33bits | Rubén Rionegro | 85 / 100 | 10-06-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is one of the most faithful and worked remakes ever seen, at the level of the big productions. Its magnificent plot and cinematics are very powerful and will make us continue playing to know more about it. In contrast, the gunplay and driving are not very good and can complicate things. In general, a game that we can not miss. | Read review |
3DNews | Михаил Пономарев | 8 / 10 | 10-03-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a great remake with a good drama sufficiency, well directed action and intense gameplay. | Read review |

Attack of the Fanboy | Dean James | 4 / 5 stars | 10-06-2020 | As the title infers, Mafia: Definitive Edition is indeed the definitive version of the classic game, this time with completely redone visuals and updated gameplay that makes the game feel like it could have released today as a brand new game and few would have known the difference. | Read review |
AusGamers | Kosta Andreadis | 8.2 / 10 | 09-25-2020 | Underneath the beauty, there’s a morality tale that slowly unfolds amid the sometimes overblown spectacle. An element that was present in the original but feels more prevalent and potent here. The ending backs an even bigger gut punch this time around. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Kasra Karimi Tar | 8 / 10 | 10-08-2020 | If you look at Mafia: Definitive Edition as an action adventure game that released in 2020, you can have some great moments with it, although it’s not flawless, but if you have already experience the original Mafia game back in 2002, you’ll probably feel that something is missing. The Definitive Edition looks much, much better visually and packs some cool new gameplay mechanics, but it is just not the good old Mafia that everyone fell in love with. | Read review |
Bazimag | Sina Golab Zade | 8 / 10 | 09-26-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition may be too short with today’s open world games standards to justify that price tag but it’s a full-on remake of one of the best gangster stories ever told in all forms of media. It has enough surprises for old fans and it’s modern enough for the newer generation of gamers to take a leap of faith and buy it. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Curro Medina | Recommended | 09-30-2020 | It is not often that we have experiences of this level in games oriented to a single player, as far as the story and technical power are concerned. Mafia presents a story with such exceptional and rarely seen quality that it is well worth play. If you’re a fan of criminal thrillers and gangster movies, as well as coverage and driving shooters, Mafia: Definitive Edition is for you. | Read review |
COGconnected | Jake Hill | 75 / 100 | 09-29-2020 | That makes the Definitive Edition something akin to a shot-for-shot remake. It manages to capture the charm of the original, imbues it with modern technology, and freezes all of its flaws in a sepia toned amber. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 8 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a stunning recreation of a classic game, adding competent gameplay upgrades and a polished recreation of its plot. As solid as the overhaul may be though, it doesn’t do much else to evolve the experience beyond the bare essentials. Not that you heard that from me, capisce? | Read review |
Cubed3 | Chris Leebody | 7 / 10 | 10-15-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a memorable and excellent story that does justice to both its original groundbreaking title and the movies it is paying homage to. The character and story of protagonist Tommy Angelo is one that is easy to get invested in and this world of Lost Heaven exudes the charm and atmosphere of 1930s New York. Excellent pacing and plot over the course of 10-12 hours mean it will keep anyone hooked. That said, it feels like a game pushing this hardware to its limit and the limitations do catch up with it in a lot of ways. Anyone who has a PC capable of playing the game would be well advised to maybe opt for that platform. Additionally, some unnecessary bugs and controls that can be difficult on a console controller sour the experience somewhat. However, there are not many alternative titles of this genre and Mafia: Definitive Edition certainly delivers a rip-roaring tale for those who wish to experience it. | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 8 / 10 | 10-06-2020 | Mafia Definitive Edition has raised the stakes. It’s a series that has essentially gone to war on itself by rebuilding, redefining, and reintroducing its stellar narrative to an entirely new generation of gamers. As someone whose family thinks of The Godfather Trilogy as a holy testimony to Italian heritage, Mafia delivers an astounding performance on all fronts from gameplay, presentation, design and delivery. | Read review |
Destructoid | Brett Makedonski | 9 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | All this time, the first Mafia was the best of the trio. It just took a phenomenal effort from Hangar 13 to do it justice with Mafia: Definitive Edition. This feels like the rare necessary remake that elevates and builds upon the original. It’s truly an offer you can’t refuse. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Harvard L. | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-25-2020 | Hangar 13 have done an amazing job in modernising Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven into a truly powerful narrative experience, one which I hope that fans of the original will be pleasantly surprised by. | Read review |

EGM | Michael Goroff | 8 / 10 | 09-30-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is the best of both worlds. Its updated graphics bring Lost Heaven and its inhabitants to life without burdening them with modern game design elements. While the characters themselves haven’t aged as well, Mafia: Definitive Edition, though based on a game that’s nearly 20 years old, feels more refreshing than most open-world games. | Read review |

Flickering Myth | Shaun Munro | 8 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | If Mafia: Definitive Edition‘s gameplay hasn’t moved far beyond 2002, it’s still a gorgeous, reverent glow-up which should satisfy fans both old and new. | Read review |
Game Informer | Jeff Cork | 5.5 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Faithful almost to a fault, Hangar 13’s remake puts a glossy finish on a title that is fundamentally musty by contemporary standards | Read review |
Game Revolution | Michael Leri | 2.5 / 5 stars | 09-30-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is tedious enough as it is by 2020 standards. Clunky gunplay and lousy vehicle handling make the shootouts as frustrating as the getaway drive. The promising setup can’t avoid getting whacked either as it disappoints through its inability to meaningfully execute on its multiple beats. The talented cast and better realized 1930s world outdo its 2002 counterpart, but the rest of its blunders come together and result in an offer that’s relatively easy to refuse. | Read review |
Gameblog | Camille Allard | 7 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Especially if you know and love the original game, Mafia Definitive Edition is pure joy. We follow the adventures of Tommy Angelo like we would follow those of a character of a good move form Coppola. Beyond nostalgia, we take part in a wonderful ganster story. Despite every issue the game suffers at the moment (random freezes, crashes…) and some terrible optimizations on PC and PS4, it’s still a captivating game, but it’s hard to ignore its flaws. | Read review |
GameCrate | Leo Parrill | 8.3 / 10 | 10-12-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition improves on the original in every way. It does this by telling a remarkable story bolstered by beautifully detailed visuals and excellent performances. The outdated mission design and gameplay keep it from ever feeling truly modern however. | Read review |
Gamefa | Aria Moghadam | 8 / 10 | 09-29-2020 | Mafia Definitive Edition is one of the best remake titles of this generation. The whole vibe has been captured pretty well and it really throws you back in time and brings back lots of good memories. Movie-like cutscenes, top notch voice acting and great character design, make you enjoy the story even more than the original title. There are issues with combat system and enemy AI here and there, but you better check it out nonetheless. | Read review |
GameMAG | Евгений Иванцов | 8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | We have a solid remake, that simultaneously stays true to the original game, but also gives it a fresh coat of paint. Some much-needed changes are made to both the narrative and the gameplay, even if not all of them will sit right with the core fans. Mafia: Definitive Edition is a great way to experience one of the best games in it’s genre in a completely new light. | Read review |

Gamersky | 棘皮动物的野望 | 8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Mafia Definitive Edition is a remarkable example that a remake game should show to gamers. From graphic to story-telling, this game develop a lot compare to the original game. But there are few glitches that need to be fixed. | Read review |

GameSpew | Richard Seagrave | 8 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | Even with its faults, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a fantastic remake of the original game. And while the gameplay isn’t perfect, it’s solid enough to keep you entertained. | Read review |
GameSpot | Richard Wakeling | 6 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Dated gameplay drags down this impressive remake of an 18-year-old classic. | Read review |
GameWatcher | Marcello Perricone | 9 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | A real remake that thoroughly updates an 18-year-old title into a proper next-gen game, and actually makes it better than the original. | Read review |
GameZone | Cade Onder | 6 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | Like Mafia 3, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a game that works as a good movie. It’s not a game that works as a good game. It’s buggy, it’s clunky, and is often just frustrating or unsatisfying. Hopefully, Hanger 13 is able to learn more lessons from this game because I’m not sure a fourth Mafia game can survive this sort of treatment. | Read review |

GamingTrend | Ron Burke | 90 / 100 | 09-24-2020 | Hangar 13 has retouched every single aspect of the original Mafia, expanding the story, refining the gameplay, and wrapping it with an absolutely phenomenal new look and sound, elevating it to an entirely new and modern level. It’s good to be part of the family once more. | Read review |

Geeks Under Grace | Malachi Key | 5.5 / 10 | 11-12-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a beautiful retelling of a cult classic, but struggles to stand on its own against a game market that’s left it behind. | Read review |
Generación Xbox | Juan Jesús | 8.3 / 10 | 09-25-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a clear example of a well done remake, which adds new features and a magnificent technical section. All this maintaining the essence of the original title. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Chris White | 8.5 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition oozes style and substance, harking back to a time when story was everything. The gameplay can be a little clumsy, but entwined with these awkward moments come excitement. | Read review |
GRYOnline.pl | Krystian Smoszna | 8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Time wasn’t gentle to the original Mafia; a remake was a neccesity. I’m glad I could experience this story once more. I completed the game with pleasure, admiring the recreated Lost Heaven, and some really nice graphics. The sequels have nothing on this remaster, and even though some elements could use more polish, this is most definitely a must-play! | Read review |
Guardian | Phil Iwaniuk | 3 / 5 stars | 09-30-2020 | This is a gripping tale of crime families, sharp shooting and sharper suits – but has this remaster lost some of Mafia’s charm? | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Sam Spyrison | 3.5 / 5 stars | 09-28-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition’s gorgeous open world is weakened by its mediocre campaign and flat combat mechanics. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | David Martinez | 85 / 100 | 09-22-2020 | This Definitive Edition is a perfect example of what every remake should be. It keeps the original storyline, great characters and style, but improves every technical aspect, adds new gameplay mechanics (such as hand to hand combat or motorbikes) and deepens the story. It still feels like a Martin Scorsese movie. | Read review |
Hynerd.it | Matteo Rossi | 9 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | Mafia Definitive Edition completes the required task: the rejuvenation of a perfect game weighed down by the weight of the years. The touch of Hangar 13 is absolutely not invasive, but rather enhances the innumerable qualities of a video game cult. | Read review |

IGN Italy | Davide Mancini | 8.2 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a clever, stylish and faithful remake of a cult game, which 18 years later, is still powerful lesson of how to tell a story in an open world. Hangar 13 did a great job rebuilding the city and the atmosphere with a modern touch, the story is still great and compelling, while the gameplay sometimes feels a little bit too old. | Read review |
IGN Spain | David Soriano | 8.5 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Despite the lack of innovation or novelties that would have added something to the experience while respecting the structure of the original, returning to Lost Heaven with this quality has been an offer that we could not refuse and neither should you. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Jeremy Carr | 4.5 / 5 stars | 09-26-2020 | With this Definitive Edition, players can now play all three Mafia games together giving the player many hours inside the world these teams created. I highly recommend this game to new and older players alike. | Read review |
INDIANTVCZ | Filip Kraucher | 8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | The Definitive Edition may not be exactly the same Mafia from 2002, but that’s why this game works excelently. Improved gameplay elements, including beautiful City of The Lost Heaven graphics, are just amazing. Arguments such as: excellent acting performances, great voiceover and with a few exceptions, good balanced gameplay, should be enough to get the Definitive Edition into your gamer’s crosshair. Lovers of the original Mafia will enjoy the classic with the new visuals. And those who missed the game 18 years ago have a great opportunity to experience the entire original story in a modern design. | Read review |
Jump Dash Roll | Derek Johnson | 8 / 10 | 10-02-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition maintains its source material’s amazing story, adds some solid gameplay and brings the graphics into the 21st century for an overall experience that’s one of the few remakes that is genuinely worth a purchase. | Read review |
KeenGamer | Tristan Zelden | 8 / 10 | 09-30-2020 | Yet another ground-up remake of a classic game, but our review of Mafia: Definitive Edition shows that it does not just fall in line with the current trend. Hangar 13 comes back to the roots of its series with a heavy emphasis on a linear, compelling story about a man going from a poor cab driver to a ruthless, successful mobster. | Read review |
LevelUp | Pedro Pérez Cesari | 7.3 / 10 | 09-30-2020 | The definitive edition of Mafia isn’t perfect, but the experience is charming thanks to its ability captures the soul of an exciting era to tell us one of the best crime stories in video games. The experience is enough to reinvigorate a game loved by many, but it falls short when it comes to fulfil its full potential. | Read review |
Merlin’in Kazanı | Alparslan Gürlek | 75 / 100 | 09-25-2020 | It would be great without some “engineering” problems. But i still can’t say “this remake is bad”. Don Salieri sends his regards. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | Nick Gillett | 7 / 10 | 10-05-2020 | A good looking and competent retread of a second rate original, which improves on everything from the graphics to the driving model, whilst maintaining the game’s cinematic essence. | Read review |

NoesPaisparaFrikis | Agustín Raluy | 9.3 / 10 | 11-09-2020 | For all those who were lucky enough to enjoy the original title in its day, this edition will allow you to once again enjoy the adventure of Tommy Angelo with a finish at the level of the best AAA of today. For those who never did … Mafia: Definitive Edition is emerging as one of the essential titles of this 2020, either independently or accompanying its sequels in the Mafia Trilogy compilation that has also gone on sale. A game that will captivate you with its finish, but that will make you fall in love with the story and its characters. An offer you don’t want to refuse. | Read review |
Noisy Pixel | Azario Lopez | 8 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is genuinely one of the best remakes of this generation. It gets so much right in terms of staying true to the source material and preserving what makes it so awesome. Sadly, that only ends up hurting it due to a dated mission structure and poor AI. Still, it was fantastic to be able to play such an updated version of the classic. | Read review |
Oyungezer Online | Oğuz Erdoğan | 7.5 / 10 | 09-30-2020 | If you want to start Mafia series from scratch, Mafia: Definitive Edition is the way to go. It really helps re-living the nostalgia of the first game. | Read review |

PlayStation LifeStyle | Staff Reviewer | 8 / 10 | 10-06-2020 | I’m going to level with you, reader: I went into Mafia Definitive Edition expecting to be underwhelmed. What I ended up playing was far-and-away, infinitely better than I was expecting, featuring fantastic storytelling, compelling, yet immensely flawed characters (in a good way), and a world that is teeming with life. You don’t have to be a fan of the original game in order to feel like a member of the family. Don’t worry! There’s more than enough hot lead to go around. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Garri Bagdasarov | 8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is the best Mafia to date. With an amazing story and gorgeous visuals, Hanger 13 have done a great job at remaking a cult classic. Polygon | Carolyn Petit | Not Recommended | 09-24-2020 | In 2002, the original Mafia may have felt like an epic, but in 2020, Mafia: Definitive Edition feels more like a quaint mafioso side story. “Small-time,” as Tommy describes one of Don Salieri’s operations. | Read review |

Press Start | Toby Berger | 8 / 10 | 09-25-2020 | Hangar 13’s remake of Mafia is great. The story is as interesting as ever, and only minor technical issues take away from what is otherwise a welcome reintroduction to Tommy Angelo and the Salieri crew. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Bruno Henrique Vinhadel | 85 / 100 | 10-02-2020 | An excellent remake that provides an updated experience for one of the most captivating games of its time. Mafia: Definitive Edition is the perfect opportunity for fans and non-fans of the franchise to enjoy the beginning of the series in the best possible way, with incredible visuals. However, there are still problems that could have had a better rework, like a simplified gameplay in several points and an underused map. | Read review |
Push Square | Liam Croft | 7 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | You’ll be hard-pressed to find a remake more faithful than Mafia: Definitive Edition. It pays a great deal of respect to the source text with excellent cutscene direction, voice acting, and a cast of characters you can’t help but fall in love with. The game definitely shows its age with frustrating controls and vehicle handling, but the next story beat is enough of an excuse to continue pressing forward. Mafia: Definitive Edition’s narrative and everything that comes with it holds up to this day, and it’s one worth revisiting even if you know it like the back of your hand. | Read review |

Sirus Gaming | Erickson Melchor | 8.5 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | For series veterans and first-timers, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a labor of love for more than just the original game, but for the Mafia community whose support made this game possible. Series veterans will also take note of the changes in the story. The changes aren’t groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, just the framing of some story elements have been changed to make the story more in line with the current series of games. This is yet another amazing remake that fully embraces many of the things that made the original so special to so many people. | Read review |
Softpedia | Cosmin Vasile | 7.5 / 10 | 09-28-2020 | The hardcore fans of the original will find a lot to nit-pick. But they can return to the original, to remember how archaic it is, or can they try to beat the game in classic mode, “enjoying” the quirks of the original recipe. Despite the criticism, we have to admit that Hangar 13 managed to take an 18 years old game and make it work in 2020, without crushing its soul. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Martin Černický | 85 / 100 | 09-30-2020 | Mafia: Defnitive Edition is an excellent replacement for the original game for those who missed it back when it came out, but it shouldn’t disappoint the diehard fans of the original either. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Paolo Sirio | 7.8 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Mafia Definitive Edition is an ambitious undertaking, partially mined by glitches and lack of game progress from Mafia III but faithfully remaking the original game and adding nuances that surprisingly keep staying loyal to 2002’s masterpiece. | Read review |
Stevivor | Ben Salter | 8.5 / 10 | 09-25-2020 | It presents as a modern game but retains the essence of an old one, and it’s that combination that well and truly entrenches the original Mafia, now reborn, as the best in the series. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Gabriele Barducci | 8.3 / 10 | 09-24-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remake done with plenty of passion, and the charisma it oozes shows it. Hangar 13 rebuilt a great classic without losing track of the original work. Lost Heaven is a shining jewel and there’s plenty of fun to be had. Character animations and the driving system can be a bit wonky sometimes, but those are minor issues in what is overall a great remake. | Read review |
TrueGaming | خالد العيسى | 7.5 / 10 | 10-01-2020 | The remake takes good care of the story with new cutscenes and dialogues that brings the Italian mafia vibe to life, although gameplay-wise the experience could have been much better. | Read review |
Unboxholics | Λεωνίδας Στραβάκος | Recommended | 09-30-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a great remake. Hagar 13 treated it with respect, staying true to the original material, while bringing it to 2020 with a much-deserved technical revamp. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Unknown | 8.6 / 10 | 09-30-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition offers a thrilling action-packed gangster tale that is only really let down by some occasionally clunky controls. The remake itself is top notch, with the story delivering the same gritty tale but adding additional sequences to flesh it out, the mission design more tightly refined to offer more excitement and a balanced difficulty, and the visuals outstanding throughout with Lost Heaven feeling more believable and lived in than ever before. Hangar 13 have done a really great job in re-imagining the game whilst maintaining its roots and it’s sure to please both series veterans and complete newcomers. | Read review |

Wccftech | Dave Aubrey | 8 / 10 | 10-02-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a complete remake of a classic crime game. It looks better than almost any other open-world crime sim you’ll see this generation and has a story that’ll keep you engaged to the end. It might not be the most revolutionary or innovative title in the genre, but it’ll certainly keep you playing. This is an excellent story to play over the course of the weekend, and you’re almost certain to be recommending it to your friends once you’re done. | Read review |

Worth Playing | Andreas Salmen | 8 / 10 | 10-09-2020 | Mafia: Definitive Edition is a remarkable reimaging of the original title that flexes its muscles in graphical fidelity and storytelling but falls flat in other areas. While I fully enjoyed my time with it, its mediocre third-person shooting mechanics, abysmal AI, and erratic difficulty can sometimes be a test of perseverance. It is a reminder of the rather old game buried under the shiny new graphical improvements. It is an impressive retelling of an open-world classic, and it exceeded my expectations on that front. Some of its shortcomings are easily overshadowed by what the title does well.
