Hunt: Showdown is an incredibly tense survival horror multiplayer FPS. The stage is too small - the game lacks variety in both game modes and maps - but there are some great ideas here, and it comes highly recommended for junkies of hardcore, survival-based multiplayer in a horrific setting.

“In combining an open world monster-rush format with PUBG-esque PvP, Crytek has crafted a stealth survival game like few others.”

“Hunt: Showdown is a clever, hard-nosed FPS that doesn’t have enough substance to be truly essential yet.”
Jim Rossignol (VG247)
5/5 stars
“Perhaps the greatest achievement of Hunt is that it has taken the unknowable, unexpected possibility space of something like Day-Z, and boiled it down to something you can, and must, play in under an hour.”

33bits | Fernando Sánchez | 85 / 100 | 06-11-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is a cooperative and competitive multiplayer FPS that knows how to innovate by adding enough PVE elements to games and a double progress system, which allows the application of permanent death to our hunters, without losing the feeling of progress. All this wrapped in a high-level audiovisual section, especially the sound section, which directly affects the gameplay brilliantly. It is an exclusively multiplayer game and its future will depend on achieving a stable and healthy community, but we can see that the game has potential for it. | Read review |
Atomix | Rodolfo León | 78 / 100 | 02-29-2020 | HUNT: Showdown has the potential to be one of the very best FPS/horror games out there, but the initial content is not enough to keep the player engaged for long periods of time. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini | 8.5 / 10 | 09-01-2019 | Hunt: Showdown is a unique entry in online multiplayer from Crytek who brought tons innovations to the genre. Poor server quality aside, which can be easily fixed in the future, Hunt: Showdown is one of the most unique games in recent years. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Igone Martínez | Recommended | 02-20-2020 | If you are tired of multiplayer battle royale and are looking for something more similar to Monster Hunter where you form a team, but without worrying about the threat of other online players, Hunt: Showdown is an excellent candidate to get together with your friends and spend some terrifying and great times. | Read review |
COGconnected | Garrett Drake | 88 / 100 | 09-28-2019 | Aside from rare connection issues, Hunt: Showdown is unequivocally one of the best PvPvE experiences of this generation. It’s certainly not for everyone, but if you’re a junkie for hardcore, competitive, survival-based multiplayer in a horrific setting, I strongly recommend paying a visit to the bayou. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 7.5 / 10 | 10-02-2019 | Its world is magnificently detailed, the story is fascinating and while the bones may not have much meat on them for now, Hunt: Showdown is showing some promising signs of fattening up as it doubles down on adding to its creepy world. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Athanasios | 7 / 10 | 04-16-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is a great blend of battle royale and survival horror; one that is an enjoyable, but also unbelievably tense, and merciless gaming experience. Apart from being quite rough around the edges, its unrelenting nature (courtesy of its surprisingly cruel permadeath mechanic), and almost awful matchmaking logic, make this a game for only a few | Read review |
Cultured Vultures | Emil Gunnarsson | 8 / 10 | 08-29-2019 | Hunt: Showdown is an incredibly intense and sometimes nerve-racking game that will require a lot from you. In return, it delivers an experience and a world you will have a hard time finding anywhere else. | Read review |
Darkstation | Mark Steighner | 4 / 5 stars | 09-10-2019 | Hunt: Showdown doesn’t try to do a lot of things beyond its core mission, and the challenging gameplay and limited selection of maps — though they are expansive and interesting — might be a barrier to long-term enjoyment. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Matt Sainsbury | 3 / 5 stars | 02-21-2020 | Hunt could have been so much more. | Read review |
DualShockers | Jordan Boyd | 8.5 / 10 | 08-27-2019 | Hunt: Showdown's take on PvPvE is elevated by its masterful horror elements, great world design, and addicting gameplay loop. | Read review |

Everyeye.it | Carmine Capobianco | 8 / 10 | 09-03-2019 | Hunt is not entirely free from defects: there are only two maps and only two game modes are available, not to mention matchmaking and some weapon balancing problems. Nothing irredeemable, though | Read review |
FingerGuns | Greg Hicks | 8 / 10 | 03-08-2020 | It’s not something I would recommend to anyone just looking for a new shooter, nor would I try and pitch it to the masochistic Soulsborne crowd. It’s more of a middle ground game: it’s a new shooter with a very real challenge, also please buy it so I have someone else to play with. | Read review |
Gameblog | Camille Allard | 9 / 10 | 09-06-2019 | Hunt : Showdown is fantastic. The pleasure is immediate and very long-lasting as long as its difficulty does not upset you. It's a visceral and immersive experience that you should absolutely not miss if you are a fan of cooperative games. After 202 hours spent on it, starting from the first days of its Early Access, the situation is clear : Hunt: Showdown is an amazing FPS and it won't be forgotten. | Read review |
GamePro | Maximilian Franke | 85 / 100 | 10-07-2019 | Hunt: Showdown is an excellent multiplayer shooter on the Xbox One but the controller optimization leaves much to be desired. | Read review |
Gamerheadquarters | Jason Stettner | 8.2 / 10 | 02-25-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is a great competitive multiplayer experience featuring a rather ruthless and gritty world to face off in. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Will Borger | 7 / 10 | 09-13-2019 | It could use some more content and a little polish, but Hunt: Showdown is an intense and unique game with incredible sound design, a fantastic premise, and compelling gameplay. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Ron Burke | 70 / 100 | 09-22-2019 | I came away from Hunt: Showdown a little let down. The premise is good, the setting is something new, and many of the gameplay loop elements are unique. Better still, the combination of PvPvE sets the stage for something amazing, but that stage is just too damned small. With too deep a grind, and too few maps, Hunt: Showdown has just too little content (currently) to match its ambition. But hey...at least the hunting is cool! | Read review |
GBAtemp | Ben Sellwood | 9 / 10 | 02-18-2020 | I love what this game strives for, and I love how it plays out. Crytek excels in immersion and they have done an incredible job with Hunt: Showdown. Highly recommended if you have friends to partner up with, as server issues seem to plague it in its early days. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Lyle Carr | 9 / 10 | 02-18-2020 | An incredibly tense survival horror multiplayer FPS, where you are just as likely to die at the hands of a monster as you are another player. Listening out for enemy activity is crucial, and once you learn how all of its systems work Hunt: Showdown is a an extremely satisfying game. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | David Martinez | 78 / 100 | 02-19-2020 | Hunt Showdown is a tactical shooter like no other you´ve ever played before. It delivers a great balance between fights, horror elements, stealth... set in 19th century Louisina. On the downside there is no single player mode and we encountered some problems with matchmaking. | Read review |
IGN Italy | Alessandro Alosi | 8.1 / 10 | 09-03-2019 | Hunt Showdown is a good alternative for fans of competitive and hardcore online fps. It's engaging, intense and immersive to the point of nervous exhaustion. Its eccentric personality doesn't make it a game suitable for everyone, but for the same reason those who appreciate it will do it viscerally. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Unknown | 7.5 / 10 | 02-20-2020 | An almost perfect mix of survival horror and multiplayer that can be grat for fans of western and supernatural but that can bore to lovers of the most unbridled action. Hunt: Showdown has great ideas, but is lacking in game modes. | Read review |
INDIANTVCZ | Fabian Jaskulski | 8 / 10 | 04-20-2020 | Original multiplayer action that is focused on fighting against the environment rather than a duel between players. An audiovisual gem powered by the latest CryEngin, set in the era of cowboys, guns and bounty hunters. And all this dressed in a really horror coat. | Read review |
Jump Dash Roll | Harry Schofield | 6 / 10 | 03-03-2020 | While there are occasional highlights, Hunt: Showdown is an uneven online shooter which would have benefitted from improved technical performance and refinement of its moment-to-moment gameplay. | Read review |
LevelUp | Fernando Salinas | 7.7 / 10 | 03-02-2020 | Hunt: Showdown will keep you on the edge of your seat while you are taking down vile monsters and nasty players. Hunt is a well-themed competitive game that conveys various emotions while you play but offers little content. It is very likely that you will become addicted to bounty hunting, but it gets boring after a while. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | GameCentral | 8 / 10 | 02-20-2020 | An inspired mix of survival horror and battle royale that also manages to blend competitive and co-operative gameplay into a terrifyingly entertaining whole. | Read review |
New Game Network | Tim Reid | 72 / 100 | 09-08-2019 | Crytek have made something that feels truly distinct with Hunt: Showdown. The tense, high stakes PvP action blends well with southern swamp-horror PvE to create a fresh and compelling multiplayer experience, though the extreme lethality of the combat and a current lack of content might leave you hunting for a sale. | Read review |
Pardis Game | Mohammad Javad Majid Zadeh | 8.5 / 10 | 09-13-2019 | By a seemingly well-done combination of PvE and PvP elements, Crytek has done a great job in depicting the risky life of a bounty hunter, stuck in a post apocalypse in late 1890s. Realistic combat and the astonishing atmosphere of Hunt: Showdown provide a great opportunity for players who want to experience survival horror and battle royale together, like no other game. However, relatively clunky gunplay and somehow poor graphical optimization are two things that prevent this game from becoming a masterpiece | Read review |

PCGamesN | Benjamin Griffin | 6 / 10 | 02-18-2020 | An online horror shooter packing some suitably devilish details, but slow pacing and cruel penalties don't give you much reason to return.Benjamin Griffin | Read review |
Player2.net.au | Shaun Nicholls | Not Recommended | 03-02-2020 | “While Hunt: Showdown gives players a high calibre atmosphere to play in, the steep learning curve and difficulty for new players to survive encounters with veterans may give it problems in gathering a large player base.” | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | John-Paul Jones | 9.5 / 10 | 02-20-2020 | With its evocative setting and a delectable mix of PvE and PvP gameplay that provides a peerless theater for emergent player stories, Hunt: Showdown is an exceptionally clever and thoughtful shooter that elevates the genre as a whole. I can see Hunt Showdown being a fixture of my gaming diet for months, even years to come. | Read review |
Push Square | Lloyd Coombes | 8 / 10 | 02-24-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is a terrifying experience that is unlike anything else you'll find | Read review |
Saving Content | Scott Ellison II | 4 / 5 stars | 09-09-2019 | Hunt: Showdown is Crytek’s finest work to-date. The gameplay loop is equal parts exciting and dangerous, never feeling at ease in any given match. This is the best the CryEngine has ever looked. Hunt: Showdown is an evolved multiplayer shooter where the horror elements permeate throughout. Hunt: Showdown is an absolute gem for all the genres it plays a role in. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Ty Sheedlo | 3 / 5 stars | 08-30-2019 | Hunt: Showdown wants so desperately to be its own new thing that it didn't seem to consider that what it is... isn't particularly fun. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Ján Kordoš | 6 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | There are not very successfull monster hunters. Game looks promising, but there is ugly graphics and not enough content. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Pasquale Fusco | 8 / 10 | 03-03-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is un atypic competitive shooter. A different way to see the online FPS videogames, with great settings and PvP-PvE features. | Read review |
TechRaptor | Ron Welch | 7 / 10 | 09-02-2019 | Hunt: Showdown is a unique mix of battle royale and hardcore survival games. The learning curve is incredibly steep and permadeath is fairly punishing. However, the core gameplay has that spark of horror tension and the art design excels in every aspect. | Read review |
The Digital Fix | Andrew Shaw | 7 / 10 | 02-20-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is a solid game, with genuine thought put into making it play in a distinct way, but it feels too anonymous in every other key area to be essential within the genre. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Gian Filippo Saba | 8.2 / 10 | 09-01-2019 | With its horror setting, slow-paced gameplay and unforgiving permadeath Hunt: Showdown is one of the most interesting FPS of this generation. An easy game to recommend if you like the idea of hunting big bad monsters and don't mind the random server problems. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Jim Hargreaves | 8 / 10 | 03-11-2020 | I'll admit I wasn't keen on Hunt: Showdown to start with, but after the first few matches I realised there's something special here. This is an unusual entry in a genre ruled by far snappier shooters, and it takes time to get your head around Crytek's clever twist on the formula. Stick with it and you'll be rewarded with a uniquely engrossing multiplayer experience. | Read review |
VG247 | Jim Rossignol | Recommended | 02-17-2020 | Perhaps the greatest achievement of Hunt is that it has taken the unknowable, unexpected possibility space of something like Day-Z, and boiled it down to something you can, and must, play in under an hour. | Read review |
Wccftech | Dave Aubrey | 7.8 / 10 | 02-25-2020 | Hunt: Showdown is at first absolutely terrifying, but as you adjust it morphs into a smart, tense, and rewarding shooter that is best played with friends. It has slow moments and losing your hunter and progress can be incredibly frustrating, but those moments are all forgiven when you take down an enemy team with your sniper rifle. A fascinating shooter which isn't for everyone, but might be for you. | Read review |
