“This is a near miss, but as anyone who has ever played a turn-based game will tell you, a near miss can be all the enemy needs to take you out. This is an interesting, but hardly essential, addition to the Gears family.”
Dan Stapleton (IGN)
8/10
“Gears Tactics does an excellent job of grafting Gears’ signature look and feel onto XCOM’s turn-based battle format and looks great doing it.”
Mike Williams (USgamer)
4/5 stars
“Gears Tactics finds its niche by leaning further into the hyper-aggressive action and gore of the franchise. It throws tons of enemies at you, which forces you to move and keeps you on your toes, but can also become annoying and tedious in some missions. For a first-time outing though, Gears Tactics is a fantastic start.”

3DNews | Денис Щенников | 7.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is a successful experiment for both Gears franchise and Splash Damage. But there is much more potential than the game shows us. | Read review |
ACG | Jeremy Penter | Recommended | 04-27-2020 | With some inconsistencies, Gears doesn’t land perfectly but it does land on both feet. One firmly entrenched in excellent strategy, the other a perfect rendition of Gears but in a turn-based style | Read review |
Area Xbox | Sufli | 8.8 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | It is time for a new Gears. Not for a Gears that we are used to, but a Gears that changes to something else. Splash Damage and The Coalition are in charge of bringing us this title set 12 years before Gears Of War. Of course, it happens on our beloved Planet Sera; and yes, this planet is almost ours as Earth itself. | Read review |
Areajugones | David cruz | 9.2 / 10 | 05-27-2020 | The customization of our troops, the combats versus de final bosses and the aggressiveness of the enemies are the three elements that makes differences between Gears Tactics and other titles of the turn based strategy games, but don’t make a mistake; this is an spin-off but smells like Gears from start to the end. | Read review |
Atomix | Rodolfo León | 84 / 100 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics has great mechanics and overall is a fantastic strategy game, although some of its missions feel more like a chore. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Diego Perez | 4 / 5 stars | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics perfectly translates the aggressive, bloody action of the series to a turn-based format. | Read review |
AusGamers | Kosta Andreadis | 8.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | From the rushing melee-based Creepers to exploding Tickers to enemy snipers that can pin one of your squad members into place, there’s diversity in how each firefight plays out. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Mohamar Reza Rezvani | 8 / 10 | 05-16-2020 | Although Gears Tactics is heavily inspired by XCOM and its mechanisms, it’s still a great Tactical Turn Based Strategy that also remains loyal to the Gears of War universe. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Gabriel Bogdan | 7.8 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics successfully injects the brutal action of the Gears of War Series in a tactical environment with phenomenal boss fights and gory executions but runs itself in the ground with a repetitive mission structure and a lot of missing variety in many departments. Even newcomers of the Genre will soon have a desire for more. | Read review |
Checkpoint Gaming | Lise Leitner | 9 / 10 | 04-28-2020 | It’s clear that both Splash Damage and The Coalition have done their research; as a strategy title, Gears Tactics successfully captures the nuances of what makes a good strategy game work. Regardless of whether or not you’re a hardcore Gears of War fan, Gears Tactics offers a fresh take on the XCOM-like tactics formula that will be a joy to play for strategy fans. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Curro Medina | Recommended | 05-06-2020 | Gears Tactics could have been a major disappointment, something that any fan of the saga would want to forget, but far from all that, it is a more than remarkable game. Gears of War is natural in the turn-based strategy genre. A very enjoyable game for any fan of the saga. | Read review |
COGconnected | Paul Sullivan | 55 / 100 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics tries some new things, but ultimately results in a game that’s less tactics oriented than the name suggests. It’s a competent experience, but completely whiffs on character with a lackluster story and every tool is a hammer class design. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 9 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics isn’t just one of the biggest surprises of the year, it’s a vulgar display of power starring everyone’s favourite beefy boys in a bloody new direction that’ll test your trigger fingers with pure heavy mental action. | Read review |
cublikefoot | Chase Ferrin | 6 / 10 | 05-18-2020 | For being such a genre departure, its honestly surprising how well Gears Tactics plays. It not only fits perfectly into the series, but manages to do so with some excellent turn-based tactics gameplay and some great graphics and optimization to match. For the first half of the game, it’s easily some of the best I’ve seen from the genre. However, that’s just for the first half. By the time the latter half rolls around, you’ve already seen all the game has to offer. The mission variety drops off hard and the recruitment system just becomes a pain to deal with. | Read review |
Daily Star | Jonny Foster | 5 / 5 stars | 04-27-2020 | The Coalition has taken the Gears franchise in a brave new direction into XCOM’s genre and executed it to perfection | Read review |
DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 8 / 10 | 05-08-2020 | While re-establishing the brand into an entirely new gameplay loop will not only reaffirm Gears’ flexibility, but opens the door for its legacy to grow further. Gears Tactics is an industry changing realisation that marks an illustrious movement in gaming development. | Read review |
Destructoid | Brett Makedonski | 9 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | All my quibbles are on the periphery of Gears Tactics, though. The core — getting onto the battlefield and agonizing over every move — is excellent. There’s a smart experience here, one that feels both authentically Gears and tactics. That’s the best possible outcome. Gears Tactics is a great Gears game and a great tactics game. This 90% doesn’t miss. | Read review |
Digital Trends | Josh Brown | 4 / 5 stars | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics doesn’t have to rival the latest main-series game to get across the franchise’s grand ambitions of worldwide conflict. | Read review |
DualShockers | Ryan Meitzler | 8 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Effectively blending the Gears of War universe with strategy gameplay, Gears Tactics is a fast-paced experience that succeeds on both fronts. | Read review |
Echo Boomer | David Fialho | Recommended | 04-27-2020 | The revolutionary cover-based shooter gets adapted into a turn-based game, that still gets the fun, the action bits, the chaos and the adrenaline that defined the series. | Read review |
Eurogamer | Christopher Bratt | Recommended | 04-27-2020 | A competent tactical retooling of the Gears formula, even if the execution isn’t always spot-on. | Read review |
Expansive | Brad Baker | Recommended | 04-27-2020 | I really enjoyed Gears Tactics. Everything just comes together so well and without doubt, it’s one of the surprise packages of 2020. Cast it aside and discredit at your own risk Gears Tactics is a brilliant game that works as well as any other in the genre on almost every level. | Read review |
Game Debate | Chad Norton | 8 / 10 | 05-12-2020 | There’s a lot to love here about Gears Tactics, and it somehow manages to almost flawlessly blend the genre of one game with another one’s universe and characters with great execution. Yes, there are some issues, and they can be quite annoying, but in the end these won’t detract you from the sheer amount of enjoyment you will experience. It’s not perfect, but it’s damn good, surprisingly good. Now give me more, please. | Read review |

Gameblog | Camille Allard | 8 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is a nice surprise. If you like the XCOM genre, there’s a lot of fun waiting for you. It’s beautiful, epic and clever in its gameplay mechanics. And you dont need be familiar with the Gears saga to appreciate it. But if you are, it’s definitely a treat. | Read review |
GameGrin | Richard Shivdarsan | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2020 | Gears Tactics does a fantastic job at applying the X-COM formula to the Gears of War franchise despite it not changing much from the core gameplay. While the intrusiveness of side missions and some weak ability progression take away from the overall experience, Gears Tactics is a must-play for Gears fans and turned-based shooter fans alike. | Read review |
GameMAG | Unknown | 8 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is an exciting game with incredibly beautiful graphics, interesting missions and well-developed mechanics, which could have been better if the authors of the game paid more attention to the story. Anyway we have a great project for fans of the genre, regardless of their loyalty to the Gears of War franchise. | Read review |

Gamers Heroes | Blaine Smith | 8.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Everything about Gears Tactics screams quality, and it’s easily one of the best debut titles this genre has seen in years. It’s nearly time for X-COM to step aside – this genre just went up a Gear. | Read review |
Gamersky | Unknown | 8.4 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics delivers a very deep dimension of strategy while maintaining the wild style of the Gears series. It keeps me engaged for multiple hours. But at the end of the day, repetitive missions make me feel bored. | Read review |

GameWatcher | Jamie Davey | 7.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Staying true to the franchise, your Gears are brutal killing machines who live in a soap opera. We’ll add that it’s also rare to find a tactics game which makes you feel powerful but vulnerable at the same time, and that’s worth a lot. | Read review |
Gaming Nexus | Russell Archey | 9 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is definitely different than what Gears fans are accustomed to, being a tactical-style game, but I think it fits the genre pretty well. If you’ve ever wondered what Gears would be like outside of the main series, Gears Tactics shows that it does pretty well in a tactical-style. | Read review |
GamingBolt | Will Borger | 8 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics marries classic Gears of War elements with engaging tactical combat. It’s not as deep as X-Com, but this is a unique, enjoyable tactical game with a lot of depth that should entice fans of both Gears and X-Com. | Read review |
GamingTrend | Ron Burke | 95 / 100 | 05-13-2020 | At 192 pages, this hardcover book is filled from cover to cover with amazing concepts and final artwork that brings the story of Gears Tactics to life. It breathes even more life into characters that you’ll grow to love over the course of the game, providing a better understanding of friends and foes alike. While Gears isn’t known for its story depth, this book from Titan has something to say about that. | Read review |

Generación Xbox | Javier Bassols | 8.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is a round game that knows how to adapt the essence of the franchise to a new format. And it does so in a masterful way, adapting its unique characteristics and bringing new elements to the tactical genre. A good example is the final bosses and the way to face them, something unique and that brings a breath of fresh air into the game itself. | Read review |
God is a Geek | Mick Fraser | 10 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is big and brash at times, but it’s also deep, intelligent and balanced, with all the heart and passion we’ve come to expect from a Gears game. | Read review |
GotGame | Cole Nixon | 6.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Ultimately, Gears Tactics may be inviting to someone who wants a bridge between robust strategy and high octane excitement. However, veteran strategy game players may find this game a shallow ride. | Read review |
GRYOnline.pl | Krystian Smoszna | 8.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics requires a specific approach. Players looking for complex gameplay similar to the ancient UFO need to be warned – GT is even simpler than the newest XCOMs. It’s definitely not a game to cater to core veterans. However, this is the perfect introduction to tactical strategy for anyone who found the complexity intimidating! | Read review |
Guardian | Rick Lane | 4 / 5 stars | 04-30-2020 | It wouldn’t be Gears of War without gore, and combining strategy with viscera dispersal aplenty, this cerebral twist on an old favourite remains true to form | Read review |
GuiltyBit | Marcos Casal | 8.2 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics fully understands what a T-RPG is, however, it lacked a little more ambition to be able to rub shoulders with the greats of the genre. With a more varied mission design and better-managed depth of management, it would have shone the most. | Read review |

Hobby Consolas | Alejandro Alcolea Huertos | 82 / 100 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics reinvents the saga moving from shooter to tactical strategy. It keeps the essence of third-person shooter, it’s fast, wild and fun, despite some boring side missions. | Read review |

IGN Spain | Marco Gonzálvez | 9 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Gears delves into the Turn-based strategy genre with a game extremely faithful to the core saga, fun shootings that keep the essence of those played in the third person, but somewhat repetitive after a few hours. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Dan Lix | 4.7 / 5 stars | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is a fantastic strategy game and an excellent addition to the Gears of War series, and I’d recommend it to anyone who is either a fan of Gears of War, or to the XCOM series style of game. | Read review |
INDIANTVCZ | Adam Bárta | 8 / 10 | 05-06-2020 | Gears Tactics is a great fast-paced strategy game with cleverly designed systems to keep the player engaged. It won’t go without its flaws such as mandatory side missions and some UI imperfections. It successfully innovates by the absence of the grid system which gives the player more freedom and makes for a better experience. Overall Gears Tactics is definitely a game worth playing. | Read review |

MSPoweruser | Lewis White | 9.7 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Tactics is a fantastic conversion of Xbox’s iconic franchise into a more thoughtful gameplay setting. It’s a spin-off that takes everything Gears is known for and masterfully retools it for an engrossing strategy game that we’ll likely be playing for years to come. With a Locust enemy that’s finally more imposing than General RAAM and a lovable cast of characters, it’s also a game that continues to tell an epic, cinematic story that strategy games have never had the budget to do before. This is everything you love about Gears, you just have to think a bit more. | Read review |
New Game Network | Alex Varankou | 72 / 100 | 04-27-2020 | Gears Tactics is a worthwhile spinoff that does a great job of integrating key franchise elements into a different genre. The story is shallow and the missions get quite repetitive, but fans of turn based tactics should get some gory fun out of this one. | Read review |

Pardis Game | Alireza Abroshan | 8.5 / 10 | 05-21-2020 | This title can be regarded as a huge success for a spin-off, and is quite enjoyable. PCGamesN | Richard Scott-Jones | 7 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | Its core combat is probably better than XCOM’s. If only it did a little more with it, Gears Tactics would be one of the greats.Richard Scott-Jones | Read review |
Player.it | Diego Del Buono | 8.5 / 10 | 04-27-2020 | It’s not always easy for the game development team to decide to deviate so much from one of their flagship products, but in this case the audacity has been able to pay off by offering a title that will not disappoint old fans but rather is destined to become a real must for lovers of strategy in general. The boss fights and variety of missions, as well as the whole lookout game, are additions that make the genre even more dynamic and fun that gives you a slight vibe of Starship Troopers. Comparison with other titles is inevitable but Gears Tactics manages to emerge and even lay the foundations for future projects that we honestly can’t wait to try. | Read review |
