Infernax is a medieval-style title that could remind us videogames like Zelda 2, Castlevania II or the more recent Shovel Knight. This time we will have to help a duke to rescue his beloved homeland from the invasion of hordes of demonic creatures, hooking us from the first minute with formulas and mechanics seen before that results into a fun game with a very affordable difficulty. A remarkable adventure and an almost mandatory acquisition that, without being extremely long, can take us about 8-10 hours to finish it. Its decision-making system will encourage us to replay it to see the different ways to unlock the different endings it has. |

Infernax keeps the things that worked from the nostalgic classics of yesteryear while changing what didn’t. I haven’t had this much fun with a game in a while. It’s just a perfect blend of difficulty and discovery from start to finish. It’s basic, sure, but sometimes shaving off the excess parts is how you polish something down to its core. |

Overall, Infernax is a title I didn’t know about a week ago and has quickly sucked me in and become one of my top titles to play for 2022. It is available starting February 14, 2022. I highly recommend this for anyone who is into retro-style RPGs and platformers. Have fun and enjoy it as much as I have. |

A gory affair, there’s a hell of a lot to like about Infernax. The tried-and-tested gameplay sits alongside purposefully dated but nonetheless charming visuals, but the freedom you have really sets this apart from other games in the genre. Will you save the world or be a blight on it? That’s up to you. And while you may always have good intentions, sometimes your decision can have unexpected results. In any case, you’ll have a lot of fun slaying monsters and developing Alcedor as you play. |

Without revolutionizing the metroidvania formula, Infernax manages to leave a very pleasant feeling. It does not invent anything, but the novelties it adds (decisions, NPCs with missions …) make it a small and pleasant surprise within the subgenre. And in addition, it does so by squandering sympathy and with great replayable value. |

Infernax is like an amazing cover of a favorite song. It perfectly encapsulates what a quintessential “’80s game” might feel like, complete with over-the-top carnage and a Game Genie reference that enhances your gameplay. If it’s your jam, you’ll want to play it over and over, just to see what’s behind all the locked doors and try to get all the endings. Even dying is fun because of all the different death animations. The marketing for this game singles out Zelda II and Castlevania II, but it’s got a ton of Metroid, Legacy of the Wizard, and more baked in. If you love the classics, or want a fantastic introduction to NES-style platformers, this is a game that deserves your attention. |

While some of the mid and late-game platforming challenges are pretty demanding, failing and having to make your way through familiar parts of the castles never takes too long. That said, I do wish the bosses put up a bit more of a fight; upgrading my stats and equipment at a regular clip allowed me to make short work of each one. As sure as the sun rises and sets (and wait until you see that in game), the Switch eShop will receive more and more titles hoping to cash in on NES-fueled nostalgia; don’t let that stop you from picking up the immensely satisfying throwback that is Infernax. Even though my mace and armor are dripping with demonic ichor, I’m still ready to charge back in. |

Even though it was initially difficult and with very basic combat, Infernax wooed me with its comical gore, beautiful music and simple art style. Infernax will not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you have a bit of time and want to play something a little different, I can recommend it. Just beware, you initially may need to navigate a bit of a skill wall of sorts to progress. |

Infernax brings an interesting system of choices in a retro game, giving a certain freedom to the player, something that was not so common in the 8-bit era. The gameplay is quite primitive and there hasn’t been too much effort to bring more modern elements to it. Thus, it is difficult to recommend Infernax to players who cannot tolerate the gameplay and aesthetics typical of the era it simulates. If that’s not your case, Infernax is worth checking out. It’s a nostalgic, fun game, with considerable content and with good surprises in store. |

Berzerk Studio has crafted something horrifically special with Infernax with it being one of the finest old-school action-adventure games I’ve played in some time. Every part of this game just screams quality from the art work, to the soundtrack, to the gameplay and how your choices affect the world you’re in. The game is unapologetic-ally gory and gruesome and that may not be for everyone but it was absolutely for me. Infernax may have been flying under the radar but you should absolutely add this one to your must-play list in 2022. |
