3D All-Stars represents the pinnacle of platforming goodness and with perfect ports, as well as top notch optimisation for the console, it's a must-buy. | Read review |
Daily Mirror | James Ide | 4 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | These are some of Mario's best outings and all three titles hold up remarkably well. The package favours authentic recreations rather than adding new content or updating them too much, which will please most fans. | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 9 / 10 | 09-22-2020 | This is Nintendo’s love letter to Mario fans around the world and despite minor issues I have with each title’s translation to the hybrid handheld-home console, it will be one I will treasure forever. | Read review |
Destructoid | Chris Carter | 8.5 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars, as barebones as it might be as a compilation, is a great way to experience (or re-experience) these games all over again. It was a joy running through all three of them even if they weren't strictly upgraded. That goes double for Mario Galaxy, as this is going to be my preferred way to play it from now on. | Read review |
Digital Trends | Tom Caswell | 4 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | For those whose favorite games list features the three titles in this collection, you’ll probably be over the moon with the opportunity to play them all at any time on either your TV or on the go. Those who missed out on these entries in gaming history will likely have a tough time adapting to their controls but will find wonder and joy in playing Super Mario Galaxy. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Matt Sainsbury | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | All three of the games have historical worth, remain highly playable today, and are ported competently enough that they work. You're not going to suddenly find Bowser unbeatable because bugs have trashed what was once a great game. However, this is Nintendo's most valuable property and mascot, and it's amazing that the company didn't do more with this package than they have here. | Read review |
DualShockers | Sam Woods | 9 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | While it's missing a few bells and whistles, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a wonderful collection of some of Nintendo's most beloved classics. | Read review |
Echo Boomer | David Fialho | Recommended | 09-27-2020 | A fantastic bundle with the best versions of these three games. A blast for old fans and a must play to new ones. | Read review |
Eurogamer | Martin Robinson | Not Recommended | 09-16-2020 | Two of Nintendo's finest, and one of its most interesting, come together in a compilation that isn't worthy of their greatness. | Read review |
Forbes | Ollie Barder | 7.5 / 10 | 09-23-2020 | So if you missed these classic Super Mario games when they were originally released, then you should pick this collection up. However, if you loved these games as a kid and were expecting Nintendo to pull out all the stops and give them the technical update they deserved, you will feel a tad disappointed. | Read review |
Game Revolution | Jason Faulkner | 3.5 / 5 stars | 09-21-2020 | If you’re a Nintendo fan, you’re going to want to get Super Mario 3D All-Stars. However, just because the games are good doesn’t mean that these ports are great. They’re adequate, which has to be enough, I guess. | Read review |
Gameblog | Yann Bernard | 7 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 64 keeps its whole interest from historic and nostagic points of view, a revolutionary approach that Super Mario Sunshine spreads in every sense of the word, while Super Mario Galaxy takes off literally outer space, among the brightest three dimensional platformers. Such true ports preserve these masterpieces' authenticity, but the Super Mario 3D All-Stars title suggested more, both in content and style. Brilliant HD renditions with fully available soundtracks on the go don't shine enough to overshadow some old issues and Super Mario Galaxy 2's glaring omission from this otherwise stellar collection. | Read review |
GameGrin | Gary Sheppard | 7 / 10 | 10-03-2020 | Whilst these are great games, this isn’t a great collection. With almost no extras, very little tweaking of the games for the Switch and no Super Mario Galaxy 2 this just isn’t quite what I’d hoped for. I’m still enjoying the games, but for many people this won’t represent particularly great value. If you don’t already have the games then get it. If you do, you might want to give it some thought first. | Read review |
GameMAG | Александр Копанев | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is an amazing retrospective that shows us the first few steps that the series took going into three-demensional space. Even in this original form the trilogy easily stands tall among most modern games with it's timeless game design. All we can do now is just appreciate this masterpieces and celebrate Mario's anniversary together. | Read review |
GamePro | Dennis Michel | 80 / 100 | 11-18-2020 | The All Star Collection is a wonderful time travel through the 3D Mario universe, but it does not reach its full potential. | Read review |
Gamersky | 战术大米 | 8.8 / 10 | 09-22-2020 | If one wants to experience the masterpiece of Mario franchise, the game is a must-buy. Each of the games deserve more polishing, but now they seem just so outdated from graphic to UI. | Read review |
GameSkinny | Ethan Anderson | 8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Little effort was put into modernizing Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and somehow, that's still more than enough. | Read review |
GameSpew | Kim Snaith | 7 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | On the whole, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a decent collection. It doesn’t try to impress with extra features or fancy padding; it simply puts three games from the past in a simple collection for old fans to enjoy. | Read review |
GameSpot | Kevin Knezevic | 8 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Despite its minimal trimmings, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a worthwhile collection of some of the plumber's most memorable adventures. | Read review |
GamesRadar+ | Sam Loveridge | 4 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All Stars' package of three of the best 3D Mario games are just enhanced and tweaked enough to be an enjoyable revisiting, but without removing the classic charm. | Read review |

GamingBolt | Pramath | 8 / 10 | 09-26-2020 | The three games it encompasses are fantastic, so Mario 3D All Stars is still worth buying. However, Nintendo is, ultimately, coasting off of the back of some amazing work it did more than a decade ago to sell what is ultimately a disappointingly barebones, facile celebration of gaming's most important icon who truly deserves better. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Anthony Shelton | 75 / 100 | 09-24-2020 | It's tough because you should play the games, but this collection is only a must-have if you've never played them or have no means of playing the copies you own. Otherwise, the included soundtracks are not enough to make this 35th anniversary package feel special enough to warrant a buy. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Adam Cook | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Whether the year it was released has affected the way Super Mario 3D All-Stars came together, we'll probably never know, but it still comes with a wholehearted recommendation simply due to the quality of the games. | Read review |
GRYOnline.pl | Adam Zechenter | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Mario isn’t for everyone – that’s self-evident. But Super Mario 3D All-Stars combines three games so good that all platformer fans out there simply have to own it. Even if you already know Mario 64 and Galaxy from WiiU, it’s still worth buying the set just for Sunshine. Even at full price. Not even kidding. | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Kirstin Swalley | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-20-2020 | It goes without saying that these classic Mario titles hold up extremely well. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | Álvaro Alonso | 80 / 100 | 09-16-2020 | Three fantastic games -one that feels a little old, one that still in good shape and another that is the same masterpiece- together in a somewhat lackluster compilation. | Read review |
IGN Italy | Mattia Ravanelli | 7 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Nintrendo packed some truly unforgettable classics in a single pack. And forgot to celebrate them the way they deserved to. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Sean Warhurst | 4.7 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | With the crumbling edifice of the world being chipped away every day by the chisel of COVID-19, it's a welcome comfort diving back into these three games and reliving the classic days of Mario's early adventures in the third dimension. | Read review |
KeenGamer | Nick Pace | 9 / 10 | 09-23-2020 | Three classic Mario games return! This Super Mario 3D All-Stars review focuses on authenticity and the inclusion of worthy enhancements. At the price of a newly released game, can this collection live up to the classic name of Super Mario? | Read review |
Kotaku | Ian Walker | Recommended | 09-16-2020 | Although I have my qualms with this collection—strange inconsistencies in the Super Mario Sunshine port chief among them—it does what it set out to do: chart Mario’s evolution from a bushwhacking pioneer to the inimitable mascot of 3D platforming. | Read review |
Luis Alamilla | Luis Alamilla | 8.5 / 10 | 09-21-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a simple but fantastic collection! Consisting of the 3 of the most phenomenal platformers out there, this collection is one of the best ways to experience these classics! | Read review |
Merlin'in Kazanı | Ersin Kılıç | 78 / 100 | 09-30-2020 | Even Super Mario Galaxy alone is a big reason to buy this pack. | Read review |
Niche Gamer | Fingal Belmont | 7 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | This was the chance for these three titles to get definitive versions, but instead these are mostly alternatives to the originals. In spite of Nintendo’s low-efforts, the quality of the games themselves are high enough that make them worth your time. Super Mario Sunshine especially is noteworthy since used copies are usually cost-prohibitive and Gamecube controllers are getting harder to find. | Read review |
Nintendo Enthusiast | Andrew Rockett | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Although nothing here is likely to change your opinion on any of the titles, most people who have played these games don't need any convincing. Each game holds up very well and shines behind its own compelling strengths. | Read review |
Nintendo Life | Chris Scullion | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | We've had an absolute blast playing through these three gems all over again, especially now they look sharper than ever. It's a shame that the presentation is practically barebones with no bonus content beyond the soundtracks, but there can still be no denying the quality of the games on offer here. This is the Beatles' Greatest Hits of the video game world, and is an absolute treat whether you're reliving it in HD or discovering it for the first time. | Read review |

NintendoWorldReport | John Rairdin | 8.5 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Updated, sharper textures for Super Mario 64, widescreen support for Super Mario Sunshine, and diverse new control options for Super Mario Galaxy, each bring welcome additions to their respective games. While yes, the updates are restrained somewhat in their ambition, the end result is undeniable. Even if some elements show their age, this is without a doubt, the best, and most versatile release these three classic 3D platformers have ever received. | Read review |
Noisy Pixel | Jake Yoder | 8.5 / 10 | 09-22-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a collection of three of the most genre-defining releases in 3D platformer history. It brings these games together and makes them easily accessible to give gamers a chance to experience these titles for the first time or the hundredth. I’m left wishing that there was more included with the releases such as additional options or extras, but it’s undeniable that this is a must-play for Switch owners. | Read review |
NoobFeed | Adam Siddiqui | 90 / 100 | 09-19-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars contains some of Mario's best adventures but as a 35th-anniversary collection, it falls short of what should be a celebration of one of the biggest figures in entertainment | Read review |

Press Start | Shannon Grixti | 8.5 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is another must-own game for Nintendo Switch. It brings together three games from three different generations and shows just how timeless the Mario franchise is. At the same time, it is a shame that Nintendo didn't celebrate the iconic franchise a little more throughout the presentation of the package. | Read review |
Rapid Reviews UK | Rachel Turner | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-28-2020 | This impressive collection of games boasts updated HD graphics and improved resolution as well as controls optimised for the Nintendo Switch. Most excitingly out of the 3 titles included is the chance to be able to use the joy-cons in Super Mario Galaxy to mimic the original movement controls utilised by the Wii-mote. As if this wasn’t enough the icing on the cake for this plentiful offering is the inclusion of the OG soundtracks for the games being featured as well. Plenty for fans both old and new to sink their teeth into but the proof is in the pudding. | Read review |
Rocket Chainsaw | Andrew Cathie | 3.5 / 5 stars | 10-04-2020 | If the collection had gone beyond being a simple port and upping of resolution this could have been an utterly amazing experience, but unfortunately the lack of improvements to the game makes it a lacklustre collection. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Matúš Štrba | 9 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario Galaxy hasn't aged a day and it is the best game of this collection. SM64 and Sunshine could get a bit more love from developers. | Read review |
Shacknews | Ozzie Mejia | 7 / 10 | 09-22-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is frustrating, because it could be more. It could be so much more. But even with Nintendo phoning it in, the games themselves are such classics that they're still worth putting in your Switch library. Just make sure you add it before it goes away forever. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Nicolò Bicego | 8 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a must have if you love classic platform games, but Nintendo could have done way more to celebrate Mario's 35th birthday. | Read review |
Stevivor | Steve Wright | 8 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a decent bundle of games, though Super Mario 64 has aged poorly with clumsy controls, muddy visuals and no real effort by Nintendo to remaster or re-energise the game for the umpteenth platform you’ve just bought it on. Again. Super Mario Sunshine is a vast improvement upon that (and it should be, published five years later), though Super Mario Galaxy is truly the pick of the bunch, a game as great now as it was back then. Rosalina for life. | Read review |
TechRaptor | Austin Suther | 8.5 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | All three of these games are representative of why Super Mario is such a great series. Though the ports for 64 and Sunshine have a few flaws, Galaxy feels absolutely perfect on the Switch. | Read review |
Telegraph | Tom Hoggins | 4 / 5 stars | 09-20-2020 | As Nintendo's famous plumber reaches his 35th birthday, the Japanese gaming giant has dusted off three of his defining achievements in one celebratory package. | Read review |
The Digital Fix | Dani Cross | 10 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Despite availability issues, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is easily one of the greatest games on Switch and a celebration of some of the best Nintendo games of all-time. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Danilo Dellafrana | 8.6 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a good collection, but more because of the games it contains than because of Nintendo's effort in making it. The absence of extras and of Super Mario Galaxy 2 are an unpleasant disappointment. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Stefan L | 7 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Much like an actual 35th birthday party (I assume), Super Mario 3D All-Stars just feels a little halfhearted. It bundles together three great platformers, all of which benefit from the bump up to HD resolutions, and Nintendo have done well to adapt the varying controls to suit the Nintendo Switch, but there's a squandered opportunity to enhance and go beyond this in a meaningful way. Maybe Nintendo are saving themselves for the big five-oh in 2035? | Read review |
ThisGenGaming | Robby Bisschop | 8.5 / 10 | 10-12-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars offers the best versions available for Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy, introducing them to new players on the widely adopted Switch and helping to keep the games around for posterity. It’s a bit of a downer that Super Mario 64 isn’t the much-improved version we’ve had on the DS, but I’ll take it as a nice nostalgic bonus in what is otherwise an amazing collection of games. | Read review |
Thumbsticks | Daniel New | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-23-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a limited time release in both physical and digital formats. We can only guess at the reason but whatever misgivings you have about the nature of the collection – or its position as Nintendo’s big fall release – it’s still an essential purchase. The three included games look better than ever and provide hours and hours of exquisitely designed, eye-bleedingly inventive gameplay. | Read review |
TrustedReviews | Jade King | 4 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars marks the long awaited arrival of some stone cold classics on Nintendo Switch, even if it doesn't always give them the esteemed treatment they deserve to truly shine in the modern era. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Rebecca Stone | 4 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | There’s no denying that Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy are at the top of the list of Nintendo’s most outstanding games, and the 3D All-Stars collection serves as a retrospective and reminder of Mario’s growth over the course of 11 years. | Read review |

USgamer | Nadia Oxford | 4 / 5 stars | 09-16-2020 | The Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection could stand a few more extras. When you think about everything the original All-Stars offered-three graphically upgraded Mario games, plus a "lost" game-3D All-Stars is a bit lacking. That said, the games in Super Mario 3D All-Stars still hold up today. I'm surprised how fun Super Mario 64 still is, and Super Mario Galaxy remains one of the heroic plumber's best outings. VG247 | Alex Donaldson | Recommended | 09-16-2020 | I still think Mario deserved a more lavish birthday celebration, but the classic titles in this collection really can’t be diminished. | Read review |
VGChartz | Evan Norris | 7 / 10 | 10-14-2020 | There are some obvious omissions, including special features typical of anthologies like this and, most glaringly, Super Mario Galaxy 2, but the greatness of the included games shines through. | Read review |
Video Chums | A.J. Maciejewski | 8.4 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is brimming with charm and fun. It's surprising that these games released so long ago because they have held up beautifully and thoroughly prove Nintendo's brilliant level of creativity over the years. Here's hoping for many more games to come! | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Leonardo Faria | 7.5 / 10 | 09-19-2020 | Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact this collection exists. I love that I can play these classic Mario games on-the-go. They are still ridiculously fun. But I can’t help but feel annoyed with the lack of effort put into this collection. It just feels lazy. We are paying sixty dollars for emulated ROMs, available for a limited time only, with little to no quality of life improvements. This sets a very bad precedent for the future. | Read review |
Wccftech | Dave Aubrey | 8.5 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars contains three legendary games, and this package allows you to experience all of them, the way you remember them. Whether or not these games hold up as competitive, contemporary pieces of entertainment is one question, but they do serve as an amazing time machine taking me to the moments I shared with friends and loved ones years ago, and this is a perfect way for you to form new memories with yours. This is three of the very best 3D platformers of all time, at their best. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | David Morgan | 3.5 / 5 stars | 09-28-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a lackluster collection of three (mostly) excellent, timeless games. Nintendo has shown us what it can do when the effort is put in with 2004's Super Mario 64 DS, so the lack of attention afforded here stings all the more. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Kieron Verbrugge | 7.5 / 10 | 09-16-2020 | It's hard to fault a collection of three absolute classics like these, but this particular package feels surprisingly unceremonious | Read review |
Worth Playing | Chris "Atom" DeAngelus | 8.5 / 10 | 09-21-2020 | In the end, Super Mario 3D All-Stars is a perfectly adequate collection of three very good games. Even if Sunshine isn't to your taste, Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy are two of the finest platformers ever made, and they absolutely make the collection worthwhile. The only disappointment is that not enough was done to adjust and touch up the games for the Switch. Despite that shortcoming, there's hardly a better bang for your buck on the Switch than Super Mario 3D All-Stars, and it is a must-have for any Switch owner. Just remember that for some reason, it's only available for purchase through March 2021. | Read review |
ZTGD | Ken McKown | 8 / 10 | 09-29-2020 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars is certainly rough around the edges as far as a classic collection is concerned, but there is no denying the impact of all three games. The omission of Galaxy 2 and the questionable ports are certainly head scratchers, but that doesn’t change the fact that this collection will deliver hours of fun for Mario players old and new. Another solid title for the Switch lineup. Now make sure to snag it before Nintendo removes it from sale…at least until they break it up and sell them individually that is. | Read review |
