Limited by a rote and rigid world, Sucker Punch’s samurai homage pairs okay action with enjoyably committed, if awkwardly fawning melodrama.
Ghost of Tsushima offers a lovely world to explore, and there’s value in that, but it should have been so much more than a checklist of activities to accomplish.
Ghost of Tsushima has some dull edges, but strikes a lot of highs with its cinematic stylings.

33bits | Fernando Sánchez | 90 / 100 | 08-05-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is the latest Sucker Punch play. An outstanding game that presents us with the most trustworthy and beautiful feudal Japan that we can remember. A game made with respect and affection, that although it is not as revolutionary as it appears, if it meets the most important premise, fun. | Read review |
3DNews | Алексей Лихачев | 7.5 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | A decent open-world game with gorgeous art direction and some unfortunate missteps which become more and more apparent the more you play. Whatever you are doing here, almost every mission ends up with two or even three fights with mongolian soldiers. And even engaging stories during these quests can’t fix the repetitiveness. | Read review |

Ars Technica | Sam Machkovech | Recommended | 07-14-2020 | If you need to get lost in over 30 hours of heroic gameplay right now, in a single-player adventure with no online connectivity gimmicks or content locked away as DLC, Sucker Punch has you covered with an instant contender for 2020’s game of the year. | Read review |
Atomix | Alberto Desfassiaux | 91 / 100 | 07-14-2020 | Yes, we have the presence of some clutches and design flaws very typical of the subgenre to which this title belongs, but nothing that overshadows the experience that this closure represents to the great exclusives of the PlayStation 4. | Read review |

AusGamers | Kosta Andreadis | 8.1 / 10 | 07-15-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima isn’t perfect, not even close. But neither is Jin Sakai, and his journey from Samurai to Ghost is one worth savouring, and a Legendary Tale all its own. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Kasra Karimi Tar | 9 / 10 | 07-18-2020 | Whether you are a fan of action adventure games, RPGs, or deep open world games, you’ll probably enjoy Ghost of Tsushima, and if it weren’t for some AI issues and repetitive side mission, it would have even reached higher. Nevertheless, GoT is a poetic and cinematic experience that will suck you into its each and every moment. | Read review |

Digital Chumps | Nathaniel Stevens | 9 / 10 | 07-24-2018 | Ghost of Tsushima is a narrative-driven game that has unique combat, a plethora of exploration, and enough heart to keep gamers coming back for more even after the game is beaten. Hobby Consolas | David Martinez | 91 / 100 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushime is a beautiful game. This samurai open world has a great combat system and it is technically flawless, but its gameplay is too conservative and it often feels too generic. | Read review |
Hynerd.it | Angela Pignatiello | 8.8 / 10 | 07-25-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is the perfect closure to the PlayStation 4 life cycle. The Sucker Punch development team has given its best in recreating feudal Japan, albeit not historically accurate. But the important thing for the title is not to immerse the player in that historical period, but more to recreate the mood in which the samurai lived at the time. And this was done excellently, even if the combat system has a big problem with the camera. This and the repetition in the long run are the only two flaws of this title which is visually a feast for the eyes. So, in conclusion, Ghost of Tsushima is a stylish “end” to the PlayStation 4 generation, waiting for the next console. | Read review |

LevelUp | Luis Sánchez | 8 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is a slight surprise. It is an all-around experience which delivers the fantasy of being a mythical samurai warrior. However, not everything shines, especially with the stealth systems, that do not square up, mechanically nor thematically. As the old saying goes, a samurai cannot obey 2 masters, because he dishonors himself. PlayStation LifeStyle | Paulmichael Contreras | 9 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima ends the current generation of consoles on a high note. A fantastically gorgeous world sets the stage for high-stakes close quarters combat, with multiple enthralling stories told over many chapters that keep the player moving across the island. Core combat is rewarding, and while enemy AI is disappointing outside of combat, all other aspects of Ghost of Tsushima have been lovingly crafted, and will be thoroughly enjoyed by players of all types. Polygon | Carolyn Petit | Not Recommended | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima offers a lovely world to explore, and there’s value in that, but it should have been so much more than a checklist of activities to accomplish. | Read review |
Post Arcade (National Post) | Chad Sapieha | 8.5 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is indisputably indebted to Assassin’s Creed (and, to a lesser degree, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption games), but it does just enough to establish a personality of its own. And it’s fun. | Read review |
PowerUp! | Adam Mathew | 8 / 10 | 07-15-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima isn’t perfect but, like a summoned objective on your touchpad, it’s a breath of fresh air that’ll send a warm chill down the spine of any Samurai aficionado. | Read review |
Press Start | Kieron Verbrugge | 8.5 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima might be built from the same stuff as its AAA, open world contemporaries, but that doesn’t stop it from being one of the best open world experiences of the generation. | Read review |
PSX Brasil | Bruno Henrique Vinhadel | 94 / 100 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima can be considered one of the best open world games of this generation, mainly for its sublime ambience and fantastic art direction. The journey of Jin Sakai and the universe created is very interesting, specially for what can happen beyond that. A fun gameplay, rich world, captivating characters and more, make the latest Playstation 4 exclusive a more than worthy closure for the generation. | Read review |
Push Square | Robert Ramsey | 9 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is a joy to play and a joy to behold. Sucker Punch has crafted one of the most memorable open world games of this generation, buoyed by an immensely satisfying combat system and an engaging, dramatic story. | Read review |
Rectify Gaming | Dave Rodriguez | 9.5 / 10 | 08-02-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima treats the era with respect. The solemn approach to an open world is Sucker Punch’s best game yet. | Read review |
Rice Digital | Trent Cannon | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-30-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima may or may not be the game of the year for a lot of people. Between the stunning visuals, solid story and characters, and one of the best uses of the open world framework I’ve seen, it is a strong contender for me, even in a year that has included some fantastic releases. | Read review |
Rocket Chainsaw | Andrew Cathie | 4 / 5 stars | 07-26-2020 | Overall, Ghost of Tsushima is a gorgeous and highly engaging narrative adventure, with some rote open world activities and small frustrations in combat. | Read review |
Saudi Gamer | عصام الشهوان | 9 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | The island of Tsushima is the star of the game, with its variety and beauty, and myriad of secrets and stories. Coupled with all the interlocking systems and varied options, though making the game somewhat bloated, makes this one of the most well rounded experiences I’ve experienced. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Christopher Teuton | 5 / 5 stars | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is the best Assassin’s Creed game there is, and likely the closest many users will ever get to experiencing what it’s like to be a samurai in 11th century Japan. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Ondrej Džurdženík | 8.5 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima provides us with an awesome trip to feudal Japan that only lacks a bit of story depth. | Read review |
Shacknews | Blake Morse | 9 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Perhaps Ghost of Tsushima isn’t a perfect cherry blossom, but it is pretty damn close as far as I’m concerned. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | Erickson Melchor | 9 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is a worthy addition to the pantheon of games under the care of Sucker Punch Productions. This honestly feels like a true return to form from a studio that wavered ever so slightly at the beginning of this generation. Sucker Punch may have stumbled a little at the gates, but with a game like this, they finish strong at the twilight year of this console generation. A full understanding of the system’s strengths and a creative vision that would not compromise for anything, that’s what made the samurai epic, Ghost of Tsushima, possible. | Read review |

Slant Magazine | Justin Clark | 3.5 / 5 stars | 07-26-2020 | The game has the look of a thoughtful samurai epic, but the façade flakes under scrutiny. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Martin Kubeš | 90 / 100 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima was an excellent choice for the final AAA exclusive title for the PlayStation 4. You could hardly ask for a better ending to this console generation than this amazing adventure, offering dozens of hours of engaging gameplay and impressive moments. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Domenico Musicò | 8.2 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is probably the best game about Japan, but the story is too simple and the complex combat system can be tricked by evasive actions that transform it into an easy game. | Read review |
Stevivor | Steve Wright | 7 / 10 | 07-15-2020 | Like the initial entry in Assassin’s Creed, the franchise it unashamedly copies, Ghost of Tsushima is good but not great. | Read review |
Telegraph | Dan Silver | 3 / 5 stars | 07-14-2020 | Sucker Punch’s PS4 tribute to Akira Kurosawa is gorgeous to behold but its sparse open-world and bloated mechanics has it falling short | Read review |

The Digital Fix | Posted by Andrew Shaw | 10 / 10 | 07-22-2020 | The PlayStation 4 gets to bow out of this console generation in suitably epic fashion with this incredible title. Ghost of Tsushima sets a new standard in open-world action games with one of the best games of this generation or any other, for that matter. | Read review |
The Game Fanatics | Ethan Chen | 8.5 / 10 | 08-10-2020 | Overall, the story, world, and gameplay makes for a great open world experience that is held back by its inconsistent range of quality. The game is at its best in these cinematic and atmospheric moments, but is at its lowest when the game sometimes doesn’t have an answer to the player’s actions. It is hard to say that this game does anything wrong, but nothing much outside of the visuals and combat is truly great. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Danilo Dellafrana | 9.5 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is greater than the sum of its parts: it does not reinvent the wheel in any of its aspects, but offers an experience that will thoroughly entertain lovers of open world and oriental settings. | Read review |
The Outerhaven Productions | Conner B | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-23-2020 | Step into the beautifully realised island of Tsushima as you fight with every trick in the book to free your ancestral home from the Mongol hoard with blood, sweat and a lot of backstabbing. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Aran Suddi | 8 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is an artistic triumph, capturing a real cinematic feel through its visuals, immersive world and soundtrack. However, Jin is a serviceable main character and he and his journey to save Tsushima is often overshadowed by secondary characters and smaller, more personal stories found in the side quests. Throw in some formulaic missions and an awkward user interface, and Ghost of Tsushima is at times more style than substance. | Read review |
Too Much Gaming | Matthew Arcilla | 7 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | As an earnest, respectful tribute to jidaigeki dramas and the films of Akira Kurosawa, Ghost of Tsushima fares well enough. It creates a fictionalized account of the Mongol Invasion and weaves the tale into the most videogamey of videogame things – an open-world sandbox filled with straw-hat wearing ronin, mischievous foxes, hot springs, and meditative haiku. It’s easily the most ambitious output from Sucker Punch Productions to date. | Read review |
TrueGaming | محمد البسيمي | 8 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is an artistic experience packed with an engaging adventure that bring us many wonderful and thrilling storytelling moments. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Alex Gibson | 4.5 / 5 stars | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima features a level of charm that gives it a soul and personality lacking from so many AAA games lack these days. Even if it ultimately suffers from repetition by the game’s end, and despite a lack of variety in its quest, the magic of that initial exploration and the beauty of its world will stick with me for a very long time. | Read review |
Unboxholics | Σάκης Καρπάς | Recommended | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is not perfect, but it’s definitely a must for those who like 13th century Feudal Japan and the Samurai setting. | Read review |
USgamer | Mike Williams | 4 / 5 stars | 07-14-2020 | Sucker Punch’s first stab at a stealth action adventure hits the mark. The island of Tsushima is a beautiful backdrop for this tale of revenge and honor and the environmental art is a visual treat. Combat and stealth are largely solid, though there are issues with the camera and hitting the right targets. The biggest stumble comes with the Japanese vocal track, which isn’t synced correctly with the character’s lips, a shame for a game like this. Ghost of Tsushima isn’t the most innovative way to end a generation, but it is a fun one. | Read review |
VG247 | Kirk McKeand | Not Recommended | 07-14-2020 | Like the samurai, Ghost of Tsushima feels like a relic of a bygone era. | Read review |
VGChartz | Paul Broussard | 5 / 10 | 07-25-2020 | The attempt to tackle both stealth and combat creates a game that never really quite manages to fully get a grasp on either. | Read review |
Video Chums | A.J. Maciejewski | 9.6 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Undoubtedly, Ghost of Tsushima is the greatest game of the generation. With perfect storytelling, supremely satisfying combat, and an astounding world that’s packed with content and gorgeous sights, it raises the bar for open world games. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Joshua Wise | 8 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | The game may never have been as sweet as it was in the first of the three main areas, but, to its credit, that’s because I was swept along by the story. | Read review |
WayTooManyGames | Heidi Hawes | 10 / 10 | 08-07-2020 | Not only is it one one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played, but it’s probably the most immersive open world game I’ve ever experienced. This is a rare gem that is not only a piece of art, but also incredibly fun and satisfying to play. | Read review |
Wccftech | Alessio Palumbo | 9 / 10 | 07-14-2020 | Ghost of Tsushima is Sucker Punch’s best game yet and a great open world title capable of measuring to some of the biggest names in the genre. The excellent rendition of feudal Japan, along with its well-written characters and story, make Ghost of Tsushima stand out as the last must-have PlayStation 4 exclusive. | Read review |
