Journey to the Savage Planet is funny, colorful, and full of surprises, though combat offers very little challenge and the parody can grow tiresome.

33bits | Rubén Rionegro | 85 / 100 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the savage planet brings back to life those good feelings left by the Metroid Prime saga at the time, and does so with a touch of absurd humour that feels great. We’ll have several areas to explore and scan thoroughly, although it’s a bit frustrating to feel lost at first and not be able to get your bearings. The co-operative is a very interesting addition, although it’s not really designed in the best of ways. If you like exploration and adventure games, don’t hesitate to give it a try. | Read review |
3DNews | Алексей Лихачев | 8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | A great colorful adventure that’s especially fun if you are playing it with your friend. | Read review |

Areajugones | Ramón Baylos | 8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a title whose greatest virtue is to foster a constant sensation of discovery in the player. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Diego Perez | 3.5 / 5 stars | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is absolutely dripping with charm and personality, but the repetitive nature of the exploration and the stiff combat hold it back from being truly great. | Read review |
AusGamers | Kosta Andreadis | 8.8 / 10 | 01-28-2020 | At a glance Journey to the Savage Planet might have the air of an action or survival game, which is a fair assumption to make when seeing its first-person viewpoint and main character walking around with ray-gun in hand. And sure, this is a well we visit far too often at AusGamers, but Journey to the Savage Planet is more Metroid Prime with light combat or even Super Mario 64 than No Man’s Sky. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Farnood Samie Yousefi | 7 / 10 | 01-31-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet takes around 10 to 12 hours to complete, and you’ll come across some neat gameplay ideas along the way, although nothing is that special. | Read review |
Bazimag | Mahdi Eftekhari | 7 / 10 | 02-08-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a unique game and some of its shortcomings stem from this uniqueness. The biggest problems are a simple story and lackluster combat mechanics but the sense of exploration, great visuals and a good use of music and sound effects keeps players from stopping the Journey to this Savage Planet. | Read review |
But Why Tho? | Kate Sanchez | 9.5 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Overall Journey to the Savage Planet is a lot of fun, and the open-world serves up a place for you to spend hours in. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Elliot Attard | 8 / 10 | 01-28-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet borrows from a bunch of different titles and genres but combines them in a way that makes a unique and engaging experience. The game is a testament to how a focused vision backed up by a talented team is a winning formula for game design. I found the game captivating, enthralling, exciting and wondrous. It’s a game I won’t soon forget and intend to return back to with a coop partner for another session of otherworldly exploration, humorous shenanigans and punting Pufferbirds across the gorgeous landscape. | Read review |

Destructoid | Jordan Devore | 8.5 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet was such a fun way to kick off the decade, and I’m going to bring it up at the end of the year when people inevitably begin asking about the overlooked gems of 2020. Digital Chumps | Nathaniel Stevens | 8 / 10 | 11-02-2017 | Overall, with all its gameplay design simplicity on the surface, Journey to the Savage Planet still held some fun discoveries along the way that was drenched in short stints of tongue/cheek humor. It does bring a solid adventure and the fact that you can co-op with a friend helps to keep it all fresh and fun. | Read review |

EGM | Michael Goroff | 8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet’s greatest quality is that it respects its players. Perfectly paced, genuinely charming, and rewardingly explorable, developer Typhoon Studios’ debut is a love letter to thoughtful game design and the ancient art of fun over function. If you grew up loving 3D platformers and games with worlds that felt bigger than they actually were, Journey to the Savage Planet will make you feel like you’re coming home. | Read review |

Gameblog | Jonathan Bushle | 8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a very good avdenture game, with a lot of humor and a great design. Overall gameplay is cool despite a quite linear progression. | Read review |
Gamefa | Saeed Aghababaie | 8 / 10 | 02-03-2020 | For me, Journey to the Savage Planet feels like a mixture of “Ratchet and Clank” with “No Man’s Sky” in a good way! Everything in the game is well placed and it’s really one of the best metroidvania style games that i played in this generation, because it makes you feel every bit of exploration worth it. There are some issues like “short campaign” and “non-attractive combat”, but with so many good aspects of the game, these issues can’t ruin your experience. You should try Journey to the Savage Planet, because it really worth your time. | Read review |
GamePitt | Rob Pitt | 8.8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a fun and rewarding exploration-based FPS with the option to play with a friend. It’s an adventure which you’ll be thinking about when you’re not playing it, wondering what lies ahead in the areas you can’t yet explore whilst imagining the kinds of creatures you’ll find living there. The colourful and whimsical nature of the game will leave a smile on your face, whether you’re kicking around creatures smaller than you or simply burying the remains of your previous attempt at life, it’s just so much fun! You’ll come for the colourful adventure and you’ll stay for the addictive and charming gameplay. | Read review |

Gamers Heroes | Blaine Smith | 5.5 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Ultimately, Journey to the Savage Planet is a little less savage and a little more tame. What it does, it does quite well; it’s just a shame it doesn’t do very much. A decent title for those that get excited at the thought of exploration, but an otherwise unremarkable experience. | Read review |
Gamersky | 金闪闪老里 | 7.8 / 10 | 02-13-2019 | Journey to the Savage Planet doesn’t as savage or wild as I thought, actually the style is a little bit weird and funny. Of course, it’s not perfect but at the end of the day, I enjoy spending time on the Planet especially with my friends. | Read review |

GamingTrend | T.K. Hale | 85 / 100 | 02-03-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is an amazing experience of alien planetary exploration where the developer’s imaginations were allowed to paint a canvas of fun, art style, and humor that never felt forced or over the top. Once you temper expectations and remind yourself that this is a game about exploration and not an alien shoot em’ up or a fully packed RPG, you begin to realize how special this game is. The game offers 2-player co-op online which many titles like this wouldn’t even think twice about. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Mick Fraser | 8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a smaller, happier version of what No Man’s Sky should have been at launch. Filled with things to find, trials to survive and, most importantly, genuine personality. | Read review |
GotGame | Cole Nixon | 8.5 / 10 | 02-22-2020 | Journey To The Savage Planet may not be the most unique title, but it is a delightful space themed romp. As someone who isn’t the biggest fan of this genre of media, it serves as one of the better examples of its field. | Read review |

IGN Spain | Unknown | 7 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Typhoon Studios, formed by veterans of the Canadian industry, presents a great space exploration game for when we simply want to enjoy and let ourselves go, even if that means losing some depth and challenge. | Read review |

Jump Dash Roll | Ant Barlow | 6 / 10 | 02-18-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet weaves an intriguing interstellar narrative into a charming, albeit straightforward, first-person rogue-lite. At its best, Typhoon Studios’ game is a fun and quirky take on a pretty rote subject. Unfortunately, it struggles under the weight of poor controls, some awkward design choices and an unfortunate lack of polish. | Read review |
Just Push Start | Dominic Weakland | 3.4 / 5 stars | 01-27-2020 | Scoring games like this is extremely difficult. I had fun, I legitimately did, running around the planet, shooting enemies and being a jerk to pufferbirds. It’s just, had I stopped before collecting things I would’ve been at about five hours and even collecting things mostly added time due to issues solving puzzles. Once you start to see the mechanics, the adventure loses a lot of its charm and is just a weird world where you can shoot a complete enemies or jump to a hidden location/open a secret door. For some this is enough, but for most it’s likely an extremely difficult sell. | Read review |

MSPoweruser | Ash Worral | 7 / 10 | 01-31-2020 | Long story short, unlike my journey across the not-so savage planet: if you’re looking for fun with a hearty helping of a challenge, you’re in the right place. If you’re looking for a serious game with deep lore, you’re in the wrong place. Journey To The Savage Planet is a short but sweet and fun romp across a shallow pond, not to be taken too seriously but to be enjoyed without thinking too hard about it. I’d love to see a more in-depth sequel in the future but, for now, I’ll remain content with slapping rocks and loving my Pufferbirds. | Read review |
New Game Network | Drew Calise | 70 / 100 | 01-29-2020 | With its highs and lows, this light-hearted adventure remains generally pleasurable and highly relaxing. Although it turned out to be brief and very casual, I am hoping that there will be more content for Journey to the Savage Planet in the future. | Read review |
Nintendo Life | PJ O’Reilly | 8 / 10 | 05-25-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a wonderfully unique mixture of No Man’s Sky-style exploration and Metroidvania puzzling and platforming with a wonderfully dark sense of humour that arrives here on Switch in a slightly compromised but still eminently playable state. | Read review |
NintendoWorldReport | John Rairdin | 8 / 10 | 05-31-2020 | That being said, the rest of its excellent design blows right past that oversight. The Switch version in particular brings with it its own unique issues, but once again the design outshines these issues. While I can’t say the Switch is the ideal way to play this game, it is worth playing in whatever form you can. | Read review |
NoesPaisparaFrikis | Oscar Garcia Mompean | 8.3 / 10 | 02-11-2020 | Exploration, platforms, action and humor are the great virtues of one of the best games that this new 2020 has brought. | Read review |
Noisy Pixel | Tiago Rocha | 8.5 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet turned out to be the adventure that I was looking for. The game offers a nice balance of discovery and battles as you find yourself deeper into the strange environments. Sure, the animations and AI can be a bit wonky, but it doesn’t hinder the game’s sense of fun. | Read review |
NoobFeed | Adam Siddiqui | 80 / 100 | 01-27-2020 | You’re trapped on an alien world, your spaceship is broken, and the only way off this planet is to venture into the unknown and do your job. In any other game, this would be a bleak and dark adventure but not in Journey to the Savage Planet. Instead, despite being in a life and death situation the colorful world, toon-like lifeforms, and disturbingly cheerful AI create a lively atmosphere. Journey of the Savage Planet provides ample areas full of hidden secrets waiting to be unearthed but relies heavily on collecting items and hoarding resources. Despite the heavy collection focused gameplay the wit and charm of Journey of the Savage Planet provide a gleeful mask to cover the tedious collecting. | Read review |
OnlySP | Amy Campbell | 3 / 5 stars | 01-27-2020 | Despite some issues that create a disconnect between the lighthearted tone of the game and the intensity of the battles, Journey to the Savage Planet is exactly that: a journey across a planet that is just as silly as it is savage. | Read review |
Pardis Game | Abolfazl Molaei | 5 / 10 | 03-01-2020 | The exact moment I entered the game and saw the amazing graphics and possible ideas, I imagined that it would be an unique experience. PC Invasion | Jason Rodriguez | 7 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | With its surprisingly creative level design, architecture, and platforming mechanics, Journey to the Savage Planet will wow your eyes, while its quirky humor entertains you from time to time. Unfortunately, flaws such as uninspired combat, lack of enemy variety, and a fairly short campaign mar what could’ve been a truly unforgettable journey. | Read review |
Player2.net.au | Shaun Nicholls | Recommended | 01-31-2020 | Overall JTTSP was a fun game that had me eagerly taking control of my unnamed explorer to further plumb the secrets AR-Y 26, and spend time just wandering around killing various alien creatures. | Read review |
PlayStation LifeStyle | Annette Polis | 9 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | That said, Journey to the Savage Planet is such a ridiculously zany and wonderful game. No matter how many times I die, whether it be to a monster I just didn’t see or missing a grapple after grinding my way up the Spire, I look forward to returning to my corpse and giving it another go (and a proper burial). Whether you play the game solo or with an online coop partner, I hope you enjoy your time on AR-Y 26 as much as I have. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Joe Apsey | 8 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey To The Savage Planet is a fun, arcadey ride with its comedic characters, cartoony art style and unique blend of game genres. Secrets and secondary objectives galore, creative creature design, and a rewarding gameplay loop only add to that ride. Although the co-op disappoints, you shouldn’t overlook Typhoon Studios’ great first game. | Read review |
Polygon | Jeffrey Parkin | Recommended | 01-27-2020 | This is one of hundreds of games that ask us to kill and conquer, but never question our actions. The story tells us we’re here to have fun, and supposedly save the world. | Read review |
PowerUp! | Leo Stevenson | 9.1 / 10 | 01-28-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is the first good surprise for 2020 and it’s definitely a game for fans of adventure, exploration and, of course, Metroid Prime. | Read review |
Press Start | James Berich | 7.5 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a concise yet well focused adventure that channels the best bits of games like Metroid and Prey. Despite this, some unsatisfying combat and repetitive locales keep it from being the achievement that it could be. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Paulo Roberto Montanaro | 90 / 100 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a very pleasant and intriguing discovery experience, balanced and with a very particular mood. Visually captivating, the game knows how to dose moments of action with platforming, and its crafting system encourages exploration without forcing a tiring repetition and, added to all this, a light and very well told story. | Read review |
Push Square | Stephen Tailby | 6 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | It might lack some polish, but Journey to the Savage Planet is an enjoyable jaunt across a strange, open-ended landscape. This is a game you play in order to explore its intriguing environment and interact with the wildlife — combat is fairly dull, attempts at humour rarely land, and the story almost feels like an afterthought at times. If you’re looking for an easy-going sci-fi action game, this just about does enough to satisfy. | Read review |
Reloading BR | Felipe Mesquita | 7.75 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet is a good way to start 2020. A fun adventure that has found the right balance in the size of its map and exploration incentives. The main story beat is rather uninteresting, but the whole funny script they wrote around the beautiful world is a delight. The lackluster combat also hurts it a little, but exploring and experimenting with the game’s mechanics to solve puzzles and traverse the world was quite fun. | Read review |

Sirus Gaming | Erickson Melchor | 8 / 10 | 02-11-2020 | If you are looking for a good adventure game with some a bit of combat, this is a good find. It only takes a weekend to complete most of the quests. If you’ve got a couple of days, you might even find out what happens when you complete your mission before going back to Earth. For it’s witty writing alone, I highly recommend this game to players of all ages and skill levels. And do definitely stay for the exploration, it’s definitely worth it. | Read review |

USgamer | Hirun Cryer | 2.5 / 5 stars | 01-27-2020 | Journey to the Savage Planet puts you in a brilliantly colorful world, and tasks you with exploring to your heart’s content. The moment-to-moment exploration is enjoyable, but the act of combat offers very little in the way of a challenge. The score and insane FMV adverts give Journey to the Savage Planet a lot of personality, but the tiresome parody nature of the writing really lets it down. | Read review |

WayTooManyGames | Kyle Nicol | 7.5 / 10 | 06-01-2020 | The Switch port of Journey to the Savage Planet might have been a disappointing due to the severe amount of visual setbacks and a somewhat lackluster overall performance, but at the end of the day, it’s still a very playable and hilarious experience.
