Thrilling, high-powered combat is let down by a lack of depth, disappointing narrative structure, and overly repetitive gameplay.

“An enjoyable hack and slash looter that plays well despite a sparse, repeating structure.”
Adam Cook (God is a Geek)

“Godfall is a massive surprise. It borrows combat from God of War and has enough loot to make Diablo blush. It may look garish but it’s well designed and has that “one more go” factor.”
Josh Hawkins (Shacknews)
7/10
“If you want a fairly mindless RPG experience that offers some different weapons and gear to mess around with, then Godfall will give you at least a few hours of fun. Just don’t expect a fantasy story worthy of its inspirations, or a world that fully explores its potential and you’ll be fine.”

33bits | Euyen Esquefa Pons | 65 / 100 | 12-24-2020 | Godfall is not a bad game. If it were the basis for a game-service that was gradually expanding, it could probably be said that it is a remarkable basis. But it is a complete game, the expansions of which will be paid, and as a complete game, it lacks content in abundance, artificially increasing the hours through an absurd search for lootables for repetitive and generic scenarios. The combat, yes, although it has flaws, it is fun, and if we like the proposal, we can enjoy it. | Read review |
AusGamers | Steve Farrelly | 6 / 10 | 11-17-2020 | Despite that less than acceptable end game experience, I can still recognise the glimmer of potential in Godfall. For a first outing, Counterplay has achieved something that’s undeniably striking in the visuals department, though that’s marred by sameiness and the odd, isolated framerate hitch. We also have an addictive loot game and a surprisingly deep RPG upgrade system here, though it’s hamstrung by fisticuffs that don’t nail down those all important fundamentals. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Gabriel Bogdan | 6 / 10 | 12-10-2020 | Godfall is the most monotonous title we’ve played in the last years. The short playtime, the missing replayability and no real effort to make the player care for the story and world are making Godfall the worst PS5 Launch Game. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Luke Mitchell | 5 / 10 | 11-16-2020 | It might at least be a fun one to pick up on sale in a few months when the launch hype has died down – by then, they’ll have hopefully mixed in some more variety to make it worthwhile. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Raúl Pinto | Not Recommended | 12-20-2020 | Godfall is an A-RPG looter-slasher which transports us to a dystopian epic fantasy universe. Within it, a betrayal has taken place and it is our duty to take revenge. It is a game that presents us with an interesting plot, but with a better execution. On a visual level it is really beautiful and the soundtrack shows all the talent of its composer, but because of fualt several defects in the gameplay, the entire title does not arrive as far as it should, leaving half without standing out in any combat aspect. | Read review |
COGconnected | Michael Chow | 68 / 100 | 11-21-2020 | While Godfall’s technical components of gameplay and graphics were solid, the game overall is just fine. As mentioned, the narrative as told throughout is relatively shallow, and despite a fun combat system, it does get repetitive. Finally, the recurrence of a number of bugs hampered my personal experience, and these do not appear to be an isolated case. While I quite enjoyed Godfall at the outset, it began to wane on me over time, and what might have been a decent launch title may not seem like it years from now. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 6 / 10 | 11-16-2020 | Godfall hits the nail on the next-gen launch game head: All style, very little substance. Granted there’s some fun to be had but once the next-generation glitz wears off what’s left is a repetitive slog through levels that quickly get old. | Read review |
Cultured Vultures | Brian Stasiukaitis | 5 / 10 | 12-03-2020 | Little more than a shiny exhibition of new-generation graphics, Godfall only succeeds in creating interesting combat systems without giving any thought to the world and story around it. | Read review |
Daily Mirror | JC Suttun | 3 / 5 stars | 11-18-2020 | If you can reduce the narrative to background noise and brute force your way through some of the shortcomings, there are worse ways to spend your time than with this middling adventure, although given the PS5 version’s whopping £70 price point (just for the standard edition), you may want to wait for a sale. | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 7 / 10 | 12-15-2020 | While many will remember the title for being an astute testimony for next gen hardware, it will be long forgotten for its poorly penned campaign, lack of creativity, aesthetic akin to a grounded Destiny, and desolate environment that protects, or shields the player from difficulty. If borrowing key elements from a Souls title is anything to go by, than Godfall would have an exponential improvement in its overall challenge. | Read review |
Destructoid | Chris Carter | 7 / 10 | 11-13-2020 | It’s a shame this had to be $70 out of the gate on PS5 (it’s $59.99 on PC) and that it has to be tethered to an always-online system. Whoever made that decision doomed this project’s reputation, at least in the short term. Godfall is going to go down as one of the most divisive games of this generation’s launch: a relic to some, a wild whispered-about gem to others. Make sure that before you get it, all of your action-junkie boxes are checked. | Read review |
Digital Trends | Giovanni Colantonio | 2.5 / 5 stars | 11-11-2020 | Godfall’s dazzling visuals and promising combat are held back by repetitive dungeon crawling. | Read review |
DualShockers | Scott White | 5.5 / 10 | 12-16-2020 | The numerous pitfalls and issues in Godfall prevent the better aspects from shining through, leaving only a dull mess that isn’t worth the hefty price tag. | Read review |
EGM | Josh Harmon | 4 / 10 | 11-11-2020 | Godfall’s sluggish, overly complicated combat, hilariously paper-thin story, and numerous technical issues make it a lowlight of the PlayStation 5’s launch lineup. | Read review |
Eurogamer | Vikki Blake | Not Recommended | 11-20-2020 | Godfall offers obnoxiously stylish next-gen spectacle, but its appeal only runs skin deep. | Read review |
Expansive | Brad Baker | Not Recommended | 12-07-2020 | The launch of Godfall is a little bit of a misstep, especially considering the competition it had to go up against and the price it was retailing for, but there are some really clever, interesting mechanics in play here that are keeping me glued to my DualSense, along with a lot of promise for the future. Hopefully, the team persevere and get the chance to explore it. | Read review |
Fextralife | Yuria | 7.5 / 10 | 11-11-2020 | While primarily Godfall is a fun game, if you’re planning to play for solo content it may not be worth the full 60 USD at launch. Godfall mixes gameplay mechanics from a few popular titles, but doesn’t do anything ground breaking. The game is great to play in co-op and will be best suited for those looking forward to multiplayer content. | Read review |
Forbes | Paul Tassi | 5 / 10 | 11-18-2020 | I cannot recommend this game at full price. Again, as part of a free subscription it might be worth checking out and getting a few hours of slashy combat in. But I wouldn’t touch it unless the $70 asking price comes down by at least half, and even then, there are a half dozen other better games out this fall alone. I wanted to like Godfall. I never want to see games in this genre fail. But fail it does, and in a worse way than anything I have seen in a long while. | Read review |
Game Informer | Andrew Reiner | 7 / 10 | 11-13-2020 | Fun to play solo or with friends, but both avenues are filled with monotonous level design | Read review |
Game Rant | Dalton Cooper | 2.5 / 5 stars | 11-24-2020 | Godfall’s hack-and-slash combat is fun enough, but the dull story and pointless loot keep it from reaching its full potential. | Read review |
Game Revolution | Jason Faulkner | 3.5 / 5 stars | 11-25-2020 | hope that Godfall gets some content updates, as it feels like Counterplay Games might have rushed development to meet the PS5 release date. The core combat system is satisfying and would shine if the game had more unique content to push the player forward. As it is, there’s very little hook and most players will likely find themselves getting bored around the halfway mark. | Read review |
Gameblog | Jonathan Bushle | 6 / 10 | 11-30-2020 | Godfall is a very good-looking game for your brand new PS5, very shiny, but the battle system and gameplay as a whole becomes very boring pretty quickly, as it has many many issues too. | Read review |
GameCrate | Giancarlo Valdes | 6.8 / 10 | 12-23-2020 | Godfall could scratch that action game itch if you don’t mind how lackluster it is in other areas. A paid expansion is coming out in 2021, so I’m curious to see if that’ll address any of my concerns about the campaign. | Read review |
Gamefa | Amirmehdi Namjoo | 7.2 / 10 | 11-24-2020 | Godfall is a looter slasher game that successfully delivers a robust combat system alongside gorgeous next-gen graphics. Unfortunately, it fails in utilizing all the potential of story settings. It also gets boring and repetitive near the end. It doesn’t add anything special to the action genre. It is not a bad game; neither is it a great game. Godfall is just an OK game with really astonishingly good graphics. | Read review |
GameHaunt | Mark Louis Salazar | 3.5 / 5 stars | 11-26-2020 | Godfall is undoubtedly a visually appealing game. The combat mechanics and gameplay is also a solid plus. | Read review |
GameMAG | Unknown | 5 / 10 | 11-25-2020 | In the end Godfall feels like a tech demo with questionable battle system, mandatory grind, boring locations and uninspiring plot. And as a cherry on top you can expect plenty of bugs and glitches. You can try this game, sure, but only if you don’t have anything better to play, and only after some much needed updates and bugfixes. | Read review |
GamePitt | Rob Pitt | 8 / 10 | 01-18-2021 | Godfall quickly became an obsession for me, the gameplay is super addictive and the combat is brilliant. If you’re into loot-based games such as Diablo III, or you like games with heavy combat such as the Souls games, you’ll enjoy this game – as long as you don’t mind a bit of grinding if playing solo. If you’re looking for a deep story with lots of lore and background, this may not be for you (although there are hidden lore files to find), this will appeal more to those who like to jump in occasionally in order to gain better gear and experience. It won’t be for everyone but I couldn’t stop playing it once I started, THIS is a next-gen game – from it’s visuals to the use of the intuitive controller. | Read review |
Gamersky | 金闪闪老里 | 6.5 / 10 | 11-18-2020 | Godfall is a typical game that make you scream when you watching its trailers, but make you sleepy when you actually playing. Its gorgeous art design and outstanding graphics are indeed commendable. But in other parts, it’s very boring. | Read review |
GameSkinny | David Jagneaux | 6 / 10 | 11-18-2020 | Godfall’s incredible visuals and stylish combat lift up an otherwise repetitive and bland hack n’ slash adventure that lacks depth. | Read review |
GameSpot | Richard Wakeling | 5 / 10 | 11-16-2020 | Even if you can play with others, Godfall’s meaty combat eventually begins to wear thin after the umpteenth version of the same fight. This is a shallow game bolstered by decent combat that struggles to bear the weight of an entire game. Uninteresting loot mixed with a monotonous and grindy structure is not a good combination, and for as satisfying and fun as it can often be to hack your way through one battle after another, there’s not enough here to sustain that enjoyment for more than a few hours. | Read review |
GamesRadar+ | Leon Hurley | 3.5 / 5 stars | 11-11-2020 | An enjoyable hack and slash looter that plays well despite a sparse, repeating structure | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Sean Cahill | 5.5 / 10 | 12-14-2020 | A visually stunning game, Godfall suffers from repetitive combat and a lackluster story that is forgettable after the first hour. In an industry with so many Dark Souls-style games, this is not one to spend time on. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Will Borger | 6 / 10 | 11-14-2020 | The combat feels good, but that doesn’t stop it from being an aggressively mediocre game that lifted most of its gameplay ideas from better titles. Play those instead. | Read review |
GBAtemp | Ben Sellwood | 6 / 10 | 11-23-2020 | Godfall is all style and no substance. The next-gen lick of paint certainly makes it an exquisite looking stunner, however, at its core is some lacklustre gameplay and some genuinely lethargic missions. The boss battles are exciting and momentarily engaging, and the art style incredible, but I’m left feeling more than a little underwhelmed and unfulfilled. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Adam Cook | 8.5 / 10 | 11-11-2020 | Godfall is a massive surprise. It borrows combat from God of War and has enough loot to make Diablo blush. It may look garish but it’s well designed and has that “one more go” factor. | Read review |
GotGame | Kieran Toovey | 6 / 10 | 12-15-2020 | The reality is that Godfall looks and plays like a next generation game, but it’s such a hollow experience. Honestly, it’s surprising how overwhelmingly average the game is, given that there are several positive aspects to it. Even for diehards of the looter genre, this is a tough one to recommend. | Read review |
Hardcore Gamer | Kevin Dunsmore | 3 / 5 stars | 11-15-2020 | Console launches are notoriously difficult for developers as they work to get a grasp on new technology. | Read review |
Heavy | Elton Jones | 5.75 / 10 | 11-19-2020 | Godfall had a lot going for it. It was unveiled as the very first PS5 release, adopted the moniker of a looter slasher, and looked to be the equivalent of Warframe when it first launched on PS4. Unfortunately, it fails to stand out as a must-play killer app for the newly released PS5. Boredom quickly sets in as you run around gorgeous yet incredibly lifeless locales, embark on tiresome quests, and get treated to a storyline that’s entirely forgettable. Godfall’s quality combat mechanics, healthy offering of cool looking loot, and slick looking Valorplate armors are sadly stuck within a lackluster shell of a game. | Read review |
Hobby Consolas | Álvaro Alonso | 60 / 100 | 12-22-2020 | A game that is simply correct on all fronts, entertaining and visually striking, but with abundant playable stumbles, glitches and an alarming paucity of content. | Read review |
IGN | Tom Marks | 6 / 10 | 11-11-2020 | Godfall can be an enjoyable and lovely gear-based action game while it lasts, but the repetition of its missions wears thin before the end of its campaign, and even thinner in the endgame afterward. Its combat is packed full of decisions to make and a healthy mix of familiar and genuinely novel mechanics, but its Valorplate suits aren’t as mechanically diverse as they initially seem on their gorgeous exteriors. With neither an interesting story nor a deep pool of varied content, all the choice Godfall offers doesn’t amount to much more than a bit of brief and shallow fun. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Álex Pareja | 7 / 10 | 11-20-2020 | Godfall is a fun video game that relies on a very rich universe with an interesting lore. However is inferior to other similar proposals that now offer something similar in free to play format. | Read review |
INDIANTVCZ | Jakub Kadlus | 4 / 10 | 11-28-2020 | Godfall had potential, but unfortunately the developers chose to ignore it completely and instead there is a highly repetitive experience with a mindless story and a bunch of mistakes. Even the well-made combat or beautiful graphics of the environment cannot save a title where nothing simply matters. | Read review |
Just Push Start | Mark Fajardo | 3.5 / 5 stars | 11-15-2020 | Truth be told, Godfall is a hard experience to review. You have a serviceable story, impressive graphics for a launch title, satisfying combat centered around an underwhelming loot system, RPG mechanics, and diversity. I will honestly say I did not get the experience I was expecting, something like Destiny centered around swords, but it was still good. There are certainly great things to be said about everything here, you should just go in expecting more of a hack and slash game than one centered around loot. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | GameCentral | 5 / 10 | 11-13-2020 | Although it seems to have all the necessary components to become a compelling looter-slasher Godfall’s fussy mechanics and repetitive design will quickly sap your interest. | Read review |
New Game Network | Josh Hinke | 40 / 100 | 11-25-2020 | Godfall is such an unpleasant experience it’s difficult for me to find anything to like. Occasionally, it flirts with just being a mediocre snooze, but then you hit an aggravating boss fight that reminds you of how poorly it was designed. It would take an entire shift in tone and genre to salvage anything offered. | Read review |
NoesPaisparaFrikis | Impozible Julin | 8 / 10 | 12-24-2020 | The balance in its combat systems is undoubtedly the greatest and best success of this Godfall, which also covers its solid systems with a very colorful artistic section that moves smooth as silk, with a multitude of details, reflections, brightness, flashes, and particles flooding the screen. And it controls itself wonderfully. They just lacked that little bit of ambition to take the game a little further in terms of scenario design, and try to alleviate a little the repetitiveness of a title that, on the other hand, is the first game of the studio and a new IP . It is something that makes us expect more and better things from Counterplay Games for the future. And also something that they should and I hope they are proud of. | Read review |
PC Gamer | Dave Meikleham | 65 / 100 | 11-18-2020 | A pleasant, samey slasher that may bore your digits while making your GPU sweat. | Read review |
PC Invasion | Andrew Farrell | 7.5 / 10 | 11-12-2020 | It’s derivative, only has three zones, and doesn’t have much to offer besides its combat, but Godfall will be enjoyable to anyone who just wants a well-tuned, good-looking action RPG to slash their way through. | Read review |
PCGamesN | Iain Harris | 5 / 10 | 11-13-2020 | Godfall’s tried and trusted combat feels pleasant from moment-to-moment, but doesn’t do enough to distract from an otherwise hollow experience. | Read review |
PlayStation LifeStyle | Louis Edwards | 6 / 10 | 11-17-2020 | Godfall is a beautiful game with a shallow story, but could have been so much more had someone taken the time to really hash it out and tie each Valorplate into a different character and expand on the realms. Instead we are given a confusing story that doesn’t fit the equipment and realms that really don’t care which suit you are wearing. While the weapons and armor gave the game a serious chance at success, I’m afraid the storyline and repetitive gameplay will doom this game to the bargain bin. It is beautiful, though, and that is its greatest achievement as a launch day PS5 title. | Read review |
PlayStation Universe | Eric Hauter | 6 / 10 | 11-16-2020 | Godfall has all the ingredients for an enjoyable epic game, but somehow these ingredients are assembled into a soulless Franken-game that feels empty and soulless. While the combat is solid, and some of the boss fights are clever, players will still be left wondering why they should continue playing. Gorgeous to look at, but ultimately numbing to play. | Read review |
Polygon | Suriel Vazquez | Not Recommended | 11-17-2020 | Then, about three-fourths into my playthrough, I found a legendary warhammer with an unbelievably powerful perk. Whenever I used a Weapon Technique, it created an enormous bubble that slowed any enemy within it to a crawl. It didn’t rely on a trigger, ailment, debuff, a percentage, or anything. When it dropped, I read the description in bewilderment. Was this thing for real? It was so out of line with anything else the rest of the game had given me that I doubted it’d be useful. But it was. It made tough encounters a breeze. It destroyed bosses. The rest of the game went by in a flash. It was the most fun I’d had with Godfall, and I held on to that warhammer even after it was one of the weakest pieces of loot I had, just because of that one perk. I wish I’d found more items like it, because it was a welcome change of pace. | Read review |
Press Start | Toby Berger | 7 / 10 | 11-18-2020 | Godfall is often great in its moment to moment gameplay, though fails to ever make anything of its story. It’s a fun time, but never feels like it reaches its full potential. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Bruno Henrique Vinhadel | 50 / 100 | 12-10-2020 | Many promises so that in the end nothing good is found. Godfall is an unpleasant experience and far below any expectation for a launching game in a new console. It is not a must have on a PS5 and it is difficult to recommend the game in any situation. | Read review |
Push Square | Liam Croft | 5 / 10 | 11-23-2020 | If everything Godfall had to offer was as good as its satisfying combat system, we would be looking at a darn good PS5 launch game. However, in reality, that’s the only thing it has to boast about. An inconsequential loot system, recycled environments, and a frustrating mission structure thwart any sort of enjoyment the game might offer. It’s not god-awful, but Godfall is going to be very quickly forgotten about. | Read review |
Saudi Gamer | مشعل الصعب | 5 / 10 | 11-24-2020 | The game should’ve initially released as an early access game to be able to grow through the feedback of gamers who love this genre. However, the game was below expectations with minor fun elements but felt empty. As a new generation launch game we will hardly remember it in the future, unless it got the support it needs and tweaked to be a better game. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Maria Meluso | 3 / 5 stars | 11-12-2020 | Godfall is an ambitious action RPG with gorgeous graphics and great combat mechanics that jump off the screen. Unfortunately, its repetitive locations and missions, lack of strong narrative, and uncompelling characters may fail to impress players and those factors prevent Godfall from living up to its potential. | Read review |

SpazioGames | Unknown | 6.5 / 10 | 11-18-2020 | Godfall is a derivative action with a repetitive game structures and bad loot balancing. Despite the good graphics, there are few game elements that can be saved. | Read review |
TechRaptor | Austin Suther | 5 / 10 | 11-18-2020 | A disappointment in almost all areas besides combat and graphics, Godfall feels more like a next-generation showcase than anything else. A boatload of stats and unsubstantial loot are just some of Godfall’s major problems. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Gabriele Barducci | 7 / 10 | 11-25-2020 | Godfall is not a title without its charms. The combat system is solid and satisfying, and technically, the game is great proof of PlayStation 5’s potential. But cramming levels full of particles effects and shining lights does not necessarily make for good aesthetic design, and Godfall also suffers from a weak story and repetitive endgame. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Jim Hargreaves | 5 / 10 | 11-17-2020 | It takes a while for Godfall’s combat to truly open up and when it does, you’ll revel in its beefy ballet of well-timed blows and counters. That said, it’s hard to ignore the flimsy scaffolding that keeps this PS5 launch title standing, the lack of matchmaking, and a loot system you’ll quickly lose interest in. Although still great fun in short bursts, this isn’t the rousing next-gen RPG experience you’ve been searching for. | Read review |
TrustedReviews | Alastair Stevenson | 3.5 / 5 stars | 11-11-2020 | Godfall currently feels very familiar: it unashamedly borrows the loot system that made Destiny and Borderlands great, attempting to mix it with hardcore Souls-like melee combat. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Zhiqing Wan | 2.5 / 5 stars | 11-30-2020 | After slogging through the rest of Godfall’s campaign, you’ll reach the end-game content, consisting mostly of Dreamstone missions, which do continue the story a little bit. Past that, you’ll be grinding through the game’s toughest missions repeatedly in search of greater loot. | Read review |
Use a Potion | Unknown | 8 / 10 | 11-27-2020 | Godfall is guilty of being a little repetitive in design, but the fantastic combat mechanics and satisfying loot system more than make up for it. I had a whole lot of fun slicing away at enemies, whilst seeing my gear and skills constantly improve brought with it a rewarding sense of progress – especially when comparing my loadout with friends when playing through the campaign in online co-op. | Read review |
USgamer | Julie Muncy | 2.5 / 5 stars | 12-09-2020 | While a bit muddled in combat design and pretty dull in world design, Godfall is a passable 3D action game. Under normal circumstances, you’d be safe to skip it, but if you need something to play on that shiny new PlayStation 5, it’s not the worst option. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Kyle Nicol | 5.5 / 10 | 12-08-2020 | Godfall is this generation’s very own Ryse: Son of Rome. Beyond the beautiful graphics is a game that has no depth whatsover. | Read review |
Wccftech | Kai Powell | 7 / 10 | 11-11-2020 | While not our final score for Godfall, we’re reserving the opportunity to adjust the tally for Godfall based on the endgame content. If it somehow redeems the lackluster loot that players will carve through during the campaign, that number might change. Otherwise, go into this one looking for some quality swordplay and subpar swords. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Jon Hueber | 3.5 / 5 stars | 12-02-2020 | Godfall is one of the very few new IPs available for next-gen consoles at launch, and while it’s fun to play and gorgeous to look at, it doesn’t have much else going for it. | Read review |
Worth Playing | Chris “Atom” DeAngelus | 7 / 10 | 11-26-2020 | At the end of the day, Godfall is a game with a dull story, boring world, uninteresting loot, and simplistic combat, but it looks pretty and feels nice to play. It’s not a bad game for a quick playthrough, but it’s not something that is going to keep your attention for very long, despite theoretically being designed for loot-grinding fun. Considering the new game price of $70, it’s difficult to recommend Godfall, even if you’re very hungry for a new game for your PS5. Once it comes down in price, it’ll be easier to justify picking it up for a mindless hack-and-slash weekend, but at the moment, it doesn’t do enough to really be worthwhile. | Read review |
ZTGD | Ryan | 6.5 / 10 | 12-29-2020 | If you love melee combat looters and prioritize minute to minute action over any degree of lasting depth or narrative impact, you may find some enjoyment here. For most of us though it seems Godfall’s ultimate destiny is to be placed on the “Oh yeah, THAT game” shelf with the rest of it’s fellow LALG’s. | Read review |
