Maneater's shark feeding frenzy is knowingly imperfect and fun while it lasts, but its extremely short and repetitive.

“The overwhelming impression is that the game doesn’t really know what it’s trying to say, and can’t convincingly pass the mess off as satire. So it would probably be best off saying nothing.”

“In a world where everything is so damn serious, Maneater is a refreshing breath of air. It’s a short, fun, memorable romp through the life of a shark that’s better written than a lot of what comes out to today.”
Jim Hargreaves (TheSixthAxis)

“Maneater is a crazy concept come to life, Tripwire somehow managing to cobble together a silly ShaRkPG that is more than just a ten-minute novelty. There’s no denying it’s an exotic catch, but when it comes to quality open world action games, there’s plenty more fish in the sea.”

33bits | Rubén Rionegro | 80 / 100 | 07-22-2020 | Maneater proposes a new original and fun concept based on controlling a shark. Its RPG-style gameplay is a real surprise and allows us to customize our protagonist in several ways. It has some problems such as a poorly polished fight and the repetitiveness of its approach, but still it is a game worth playing. | Read review |
3DNews | Алексей Лихачев | 6 / 10 | 05-30-2020 | Great idea, mediocre execution. The combat system is too simple and quests are too repetitive – because of that even jumping out of the sea and eating people soon becomes boring. | Read review |

Area Xbox | David Jarquin | 6.7 / 10 | 06-06-2020 | ManEater, although with some bugs and shallow, is an enjoyable adventure with a very original concept. Great level design and art invite you to explore the world of Port Clovis. And if you are a lover of series B movies of sharks you can not stop trying it. | Read review |

BaziCenter | Mohammad Zamani | 6 / 10 | 05-27-2020 | Maneater is very fun to play, but there is no denying that the developers failed to break from repetitiveness. It feels exciting to play as a revenge-seeking shark, but there is also a lot of wasted potential that could have made Maneater a much better game. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Eva Herinkova | 7 / 10 | 06-06-2020 | Maneater is a pretty fun experience, especially if you’re a fan of shark movies like I am, even though it does have its problems. It felt like being placed in Jaws and being told to just go at it and I loved that. I even ended up getting the platinum trophy since I spent so much time exploring the ocean and digging into the collectibles I could find. However, it has its downsides, too. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Gabriel Bogdan | 8 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater surprises in a lot aspects of the game and will please every shark enthusiast out there. Even RPG Fans can go for it, if they can live with a reduced gameplay variety, scope and reduced overall variety, compared to other games in the genre. The humor is great and despite being a short experience, its always fun to play. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Preston Dozsa | 6 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater is an enjoyable action-RPG whose best moments are overshadowed by its bog standard open-world design and lack of variety in missions and enemies. | Read review |
Chalgyr's Game Room | Nick Herber | 7 / 10 | 05-29-2020 | In small doses, Maneater is pretty mindless fun. Exploring is entertaining, there’s enough shiny objects scattered about to keep things interesting and the progression options are nice to see as well. However, the progression path could provide a bit more meaning if the combat and movement were somewhat more refined. Considering the bulk of the time is spent moving and fighting, that is a somewhat severe drawback from what would otherwise had the potential to be a pretty fantastic guilty pleasure. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Charlie Kelly | 8 / 10 | 05-25-2020 | If there’s anything Maneater will be remembered for, it’s the fun and wacky nature that comes with it. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Igone Martínez | Not Recommended | 05-22-2020 | When I watched the premiere trailer, I expected from Maneater a game like Madworld where you earn more points the more gore or bloody deaths you cause. I honestly wanted to find some relief in this video game, playing a powerful shark that takes everyone without ruffling her bangs. Far from my expectation, I've found a game where evolving to ShARkPG is the key and even if it is a predator, it will also have enemies of its size or higher that it must face with good combat strategy. | Read review |

Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 7.5 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater plays its hand early, as the novelty of being an almost unstoppable apex predator thrown into an unforgiving ocean doesn't have much depth to it. What Maneater does have though, is a meaty world worth exploring, a fascinating system of evolution and whip-smart writing that adds colour to your deep blue killing spree. | Read review |
Cultured Vultures | Ashley Bates | 7 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater is a game that, for the most part, lives up to its potential, offering something a bit different than other games. DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 7 / 10 | 05-25-2020 | With an uncommon goal to rip and tear your way through members of the aquatic universe, and ultimately survive the oncoming dangers of daring hunters, Maneater’s delightful display of devious delectable’s will leave an insatiable blood lust, and massive appetite for more. | Read review |
Destructoid | Chris Carter | 7 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater squanders some of its potential, but it's perfect for a rainy weekend when you're craving something original. Digital Chumps | Alex Tudor | 8 / 10 | 11-13-2018 | Maneater perfectly embodies the fantasy of being a super-powerful shark to great effect, even if there are some small technical issues and rough-around-the-edges gameplay decisions. DualShockers | Logan Moore | 6 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater is an enjoyable open-world romp that is just a bit too straightforward and contains more than a handful of bugs and performance issues. | Read review |

EGM | Michael Goroff | 8 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater constantly blurs the line between sadistic mass murder simulator and clever satire, while also managing to be as fun as any human-based open-world game. Chris Parnell's narration can get a little repetitive, as can the missions, and the camera could use a little work, but it's all a matter of context. It's a wild reversal of ego, an experience that is both completely freeing and oppressive at the same time. Stare into the dead eyes of the shark, and the shark stares into you. | Read review |
Expansive | Brad Baker | Recommended | 05-26-2020 | Maneater was a real genuine surprise for me. I guess it kind of leans into that long debated scientific anecdote – that we might know more about space than we do our own shores. It seems baffling, perhaps improbable, but Maneater is a game I had no knowledge of, yet it’s a title I’m grateful I’ve spent time exploring and playing. Plus it feels good playing as a shark for once. Sharks are amazing creatures, even if this game proves they’re also incredibly scary! | Read review |
Explosion Network | Dylan Blight | 6 / 10 | 05-23-2020 | You can easily boot up Maneater and crush your jaws into the finish line in an afternoon and get some solid laughs out of the revenge story and silly antics. Just be aware of the current technical issues and glitches that are keeping this beached as for the time being. | Read review |
FingerGuns | Greg Hicks | 8 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | It may only be single player, but treat it more like the Witcher than a party game: you are the shark, this is your time to rise as queen of the ocean. It may have a slightly bumpy start, as most games of this style do, but once it opens up the world is your… well, ocean. That sounds less dramatic when it’s literal. | Read review |
Flickering Myth | Shaun Munro | 6.5 / 10 | 05-24-2020 | Maneater is a game which knows its limitations and refreshingly gets to the point fast, serving up a streamlined – if unpolished – marine-themed open-world RPG. | Read review |

GameCrate | Angelo D'Argenio | 6.8 / 10 | 05-28-2020 | Maneater is a game that could have been good but was too obsessed with forcing players to interact with its low points to make its high points shine. | Read review |
GameGrin | Gary Sheppard | 8 / 10 | 05-31-2020 | With more in the game than the concept might suggest, this is a fun to play title and exceeded my initial expectations of how the game would be. GamePitt | Rob Pitt | 8 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Despite the performance and realism issues I had with the game, Maneater is an incredibly fun and satisfying slaughter-fest shaRkPG experience. You must eat to grow, grow to fight, fight to survive, and survive to rip your mother’s murderer to pieces! The visuals are incredible, the gore is glorious, the story was funny whilst holding everything together, and the range of armour and abilities helps create a unique experience in this Adult-orientated Feeding Frenzy-a-like. Gamer Escape | Mike Thomas | 7 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Considering the largely uncharted waters (sorry) of the shark simulator genre, it is hard to fault Maneater for its flaws. On the other hand, open world design has been a staple of gaming for over a decade and it is a shame to see such repetitive quest design. | Read review |

GamesBeat | Jason Wilson | 81 / 100 | 05-22-2020 | I would've liked a bit more clarity on the storyline quests, and it would've been nice if Maneater would say a bit more about the imperiled state of sharks in our world. GameSpew | Chris McMullen | 5 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | The game has its moments, and just roaming around is good for a couple of minutes of watery entertainment. But its clunky combat and repetitive, tedious gameplay means that, despite its toothy protagonist, Maneater lacks any bite. | Read review |

GameZone | Cade Onder | 8 / 10 | 06-01-2020 | Playing Maneater, I personally had a lot of fun going around playing as a huge shark controlling the ocean despite being repetitive. In the end, though, I did enjoy the game greatly with its stunning visuals and fun game mechanics. | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Eric Hauter | 7.4 / 10 | 06-05-2020 | Maneater is a solid first entry in a new open world RPG franchise. Repetitive missions and some fairly severe framerate issues hold the game back a bit, but overall Maneater is a good bit of summertime gaming fluff. You can't beat the feeling of chomping people at the beach, and Maneater provides just what gamers are looking for – fun carnage with just enough structure to keep players motivated. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Martin Patiño | 7 / 10 | 05-24-2020 | Maneater is a pretty decent take on the open-world action-adventure RPG formula that GTA has popularized. It's definitely worth trying for fans of GTA-style games who are looking for something especially different. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Devo Deaves | 80 / 100 | 05-24-2020 | Maneater is a fun aquatic adventure with more to keep players engaged than it initially seems, it kept me hooked throughout and has enough daft character to bait me back in for a future play-through. Hey Poor Player | Francis DiPersio | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-26-2020 | With its unique premise and a great sense of humor, Maneater’s 12-hour campaign is a fun feeding frenzy while it lasts. However, the game’s occasionally repetitive quests, coupled with its spotty performance, make it feel more like a quick and dirty trip to Long John Silver’s than a bountiful seafood feast for starving RPG fans. Player.it | Graziano Salini | 6 / 10 | 06-01-2020 | Maneater is a slightly greedy shark who hasn't quite figured out how to swim yet. The title of Tripwire makes decent use of its concept to offer a game world full of humor and hilarity while failing in other points of view. Commanding a shark is fun in small sips and in order to complete the title will be necessary to make peace over and over again with the system of movement and fighting, all this, inserted within a playful paradigm twenty years old, closes the circle with a "if you really like sharks this is the game for you ...". | Read review |
Player2.net.au | Stephen del Prado | Recommended | 05-25-2020 | Tripwire has crafted a fantastically balanced experience that knows when enough is enough and is genuinely funny, something many games aim for but so few succeed in reaching. PlayStation LifeStyle | Chandler Wood | 8.5 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater’s bite comes from its stunning underwater animations, comedic notes spread throughout the game, and the fact that you get to play an entire game as a goddamn shark. There simply isn’t anything else like it, even if it does follow some of the more rote open-world playbook rules when it comes to progression and collectibles. A choppy framerate in intense sequences is really one of the only things holding the experience back, but like a fisherman without a hand—or a leg—it doesn’t stop me from heading back to the open water for more. Am I still scared of sharks? Hell yeah, more than ever, but at least now I can be scares and fascinates me. | Read review |

Press Start | James Berich | 7 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | It's hard to deny that Maneater has colossal potential – though the lack of mission variety and some simplistic combat does lend it to feeling repetitious as time goes on. Putting these flaws aside, however, Maneater deserves kudos for an undeniably unique premise and laying a solid foundation for a franchise that developer Tripwire should almost certainly pursue. | Read review |
pressakey.com | Tobias Heinen | Not Recommended | 06-16-2020 | The humor really is the most fun for me, because there is not much playfulness offered here. The missions are monotonous, the performance on consoles is insufficient and I still had to struggle with the camera even after nine hours, as there is no option for fixed targeting of prey. But I don't want to leave this ship in too bad a mood. The graphics are quite respectable and there are some points where you can see better ambitions. It's great that there can be such wacky games and I hope for a more polished and interesting second part. | Read review |
Push Square | Sammy Barker | 7 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | You may be tired of open world collectathons, but Maneater bites back with more than enough novelty to make the format feel as fresh as Port Clovis' well-populated oceans. It honestly feels like a first in a genre and a way to bring back an arcade-like feel to games. Throw a score counter at the top, and I could easily see this as a cabinet you’d throw quarters into. I’ve seen the game run far better on more powerful hardware, and it’s incredible, so it’s a shame that the base PS4 suffers so much. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Rob Gordon | 4 / 5 stars | 06-12-2020 | Maneater's sluggish start soon makes way for a ridiculous and extremely fun shark 'em up gaming experience that homes in on its B-movie roots. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Branislav Kohút | 7.5 / 10 | 05-26-2020 | You are dangerous. Use your shark teeth to spread terror and have fun to kill everything in your way! | Read review |
Shacknews | Greg Burke | 9 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Tripwire Interactive has managed to capture what it feels like to be Jaws, right down to jumping out of the water, landing on a boat, and chomping away at the hunters on it. That in and of itself is a momentous achievement to accomplish. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | Christian Pepito | 8.5 / 10 | 05-27-2020 | Maneater is enjoyable at best. It’s the kind of game that doesn’t require a lot of thinking and just lets you enjoy as a shark along with the hilarious know-it-all-of-shark narrator. So here are the things you need to know to enjoy Maneater: turn off your brain, do not be picky with your food, and just evolve into the Mega Shark. | Read review |

Slant Magazine | Aaron Riccio | 3 / 5 stars | 05-22-2020 | The game's campiness doesn't extend to the shark combat, which flounders as a result of it mostly hinging on button-mashing. | Read review |
Softpedia | Cosmin Vasile | 6 / 10 | 06-09-2020 | Unfortunately, the countless technical issues, the lack of quality content, the clumsy controls and stupid AI turn Maneater into a mediocre experience, which cannot be recommended in its current state. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Domenico Musicò | 7 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater is a one of a kind RPG that revolves around the growth of a shark in search of his revenge. Besides its technical limitations and repetitiveness, Maneater is a lot of fun. | Read review |
Stevivor | Steve Wright | 7.5 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | While Maneater is certainly a title that works for me in terms of its humour and an engaging core gameplay loop, its graphic nature means it’s not going to be for everyone. If you don’t mine a little gore — okay, make that a lot of gore — this unique experience should be right up your alley. | Read review |
TechRaptor | Alex Santa Maria | 6.5 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | There's no game that makes you feel like a shark quite as well as Maneater, but a shoddy open world structure and repetitive missions make it little more than a quick rush of adrenaline. | Read review |
The Digital Fix | Andrew Shaw | 9 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Once Maneater sinks its jaws into you, you will be entertained from start to finish. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Claudio Magistrelli | 7.5 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater feels like a b-movie and it's not ashamed of it. The atmosphere is undoubtedly its best value and, if you wanna appreciate it, you must avoid looking too much at the details. The idea on which the game is based, after all, is that fish are smarter than humans, so Maneater rightly treat us accordingly. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Jim Hargreaves | 6 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater is a crazy concept come to life, Tripwire somehow managing to cobble together a silly ShaRkPG that is more than just a ten-minute novelty. There's no denying it's an exotic catch, but when it comes to quality open world action games, there's plenty more fish in the sea. | Read review |
ThisGenGaming | Justin Oneil | 8 / 10 | 05-25-2020 | Maneater, in my opinion, is one of the surprise video game hits of 2020. While the mission variety runs out quick, I somehow never got tired of just swimming around and munching on things. Using the nutrients from doing that to upgrade my shark in new ways was addictive and going back to newly opened up areas was enjoyable. | Read review |
Thumbsticks | Callum Williams | 3 / 5 stars | 05-25-2020 | Maneater really does do what it says on the tin. It’s a hyper-violent, super fun and wonderfully tongue in cheek shark simulator that lets players live out their fantasy of becoming the ocean’s most notorious predator. Yet, it’s beyond that where Maneater struggles, as its repetitive missions and frequent padding prevent it from sustaining its 10-hour runtime. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Tom Hopkins | 3 / 5 stars | 05-22-2020 | If you’re after a big dumb shark game, Maneater will scratch that itch. The quality of the gameplay and some of its RPG mechanics might make you wish there was some more depth and variety to it all though. | Read review |
Unboxholics | Λεωνίδας Στραβάκος | Recommended | 06-01-2020 | Maneater is an unusual game, which undoubtedly deserves a place in your collection. Despite the usual flaws that plague most open world games, Maneater is an addictive and fun experience thanks to its varied environments, the customization, the battles with other marine creatures and humans, and its exploration. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Unknown | 7.6 / 10 | 06-23-2020 | Maneater takes a while to get going, but it eventually feels super satisfying to munch your way through your foes thanks to the chaotic and brutal abilities at your disposal. Who wouldn’t want to be a shark with an electrifying bite, right? With a creatively fun world to swim through and some pretty epic shark-fuelled set pieces, it has never been more fun to be a shark in a video game. Eat that, Jaws Unleashed… | Read review |
Video Chums | Trey Griffeth | 6 / 10 | 06-06-2020 | Ultimately, Maneater is a passable distraction. It features a decent bit of fun with a surprisingly heartfelt plot but that's about it. With long gaps between major releases in this part of the year, Maneater will provide some entertainment for those looking to fill the void. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Joshua Wise | 7 / 10 | 05-23-2020 | The chief pleasures on offer are those of the power fantasy and of the newly burgeoning subgenre that we might call the zoological misadventure. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Leonardo Faria | 9 / 10 | 05-24-2020 | Maneater is a game made by people who knew the limitations imposed by their budget, the current gen of consoles, and the overall nature of open world games. They managed to craft an incredibly polished murderfest experience that makes you want to kill everything in sight due to how fun its gameplay is. | Read review |
Wccftech | Nathan Birch | 6 / 10 | 05-22-2020 | Maneater isn't exactly Jaws, but it isn't Sharknado either. Crunching up hapless beachgoers and exploring underwater wonders is fun, even if the game's bite is often blunted by clunky controls, repetitive missions, and a myriad of technical issues. Proceed with caution, but if you're into sharks and can keep your expectations in check, Maneater's treacherous waters may be worth wading into. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Todd Rigney | 4 / 5 stars | 05-22-2020 | Although it's hindered by performance issues, Maneater allows you to gleefully live out your wildest (and perhaps bloodiest) killer shark revenge fantasies. What's more, the game's dark sense of humor means you don't have to feel guilty about the carnage that ensues. | Read review |
