Outriders offers a satisfying combat loop and rewarding dungeon crawling, but it's hard to overlook the game's deep structural problems - obnoxious cutscenes, repetitive mission design, and a dull, poorly acted sci-fi story make this looter largely forgettable.

Buried by an unsatisfying combat loop and bad campaign, Outriders is a forgettable loot game that ends right as it’s getting started.
Outriders is a brash and bold looter shooter that will keep you entertained through the campaign and side missions, but its endgame content gets repetitive fast.
Outriders juggles some truly captivating ideas for the looter shooter genre, yet fails to deftly execute them. While it succeeds in combining traditional third person shooting with rewarding dungeon crawling, its messy matchmaking, repetitive mission design, and a dull sci-fi story hold People Can Fly back from delivering to their fullest potential.

33bits | Rubén Rionegro | 75 / 100 | 04-12-2021 | Outriders is a fresh, entertaining and fun game in its playability, but with a visual design and a plot that does not surprise or attract attention, full of clichés and elements that we have already seen before in many games. The combat system is quite deep and allows to develop the characters in a very particular way. Unfortunately its many glitches and performance issues take their toll on the title. | Read review |

Attack of the Fanboy | Josh Garibay | 3 / 5 stars | 04-08-2021 | Outriders has great ideas and those come shining through at various high points to spectacular effect, but it is pushing against the weight of inconsistent execution and unstable systems. | Read review |
AusGamers | Adrian Haas | 4.5 / 10 | 04-26-2021 | In many ways it’s like an overblown action movie from the 1980s or early part of the 1990s, but even here it doles out the cheese without its own identity. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Mohammad Talebian | 7.5 / 10 | 04-13-2021 | At first glance Outriders might look like some other shooters such as Destiny or The Division, but its complicated and diverse combat help it stand alone and impress, and with some better support and polish can easily challenge other loot shooters in the market. | Read review |
Bazimag | Fardin Bagherian | 5.4 / 10 | 04-19-2021 | Outriders could have become a successful looter-shooter/MMO, but the server issues and macro developer mistakes place the game below other equals. Shortcomings in the narrative, dialogues, sound effects, and AI are so severe that can not be overlooked. The game has impressive looting and customization (the singular thing that does right!), but the repetitive gameplay, unbalanced difficulty and especially server connection issues, and unavailability of the coop with friends offer nothing but frustration and disappointment. You should really leave this game aside. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Quinn Hiers | 7 / 10 | 04-03-2021 | Overall, while Outriders doesn’t invent any new mechanics, the story is enjoyable, and the interesting classes, gear system, and world tiers make for some very challenging but fun gameplay. There were definitely a few hiccups on release day, and there are some easy alterations that can be made to make Outriders more accessible. But I would definitely recommend picking up this title. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Alex Handziuk | 7.5 / 10 | 04-09-2021 | Outriders’ stellar gunplay and abilities make for a standout take on the cover-shooter genre, even though the overall experience is dragged down by server instability. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Tom Quirk | 7 / 10 | 04-20-2021 | Judging the game by the experience as it is now, I certainly had a good time with it, particularly when I could find a party to play with. However, if you’re only intending to play solo and want a good sci-fi cover shooter, the experience will eventually wear out its welcome as you hit the endgame. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Raúl Pinto | Recommended | 04-09-2021 | Outriders is an action shooter game with RPG mechanics. A frenetic and aggressive game in which we will be a mutant throughout a civil war, developing our powers, while we arrive the narrative conclusion. The multiplayer stands out over the solo game, feeling especially fun and well-implemented at the RPG level, despite the Matchmacking problems. A beautiful title at graphic level, which will not leave us indifferent with its incredible settings and special effects. | Read review |
COGconnected | James Paley | 72 / 100 | 04-05-2021 | What we have here are two stories told with mixed results. The grim, gorgeous sci-fi saga fell flat for me. I couldn’t get invested in this last leg of the human race turning to tribalism and violence in the face of adversity. I’m pretty bored with ‘special soldier saves the day’ stories. But the loot cycle was a different matter. This tale of frustration, anticipation, determination, and joy was immediately compelling. I dug into the mechanical guts early and easily. The combat is varied, breathless, and brutal. The character progression is a decent mix of stats and skills, there’s a ton of customization to mess around with, and the difficulty scaling is perfectly fluid. I can tolerate a lot of nonsense in exchange for a good gameplay loop. But if you’re hoping for a package as good as the prize, you might be disappointed. So long as you’re prepared to dig a little for that glittering pearl, there’s a ton of fun to be had with Outriders. | Read review |

DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 8.5 / 10 | 04-14-2021 | While it may deter the contrarian with a palette for complaining about the odd grinding session, Outriders’ prolific statement plays an important role, impacting the ongoing conversation within its subjugated and controversial genre. If anything, the title delivers us a complete package that will easily be adored by fans, and may categorically assert itself as one of its genre’s greatest achievements. An essential this generation. | Read review |
Destructoid | Chris Carter | 7 / 10 | 04-02-2021 | It’s a lower bar to clear to be sure, but People Can Fly delivered what Bungie and other studios can’t seem to do these days: a complete $60 game. Outriders is a flawed looter shooter that can fall into a rut with its core looting loop, but the gunplay is fun, and that’s a decent-sized win. If you can grab two other people to recruit via Game Pass, it’s a great way to spend some time. | Read review |

Digital Trends | Giovanni Colantonio | 3.5 / 5 stars | 04-05-2021 | Is Outriders a sophisticated action game with a compelling sci-fi story? No. Does it feel fun to freeze a spider with an ice turret and shatter it with a well-placed sniper shot? You bet. Sometimes, that’s all one really wants from a shooter like this. It could use an offline mode for single-player sessions and a fair bit of maintenance, but it’s a solid foundation for an action game that respects its players’ time. | Read review |

EGM | Michael Goroff | 6 / 10 | 04-07-2021 | People Can Fly’s special brand of explosive gunplay is better than ever in Outriders, but the game loses its way by shoehorning in too many of the RPG mechanics that have become bog standard for the “looter shooter” genre. What should have been a rollercoaster all the way through ends up feeling more like a car in stop-and-go traffic. | Read review |
Eurogamer | Vikki Blake | Recommended | 04-09-2021 | While it’s unlikely to make fans of those of you who’ve sampled the shooters that came before it and left unsatisfied, as a die-hard Guardian and card-carrying fangirl of the genre, Outriders tickles me in all the right places. Offering gunplay that feels solid and satisfying and an array of additional powers and abilities to keep combat fresh and exciting, I can only admit that Outriders has surprised me in all the right ways. Maybe it’ll surprise you, too. | Read review |
Everyeye.it | Francesco Fossetti | 8 / 10 | 04-19-2021 | Despite the obvious uncertainties in the first game sequences, Outriders was able to conquer us. What might have seemed like a classic shooter in dynamics and uncertain in the story has instead proved to be a shooter with assuring gameplay, and able to stand out for its density and richness of content. The campaign unfortunately remains subdued on the narrative front, but the gameplay sculpted by People Can Fly has something magnetic. | Read review |
Explosion Network | Dylan Blight | 8 / 10 | 04-07-2021 | People Can Fly aren’t re-inventing the wheel here, and it may be rough around the edges, but this is some of the most thrilling third-person combat I’ve played in years. | Read review |
Forbes | Paul Tassi | 9 / 10 | 04-07-2021 | Outriders has surpassed my expectations in almost every way. Months ago, I figured this would be another looter flop, but now, it’s one of the best current entries in the genre, and even with no “live service roadmap” at hand, it’s clear you could potentially extract hundreds of hours from it regardless. I plan to do just that. | Read review |

Game Rant | Joshua Duckworth | 4 / 5 stars | 04-15-2021 | Outriders is the type of game where players get what they put in. For those who want a pick-up and put-down RPG with an emphasis on story, Outriders has that covered. For those who want hundreds of hours of gameplay in tense and adrenaline-pumping combat with powerful builds, Outriders has that covered too. Ultimately, the strength of Outriders is how it connects to its players and what they want out of the game, meaning everyone walks away feeling different about it, and that can only be a good thing. | Read review |
Game Revolution | Mack Ashworth | 3.75 / 5 stars | 04-07-2021 | Outriders delivers satisfying combat but suffers from a lackluster story. For co-op players, there’s a lot to entertain you here and the banter will help fill in the duller moments. The grind is also less intense than in similar experiences. What’s more, a bonus nod has to be given for this title’s completeness at launch. | Read review |
Gameblog | Alix Dulac | 6 / 10 | 04-10-2021 | Outriders is an OK RPG shooter that can be thrilling in it gunfights, but it never takes off. Its weak narrative and numerous bugs and crashes and lack of memorable moments prevent it from sitting next to the most successful online TPS. | Read review |
Gamefa | Mahdi Maleki | 8.5 / 10 | 04-05-2021 | Outriders got the best elements of looter-shooters and mixed those with RPG elements, then promoted the mixture as much as possible. The gameplay is incredibly entertaining thanks to its attractive mechanics, solid shooting system, fun looting and well-implemented classes with various powers. Also the story of Outriders alongside its rich lore, give you more reasons to deep dive in the game’s world and have fun for many hours. Solo or Co-op, don’t miss the Outriders. | Read review |
GameGrin | Blake Hawthorn | 5 / 10 | 04-23-2021 | Outriders is a boring game to play solo, with a lack of any real end-game content and bugs that may wipe all of your progress it’s probably best to wait for a sale for this one. | Read review |

Gamers Heroes | Blaine Smith | 8 / 10 | 04-01-2021 | You will struggle to find another third-person shooter that has innovated as much on the formula as Outriders, not since Gears of War took the genre to new heights. The combat is absolutely incredible, the classes ooze with potential and development, the world is gritty and engaging, and the ability to enjoy all of this alongside good friends just heightens the entire experience. | Read review |

GameSpew | Richard Seagrave | 8 / 10 | 04-08-2021 | Still, in time, Outriders‘ bugs and server issues are likely to be eradicated, leaving its only real downside to be its poorly-told story full of loose ends. And even with that said, the narrative remains interesting and engaging – just nothing special. The real draw here is the captivating looter-shooter action that grabs you early on and simply doesn’t let go. You’ll love running into each combat encounter, commanding the battlefield like the Altered being that you are, before sweeping up any loot left by those you’ve slain. Then, back at camp, you’ll paw over your stats, improving and modding your gear as you see fit, before heading out into the fray once again. To play Outriders is to become engrossed in it, whether you’re alone or with others. Needless to say, it might just prove to be the biggest surprise of the year. | Read review |

GamingTrend | David Burdette, Ron Burke | 80 / 100 | 04-14-2021 | Despite all of the ways that Outriders is stuck in the past, the moment to moment gameplay is so compelling that it’s impossible to say it’s not a blast — especially with friends. It’s also remarkably expansive in its crafting and skill trees, with plenty of ways to customize your playstyle. I may not be that invested in the story, and this certainly isn’t that different from most first person shooters, but Outriders is well worth the time and effort. Even if there may be extra effort put in because of crappy server connections. | Read review |

Generación Xbox | Javier Gutierrez Bassols | 8.5 / 10 | 04-10-2021 | Therefore, Outriders complies with everything he promised in his day. Just Push Start | Mark Fajardo | 3.5 / 5 stars | 04-08-2021 | On paper, Outriders does a lot of things right. It is a fun experience, complete with thrilling battles and engaging fights, though it can be a little rough on less-skilled players. It all comes together in an exhilarating post-game, though server issues make it frustrating to deal with. Looter shooters are cool but I’m usually in and out as soon as I’ve played enough for review. Outriders is different though. Its juxtaposition between different gameplay designs, occasional funny writing, and just good feeling combat hooked me on its campaign. The different branching classes that play differently from another further incentivize me to replay after I was done to truly experience everything Outriders has to offer. Sure there are a few bugs here and there, the story can dip a few times and if you’re on last-gen consoles outside of the One X, probably don’t want to play this. PlayStation LifeStyle | Chandler Wood | 8 / 10 | 04-12-2021 | Outriders is simply and unapologetically Outriders. And that’s what, despite its flaws, makes it stand tall. Because it owns its flaws and rough spots, all weathered with pride through a launch period that was as rough as the Outriders first landing on Enoch. Riding out that storm offers an experience that is simply fun to play, and its something that I consistently can’t wait to get back to. High risk, high reward gameplay and crafting very tight and specific builds leads to an endlessly engaging gameplay loop. Balancing the power fantasy with challenge for players is a difficult task, but Outriders manages it well. It’s far from a perfect game, but it’s so undeniably honest in its pursuit of being exactly what it is that there’s nothing else quite like it out there. And that itself is what makes Outriders so compelling. Because Outriders is just Outriders. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Joe Apsey | 8.5 / 10 | 04-05-2021 | Outriders is an excellent video game that doesn’t drown itself in marketplaces and all the traditional systems we have come to know from a live service. Polygon | Suriel Vazquez | Recommended | 04-09-2021 | That’s a huge letdown, because the encounters feel tuned for co-op rather than solo play. Playing alone, I could feel the absence of other players; although enemies are tougher when playing with friends, having another person to divert a boss’ attention feels more natural than having you and a boss circle a pillar as you whittle down its health, or slowly working your way through the unrelenting hail of bullets that some of the later encounters subject you to. You also get to revive your friends in multiplayer (you even get one self-revive), which makes some of the tougher fights a little easier. | Read review |

Push Square | Liam Croft | 7 / 10 | 04-06-2021 | Outriders absolutely excels when it lets combat, solid gunplay, and supremely satisfying abilities do the talking. Its unique blend of aggression really is something to behold in action. Rubbish characters, the requirement to maintain an online connection and couple with servers, and various technical hitches hold it back from greatness, but they don’t muddy the picture so much to dissuade a recommendation. Outriders is pretty class in motion. | Read review |
Rapid Reviews UK | Ciaran McGinn | 4 / 5 stars | 04-05-2021 | In a world where live-service games are becoming all the rage, Outriders feels like a much-needed breath of fresh air. Even more interesting is the fact it arrives in the form of a looter-shooter, not too dissimilar from other games of its genre. But where the likes of Destiny and The Division pride themselves on being an ongoing gig, Outriders sets itself apart as a fairly linear third-person looter shooter with everything available at launch. So for the most part, what you see is what you get, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Outriders has set out to be something different in a genre that is becoming increasingly popular, but does it succeed? Absolutely. | Read review |
Rectify Gaming | Unknown | 7.5 / 10 | 04-24-2021 | I would recommend Outriders to those that are looking for a new take on The Division. If you can put up with the bland story, you might really enjoy Outriders’ gameplay. It’s a pretty typical looter shooter with a decent co-op mode, especially if you have friends. | Read review |
Rocket Chainsaw | Andrew Cathie | 3 / 5 stars | 04-28-2021 | If you’re looking for a fun time looting and shooting, and don’t mind skimping a little on the trappings, than this is definitely worth giving a chance to. | Read review |
RPGamer | Luis Mauricio | 3.5 / 5 stars | 06-10-2021 | Fans of both RPGs and shooters can get a lot out of it, but they shouldn’t expect a revolutionary game, for it is a mixed bag of interesting features and cliches. Even though the journey is enjoyable, Outriders is neither a strong contender in the RPG elite nor in the shooting universe. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Ondrej Džurdženík | 8.5 / 10 | 04-08-2021 | Festive amount of sci-fi action with brutal, but amusing future. | Read review |
Shacknews | TJ Denzer | 8 / 10 | 04-07-2021 | For its weird flaws, bugs, always online issues, obnoxious use of cutscenes, and b-movie attitude, Outriders is still mostly what I wanted it to be in execution and I think it’s built for a wealth of future content and improvements that mean it’s just going to get better from here. Whether I jump into the game on my solo character or team up with my friends, I know I’m in for a good, visceral, and rewarding time. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | Rhett Roxl | 6.5 / 10 | 04-13-2021 | If you have the patience for it, I highly suggest that you give this game a try. Its combat mechanic is one of the best in its genre in years. Unlike its contemporaries in the same field, which are stereotyped as having vanilla storylines, this game’s story is engaging and awe-inducing. When this game works, it will send you on a fantastic journey worth going through. As soon as it fails, however, it fails tremendously. If that’s something you don’t have the patience for, just wait for a couple of months for updates and for the game’s server to become stable. | Read review |

Slant Magazine | Justin Clark | 3 / 5 stars | 04-16-2021 | At its best, Outriders is a looter shooter that’s surprisingly generous with its loot. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Unknown | 7.3 / 10 | 04-01-2021 | Outriders is a rare example of a complete looter-shooter, with fun combat mechanics but a lack of ambition as you play through the story and its endgame | Read review |
TechRaptor | Nick Maillet | 8.5 / 10 | 04-09-2021 | Outriders is one of those rare games where it not only lives up to expectations, but completely surpasses them. The game’s multiple character classes and seeming endless amount of customization makes for a fresh and engaging gameplay loop long after you finish the campaign. | Read review |
Telegraph | Tom Hoggins | 4 / 5 stars | 04-23-2021 | With welcoming flair and terrific gunplay, People Can Fly’s looter-shooter offers a fine example of the genre | Read review |

The Games Machine | Marco Bortoluzzi | 8.2 / 10 | 04-02-2021 | Giving Outriders a score is a tougher challenge than I thought. The core gameplay loop is fun, incredibly so when it clicks, the loot system is well thought out and wielding the powers of the Anomaly is power-tripping. But the game is also a slow burner, enemy variety is disappointingly poor, there is no scaling of content for party members of lower levels, and audio and animations aren’t always that great. But the core is good, and we have faith that People Can Fly will polish those rough edges. | Read review |
The Outerhaven Productions | Keith Mitchell | 3 / 5 stars | 05-13-2021 | At the end of the day, Outriders has a lot going for it. The gameplay is fun, I love the fact that there is more than enough loot to collect and spec out my characters. However, once you hit the end game, the game is essentially dead and that’s troublesome. Adding to that, the game still suffers from a number of issues including terrible online, random crashes, abilities either not working or working correctly and random crashing – Despite People Can Fly putting in overtime to get the game to a better place. For now, I’d wait for the game to mature, unless the lure of some fantastic running and gunning is the only thing that matters to you. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Jim Hargreaves | 6 / 10 | 04-08-2021 | Outriders juggles some truly captivating ideas for the looter shooter genre, yet fails to deftly execute them. While it succeeds in combining traditional third person shooting with rewarding dungeon crawling, its messy matchmaking, repetitive mission design, and a dull sci-fi story hold People Can Fly back from delivering to their fullest potential. | Read review |
Too Much Gaming | Carlos Hernandez | 8 / 10 | 04-15-2021 | It’s a complete game straight out of the box; Outriders doesn’t feel like another one of those live service games | Read review |
TrueAchievements | Luke Albiges | 4 / 5 stars | 04-09-2021 | Outriders is comfortably one of the best games of the year so far, and it’s only going to get better as the post-launch polish puts paid to the technical problems that currently hold it back from true greatness. | Read review |
TrueGaming | محمد جابر الصهيبي | 7.5 / 10 | 04-22-2021 | Despite the many loading screens and some issues, the game will give you hours of entertaining gameplay, it might take you a while before you shelf it. | Read review |
TrustedReviews | Alastair Stevenson | 4 / 5 stars | 04-07-2021 | Outriders is a competent third person shooter with solid gunplay and a surprisingly developed story. This makes it a great game for any player on the hunt for a compelling third person shooter. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Ed McGlone | 4 / 5 stars | 04-09-2021 | Publishers, instead of trying to make everything the next Destiny-killer, should do what People Can Fly and Square Enix have done with Outriders. Offering a full experience with multiplayer, deep character customization, and plenty of post-game content works beautifully | Read review |
Unboxholics | Θέμης Μπολτσής | Not Recommended | 04-12-2021 | Outriders may feel like a game from another era, with some structural design flaws, but it managed to be plenty of fun. I would easily recommend it to those looking for a new co-op game to enjoy with their friends, as the gameplay is fast, addictive, challenging and rewarding, successfully combining elements of adored games such as Borderlands, Destiny and Gears. The main problem though is the technical problems that drag down the experience. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Unknown | 9 / 10 | 04-07-2021 | Outriders is an absolute blast to play, with it easily standing out as my favourite game of 2021 so far. I won’t deny that it has some issues (the early server problems being the most obvious), but they’re easy to look past when the combat mechanics are so varied and fun, building your character and unlocking new loot is satisfying, and sharing the experience with friends brings with it a rewarding sense of strategy. It’s brilliant. | Read review |
Video Games Chronicle | Edwin Evans-Thirlwell | 2 / 5 stars | 04-08-2021 | Outriders is its own greatest victim. There are some decent ideas in here – an absorbing cauldron of combat variables, some majestic geography, even a few guns worth holding onto – but they’re dragged down and suffocated by a game that doesn’t want to entertain you but hypnotise you with the prospect of another trinket. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Josh Wise | 5 / 10 | 04-09-2021 | Maybe, after the talented developers at People Can Fly have furnished the game with a few patches, Outriders will shine. The problem is that, aside from its technical troubles, the charms of its world and its combat lose their edge. I get numb to it eventually. Who knows? Perhaps, in a couple of weeks, we might set aside the pains of its landing, and find the urge to jump back in. Don’t think I’ve reached that point yet. | Read review |
Wccftech | Alessio Palumbo | 7.5 / 10 | 05-03-2021 | Outriders is a fun looter-shooter game where both the action and RPG parts of the formula are exceedingly well done. It does falter at the endgame, though, and it comes with a myriad of technical issues, not to mention an antiquated world structure; bear all of that in mind if you’re looking to purchase at full price. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Adam Ryan | 8.5 / 10 | 04-19-2021 | While it might appear to be just another cover shooter on the surface, Outriders’ excellent class abilities, aggressive combat and engaging loot systems allow it to stand toe to toe with some of the genre’s greats. | Read review |
Windows Central | Miles Dompier | 3.5 / 5 stars | 04-07-2021 | If you’re willing to overlook some questionable design choices, there’s plenty of fun to be had with Outriders. Despite its numerous flaws, Outriders manages to provide loads of incredible, over-the-top fun. | Read review |
Worth Playing | Andreas Salmen | 6.8 / 10 | 04-06-2021 | I’m hooked. I love Outriders’ shooting, skill, and loot mechanics and how they work together to form a highly addicting co-op shooter. While it has a lot of features that I’m not fond of, the core gameplay is solid enough to easily carry the rest of the experience. If you’re into looter shooter or dungeon crawler games, Outriders will scratch that itch | Read review |
Xbox Achievements | Richard Walker | 50 / 100 | 04-07-2021 | Outriders is a looter-shooter built upon solid enough foundations, and its blend of gunplay and powers can prove intermittently enjoyable. But it’s also a game lacking an engaging narrative heart, characters that you’ll care about, and any sort of exciting long-term content. The quest for loot will only sustain you for so long. | Read review |
Zoomg | Mohammad Sadegh Tavazaie | 8 / 10 | 05-12-2021 | Outriders has well used Gears’ elements in its combat system and combined it with its unique ideas. The result is a third-person shooter game, that along with the campaign system, the skill tree and its proper design, have a good impact on the player’s progress. | Read review |
ZTGD | Ken McKown | 7.5 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | Outriders is a perfect storm. A shiny new game to show off these new consoles. The fact that it launched day and date onto Game Pass has definitely helped with its success, as has the fact that gamers are hungry for new experiences. I will likely be playing a bunch of Outriders in 2021, and that speaks volumes to its longevity. I hope the team continues to expand on the title as we move through the year, as I look forward to coming back to it for quite some time. | Read review |
