Because of what it is, it inevitably ends up becoming repetitive, but New Pokémon Snap successfully recreates the magic of Pokémon Snap and strange joy of nabbing the perfect shot.

Overall, New Pokémon Snap is a relaxing but still a quite involved game There’s a lot to do in the Lental Region and the game definitely turned out better than I ever expected it to. While it can get a bit repetitive, there are enough surprises to keep you engaged.
New Pokémon Snap is pretty magical as well. It takes the unique formula of the 1999 original and expands on it just enough to feel like a completely new adventure, without diluting the simple joy of riding and snapping photos of impossible creatures.
New Pokémon Snap is video gaming’s equivalent of visiting Jurassic Park — without the whole eating-the-tourists thing — or landing a gig as a Planet Earth photographer. And you can make the trip from the comfort of your Switch.

Areajugones | Claudio Torres | 8.7 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | Exploring a world full of Pokémon, great landscapes and an impressive amount of interaction possibilities with and between them is something any fan of the saga should dream of. New Pokémon Snap can present a simple gameplay, but in which you can deepen to immortalize a myriad of unique moments and snapshots worthy of belonging to any nature photographer. | Read review |
Atomix | Alberto Desfassiaux | 80 / 100 | 04-28-2021 | With all its flaws and repetition, New Pokémon Snap is a great new approach to the that concept that made so special the Nintendo 64 classic from 1999. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Tess Smith | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-04-2021 | New Pokemon Snap is largely successful in recapturing the magic of the Nintendo 64 original… while it will probably not appeal to people who are not already a fan of Pokemon, for fans, New Pokemon Snap is a wonderful piece of fan service and wholly charming. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Jason Flatt | 8 / 10 | 05-02-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is not perfect, but it is far and away the sequel to the 1999 classic we have all been waiting for. While I wish some pacing issues and nitpicks with what is no longer in the game have influenced my enjoyment, overall, I cannot wait to spend countless more hours perfecting my photography skills and engrossing myself in this absolutely stunning world. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Julian Bieder | 8.8 / 10 | 05-04-2021 | New Pokémon Snap shows how a good sequel should be made: You don’t change the gameplay of the original, but use it as a basis to build on it with optimizations. Self-alternating routes, more boss stages, and four different motifs for each of the over 200 Pokémon show that the principle of the photo safari can still work excellently two decades later and have significantly more replay value. The only downer remains the uninspired plotline in the camp, which tends to bore rather than make the game more interesting. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Jordan Biordi | 8 / 10 | 05-11-2021 | New Pokémon Snap earns it’s name—maintaining what made the original so beloved, but making it feel fresh and exciting! | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Edie W-K | 8 / 10 | 05-05-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a fantastic sequel to a much-beloved N64 classic. It improves on everything from the original game, and the opportunity to snap cute pics of our favourite Pokémon with upgraded graphics is worth the purchase alone. Due to a few small annoyances, it falls short of being a masterpiece, but it’s certainly nothing that will ruin your enjoyment. New Pokémon Snap was worth the wait, and it’s a must-have for any Pokémon fan. | Read review |
COGconnected | Alexander Thomas | 78 / 100 | 05-07-2021 | With so much going on at any given time and imperfect means of interacting with the Pokémon – coupled with the ability to submit only one photo per outing per Pokémon at a time – New Pokémon Snap is asking you to complete dozens of perfect runs per stage to fill the Photodex. While the repetitive nature might be just fine for kids, this game may be better in short bursts for adults and perfectionists. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 8.5 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | New Pokemon Snap captures the magic of the original game without ever losing focus, expanding on that game with a vastly increased collection of Pokemon, colourful zones to explore, and a few other interesting developments behind the lens. It’s a delightful adventure that imagines the world of Pokemon as a lively and cathartic safari. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Drew Hurley | 8 / 10 | 05-07-2021 | It’s the absolute perfect time for this game. Not only because Pokémon is just settling into a new renaissance and resurgence of interest not seen since the 90s, but also because of the state of the world. Games that encapsulate escapism and the ability to just chill are desperately needed. It’s part of the reason Animal Crossing exploded like it did. New Pokémon Snap is enjoyable in the exact same way. A game to lose yourself in. A game to play on rainy Sundays. To play late at night. To unwind and to decompress. Best of all, it’s the perfect way to reconnect with the franchise in honour of the 25th anniversary. So, settle in, sleeve those new Shining Fates, throw on season two of Pokémon Journeys and get snapping. | Read review |
Daily Mirror | Eugene Sowah | 4 / 5 stars | 05-11-2021 | New Pokemon Snap is worth its twenty-two years wait. Developers kept what made the original game great but have added extra layers that have greatly improve the experience. The repetitive nature of the game may not be for everyone, with some finding it a slog to complete the game. | Read review |
Daily Star | Tom Hutchison | 4 / 5 stars | 05-05-2021 | It’s a calming, relatively tranquil game with a huge addictiveness at its core and a desire among players to come back and try to snap an ever-better picture perfect moment. | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Bryce Dewit | Recommended | 05-10-2021 | If you’re somebody that is looking for more substance there is a lot to be desired, and you likely will not find it worth the price tag. That being said however, I still recommend Pokemon Snap. It’s a delightful experience that embodies what the original game intended to create and amps it up to 11. Picking it up on sale would be best, but if you cannot wait that long and really want a laid back experience, it’s a worthy purchase. | Read review |
Destructoid | Eric Van Allen | 8.5 / 10 | 05-05-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a sign of the times in that way, but while it’s adapted to the age of Instagram, it hasn’t lost its soul in the process. This is the Pokémon Snap you remember, with a few additions that don’t always hit as resoundingly, but the foundation has been well-kept. It was a blast to spend a weekend just blasting through every ride this park had to offer, and they’re varied enough that I know I can go back today, tomorrow, and months from now, and still find new things to photograph, new interactions to fool around with, and a good time to be had. | Read review |
Digital Spy | Jess Lee | 4 / 5 stars | 05-17-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a delight, and a big part of that comes from how the Pokémon are brought to life, from the animations to their behaviours and the way they inhabit the world. Each unique creature is afforded their moment to shine, contributing towards making the Lental region a vivid and fulfilling place to explore. | Read review |
Digital Trends | Giovanni Colantonio | 4 / 5 stars | 05-03-2021 | New Pokemon Snap is a worthy follow up to a beloved classic that’s loaded with charm and a surprising amount of content. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Matt Sainsbury | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-06-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a delight to play. It’s bright, colourful, and overflowing with personality and while it does become a little too “grindy” for its own good, the core gameplay hasn’t evolved much from the N64 original, and that’s a very good thing indeed. Nintendo may have launched this in and around a lot of big blockbuster stuff (Returnal AND Resident Evil Village has been a big win for Sony over the last week), but then those games are so darned hardcore that New Pokémon Snap is exactly the antidote to them that I have needed. | Read review |
DualShockers | Sam Woods | 9 / 10 | 05-14-2021 | Overall, while New Pokemon Snap won’t be for everybody, there was a surprising amount of content, plenty of fantastic moments and a wonderfully crafted world. For anybody looking for a zen game to kick back to and forget about the worries of the world, I can’t recommend this one highly enough. | Read review |
Easy Allies | Daniel Bloodworth | 4 / 5 stars | 05-18-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a charming return to the N64 concept, full of fun interactions for anyone interested in documenting fictional wildlife and more to see than you might expect. | Read review |
Echo Boomer | David Fialho | Not Recommended | 05-04-2021 | I loved the idea of New Pokémon Snap and it works great for what it’s too simple, repetitive and very limited for a game in which the central mechanic is a photo mode. | Read review |
EGM | Michael Goroff | 10 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | New Pokémon Snap might be one of the most thoroughly pleasant games that’s come out for the Switch, if not ever. While the core gameplay is the same as it was in 1999, everything about the 2021 game is better. The environments are visual delights, the Pokémon are lovingly recreated, and the progression and pacing are just right. If the hobby of gaming has started to feel like a second or third job, then New Pokémon Snap might just be the vacation you need. | Read review |

Everyeye.it | Francesco Cilurzo | 7.3 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | New Pokémon Snap remains a video game that wears out very quickly, that burns its many elements of ingenuity certainly quickly, and that is bound to the tracks of its anachronistic DNA. New Pokémon Snap, however, is a carefully packaged product, which the fans of the series will surely be able to fully appreciate. | Read review |
Expansive | Laurie Jones | Recommended | 05-12-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is lovely, not just as a solitary, soul-cleansing experience, but as a shared adventure with friends and family both in your living room and all over the world. Trust us, it’s been worth the wait. | Read review |

Game Rant | Joshua Duckworth | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-13-2021 | Many fans have been waiting for a Pokemon Snap sequel since their childhood, and while it may not exactly be what they imagined, it’s a solid experience and highlights what has been sorely been missed in the franchise. New Pokemon Snap is a worthwhile sequel, a relaxing journey through the Pokemon world, and fun to play in the comfort of one’s home or on the go. | Read review |
Game Revolution | Paul Tamburro | 3.25 / 5 stars | 05-07-2021 | Handing in a four-star, 4,000-point photo of a Pokemon having a great time is satisfying, but New Pokemon Snap’s tedious progression makes it far more exhausting than it should be. I just wanted to see these beloved creatures frolicking with one another in their natural habitat, while simultaneously doing my best David Attenborough impersonation and capturing their antics on camera. However, its levels are far too structured for me to believe in its weird world, while its secrets are more laborious to uncover than they are fun. I had a reasonably enjoyable time with New Pokemon Snap, though it’s still a missed opportunity to do something with these creatures other than beat them up. | Read review |
GameGrin | Adam Kerr | 5 / 10 | 06-22-2021 | A middle of the road performance for New Pokémon Snap. It will certainly find its niche, and anyone who considers themselves a big Pokémon fan will come away from this game grinning about some really beautiful moments. The biggest issue with New Pokémon Snap is that there is no reason to stick around after the first couple of hours. | Read review |

GamingTrend | David Flynn | 95 / 100 | 05-10-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a delightful photography game that I’ll be coming back to constantly for just one more course. Seeing Pokémon in their natural habitats captures a unique magic the series has been missing for a while, and seeing how they react to you is a ton of fun. While filling out the Photodex is rewarding, equally rewarding is taking more creative snaps, editing them, and sharing them online. | Read review |
GBAtemp | Tom Bond | 7 / 10 | 04-30-2021 | Overall, New Pokemnon Snap is a decent game, and a mostly worthy successor to the N64 classic. If you were a fan of the original, you’ll be a fan of this one for sure. It’s a little rough around the edges in some places, and the grind can be unreal sometimes, but it’s still modern Pokemon Snap which is good enough for me. | Read review |

Hey Poor Player | Josh Speer | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-07-2021 | Despite my issues with the game, I really did enjoy New Pokémon Snap. Even after completing the game’s storyline, there’s still a ton more to do after the credits roll. To this old Pokémon fan, this is a must-own title. If you love photographing wild creatures and exploring a vibrant new region, this is the game for you. And if you really want to feel like you’re a budding photographer, play the game using the optional motion controls, swinging the Switch around like a giant camera. Hobby Consolas | Javier Escribano | 84 / 100 | 04-28-2021 | The gameplay of New Pokémon Snap is the same as in N64, but with more Pokémon, dozens of challenges and a social component of “photo mode” that multiplies its potential. Because of the kind of game it is, it inevitably ends up becoming repetitive, but there’s a lot to discover before that happens, and it’s a beautiful, relaxing retreat if you’re looking for escapism. | Read review |

INDIANTVCZ | Robert Bauer | 7 / 10 | 05-16-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a great break, during which you feel that the world is completely fine, because you are in a line of cute Pokémon. It’s definitely not a game I’d play 100 hours or all day, but dedicate an hour here and there when I’m not in the mood for Zelda or Smash Bros. It sounds just great and I’ll be happy with New Pokémon Snap sometimes come back to take some nice photos and then you don’t turn it on again for two weeks. | Read review |
KeenGamer | Dakota Gordon | 7.5 / 10 | 05-07-2021 | Snap is back—is it better than ever? Roughly 22 years have passed since the debut of this incredibly niche idea, a polar opposite to the RPG classic that spawned Poké-mania in the late ’90s. With so much hindsight (and a thousand more pokémon), there’s no place to go but up for New Pokémon Snap. | Read review |

LevelUp | Pedro Pérez Cesari | 8 / 10 | 05-05-2021 | New Pokémon Snap takes what made the original special, but doesn’t add or changes much. Luis Alamilla | Luis Alamilla | 8.5 / 10 | 05-02-2021 | The long wait for a New Pokemon Snap has been treacherous but in many ways, was worth it. By far, New Pokemon Snap is visually the best-looking Pokemon game on modern platforms with so much personality and characters on display at all times. It truly makes the world of Pokemon come to life which ultimately feels like what a lot of fans want. The addition of new gyroscope controls, fun puzzles to solve and plenty of incentives to replay levels are great. However, I would have loved to see more ways to share my photos with my friends directly through my Switch and not just social media. The scoring system can still at times make no sense in how one picture is scored better than the other which at this point almost feels like a staple of the series. Nevertheless, New Pokemon Snap is a worthwhile game that Pokemon fans are sure to love despite its minor caveats. | Read review |
M3 | P-A Knutsson | 6 / 10 | 05-14-2021 | Oddly enough, much is the same from 1999; you follow a more or less firm path forward and should try to photograph as many pocket monsters as possible before the route reaches its end. Something else that’s strange is that it’s still really fun. At least for a while. Although the photo adventure is more than twice as long as the original and the gameplay moments have evolved, the whole still feels too thin to delight anyone other than Pokémon fans. | Read review |

Nintendo Enthusiast | Chirag Pattni | 9 / 10 | 05-03-2021 | New Pokémon Snap confidently demonstrates why the wait for a sequel was long past due. At every turn, it goes beyond the scope of the original game to provide an experience that’s both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. On-rails photography journeys are enjoyable thanks to a plethora of secrets, fun items to use, and consistently interesting changes to each level. Modern quality-of-life features minimize any potential frustrations with not understanding how to best plan out your runs, while a slew of side quests, online functionality, and postgame bonuses add some meaningful replayability. Though it remains technically imperfect and may not justify its price tag for all players, it provides enough attention to detail to remind us of why we fell in love with Pokémon to begin with. New Pokémon Snap is a welcome return for the spin-off series and one that Pokémon fans shouldn’t skip. | Read review |
Nintendo Life | Jon Cartwright | 8 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | If, like us, you’ve been waiting a significant chunk of your life for a sequel to Pokémon Snap, then you’re in luck; New Pokémon Snap brings back almost everything that made the original special and fleshes it out into a much more elaborate game. This is something you can sink some serious time into and while there are some minor frustrations and pacing issues in the story, playing freely at your own pace is a pure joy. The original has gone down in history possibly as Pokémon’s greatest spinoff, and it may have just been dethroned. | Read review |
NintendoWorldReport | John Rairdin | 7.5 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | It is significantly bigger than the original, and photo editing options in combination with Twitter and Facebook integration make it a somewhat more social experience. While it is easy to say this is the definitive Pokemon Snap experience, I can’t help but find myself wanting something that truly feels new rather than simply more. Noisy Pixel | Azario Lopez | 8 / 10 | 05-03-2021 | New Pokemon Snap is there for fans who wish for a casual Pokemon experience with the only challenge being to take creative pictures of Pokemon. It recaptures much of what the previous entry offered with plenty of new systems and features to add depth, but it sadly doesn’t deliver on the sense of ownership over the pictures that I once felt. It’s all so fleeting in this digital age. Still, there are plenty of beautiful environments and Pokemon to take shots of. I wouldn’t mind waiting another 20 years for a sequel or having this be the last entry altogether. | Read review |

Rapid Reviews UK | Chloe Osborn | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-10-2021 | In 1999, Pokémon Snap was released for the Nintendo 64. One of the first console-based games as a spin off for the Pokémon series, and featuring Pokémon rendered for the first time in real-time 3D, it remains a fond memory for many. It does have some long-game flaws, but in the short term, you’ll be in Nirvana as you see Pokemon left and right and try to get all the best shots of them. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Nic Bunce | 7 / 10 | 05-04-2021 | New Pokémon Snap has a lot going for it. It’s a genuinely endearing game that shutterbugs and Pokémon fans alike will enjoy, and anyone in the middle of that Venn diagram will absolutely love. That love will not be blind to the game’s stark limitations, though. As it stands, it’s a perfectly serviceable game, but some minor tweaks and quality of life improvements such as auto-completing requests you’ve finished, could drastically improve this game’s flow and make it a far more enjoyable experience for everyone. | Read review |
ThisGenGaming | Robby Bisschop | 8 / 10 | 05-04-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a great experience for anyone who’s either a fan of videogame photography or the Pokémon series. If you’re into both (like me) this title is a dream come true. | Read review |
Thumbsticks | Daniel New | 4 / 5 stars | 05-06-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is a game for players exhausted by the franchise’s increasingly complex RPG titles. It’s low-key but rewarding, and its laid back, violence-free approach puts a welcome focus back on the design and behaviour of each Pokémon. | Read review |
Too Much Gaming | Joseph Choi | 7 / 10 | 05-06-2021 | I’m happy to report that New Pokémon Snap improves upon the original game in nearly every respect. It’s filled with well-animated interactions between Pokemon, a wide variety of evolving environments, and over 200 Pokémon to add to your Photodex. Despite all of its quality-of-life improvements, its relaxing vibe, and decent presentation, however, it’s more of an evolution of the concept than a revolution, and soundly geared to younger audiences. I imagine that because of its simple gameplay, it’s not going to satisfy everyone. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Rebecca Stone | 4 / 5 stars | 04-28-2021 | New Pokemon Snap is easy to recommend it to a wide audience. It’s a fun game for Pokemon fans, a worthy sequel for those who enjoyed the original, and a unique experience for those who are looking for something new to pick up and play in short bursts. | Read review |
Unboxholics | Nikos Derlos | Not Recommended | 04-28-2021 | Pokémon Snap did not come to quench the thirst for fans of the main games. What it offers, however, is something equally important to many people out there. It is able to fill a gap in the franchise through a different perspective: it is a journey of relaxation. | Read review |
VG247 | Alex Donaldson | Recommended | 04-28-2021 | If you’re the sort of player who got really mad about the national Pokedex in Sword & Shield, you might also bemoan the level of content here. But I think this is plenty, delivering far more than the original and with a whole lot of replay value – it’s just a shame the developers felt the need to stretch it out artificially to justify what they’ve managed to build. | Read review |
Video Chums | Unknown | 5 / 10 | 05-15-2021 | Pokémon Snap left me in a worried state for the franchise. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Josh Wise | 7 / 10 | 05-10-2021 | Though it comes with a crop of upgrades, and its graphics have been brushed to a smooth shine, what it offers, despite its title, is the joy of the old. | Read review |
Washington Post | Shannon Liao | Not Recommended | 04-28-2021 | It gives the player just enough story and intrigue to press on through a grindy midgame focused on revisiting maps. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Leonardo Faria | 8.5 / 10 | 05-03-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is great. Some of its new gameplay features, such as the four-star photo system, are unnecessarily convoluted and its story couldn’t have been more forgettable. However, this is exactly what we’ve been asking for the past twenty-two years: a bigger, prettier sequel to the 1999 classic, with more areas to explore and more Pokémon to interact with. | Read review |
Wccftech | Rosh Kelly | 8.5 / 10 | 05-06-2021 | New Pokémon Snap offers a great chance to explore the Pokémon world, with beautiful animations and designs, thrilling levels, and a sense of calm throughout. You’ll struggle to not enjoy your time with it. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Cheyenne Clark | 4 / 5 stars | 05-07-2021 | With so many Pokémon to photograph and so many new areas to explore, New Pokémon Snap feels like a worthy successor to the original, if a little simple. It can be challenging at times, but its relaxing gameplay will keep you coming back for more. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Eleanore Blereau | 9 / 10 | 04-28-2021 | New Pokémon Snap is the perfect mix of discovery and escapism that retains its nostalgic feel but in a modern and beautiful Poké-laden package. | Read review |
Worth Playing | Chris “Atom” DeAngelus | 8 / 10 | 05-03-2021 | All in all, New Pokémon Snap delivers exactly what the title promises: a Pokémon Snap that is bigger and more modern, but with a core that’s very similar to the original N64 game. Whether this is a plus or a minus depends on how much you enjoy seeing cute cartoony monsters being adorable. There are few more relaxing and chill games on the Switch, and if you’re looking for something to de-stress after a long day, New Pokémon Snap has you covered. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to figure out how to get this giant turtle monster to yawn…. | Read review |
ZTGD | Anthony Mann | 9.5 / 10 | 06-24-2021 | So it is easy to recommend this to fans of the original game and it is easy to recommend this to fans of Pokémon, but what about people who may have no interest in Pokémon’s main series? Well, if photography is a passion then I think there’s definitely fun to be had here because New Pokémon Snap does feel like a fantasy animal safari where the whole goal is to capture the best photos. The interactions between Pokémon feel natural and while they do things that no animal equivalent does, I think that makes them all the more interesting. New Pokémon Snap is like nothing else on the market and proves that this spin off series should have never been gone for this long. | Read review |
