Gorgeous grand strategy with atmosphere, depth and replayability—but it needs more time to reach its potential.
Endless Space 2 is a beautiful and capable 4X game, with memorable personality that’s seemingly calculated down to the pixel level. It doesn’t deviate much from the genre’s norms, but it delivers a generally satisfying 4X experience with only a few missteps in combat and diplomacy. Provided you’re also okay with tackling a steep learning curve, it’s also a satisfying entry point for the genre.
Endless Space 2 provides loads of 4X strategizing and space-opera-styled storytelling in this epic about building an intergalactic empire.

3DNews | Олег Москалев | 8 / 10 | 05-27-2017 | There are no drastic changes in Endless Space 2. Amplitude focused on everything that was good in original game and made it all just a little bit better. If that’s what you’re after, then you won’t be disappointed. | Read review |
Areajugones | Jose Antonio Marín | 8 / 10 | 05-18-2017 | Endless Space 2 is the game that the fans of the 4X genre wanted and expected. Not only it is great for the most experienced players, but also has a style that is perfect for the newcomers. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Zubi Khan | 8 / 10 | 06-08-2017 | Endless Space 2 is one of the strongest 4X games in recent memory, even if it’s not the deepest. | Read review |
COGconnected | Alexander Thomas | 84 / 100 | 05-18-2017 | With a much improved tutorial advisor, fantastic graphics, and race specific storylines, Endless Space 2 is a galactic adventure worth having. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Zoe Hawkins | 7.5 / 10 | 06-29-2017 | A truly deep and compelling 4X game that will keep players busy for hours. What it’s lacking in ability to pick up and play, it makes up for by delivering a beautiful experience for those who are willing to keep at it until they understand it all. | Read review |
Cubed3 | Eric | 5 / 10 | 05-26-2017 | This verdict is highly caveated. Short of the balance issues, and, of course, these massive game-breaking bugs, Endless Space 2 is actually really great. It hits many right notes of the 4X genre. It is fun and hours slip away. However, seeing games that are clearly not ready to be released getting shipped off, only to have massive fan complaints and hotfix after hotfix is a very bad trend in the industry. It is hard to recommend a game, no matter how fun it may be, when it can’t be finished. | Read review |
Destructoid | Kevin McClusky | 8.5 / 10 | 05-18-2017 | I had a lot of fun with Endless Space 2, and I’m looking forward to putting more time in with it. Despite my initial reservations about diving into the deep end, I soon found myself invested in the stories that came from my triumphs and failures. There’s a lot to like here if you give it a chance, and even if strategy isn’t your preferred genre, you might find that it’s worth your time to give ES2 a shot. | Read review |
Game Debate | Felix Nova | 9 / 10 | 05-27-2017 | If you’re looking for a replayable sci-fi strategy game to grab a hold of your man hours, then Endless Space 2 will provide you with all you desire. Endless Space 2 sets a new and beautiful benchmark for the 4X genre, masterfully laid out and something future 4x developers will enjoy learning from. | Read review |
Game Revolution | James Kozanitis | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-18-2017 | And I must again praise Endless Space 2’s depth, that seems … well … endless. I’ve put more than 40 hours into Endless Space 2, and, while I still feel like there are things I don’t understand and I’m not always sure if I’m doing the right thing, I also don’t want to stop playing. Endless Space 2 is addictive, rewarding and substantive, and it stands tall in the 4X genre even among the greats of Stellaris and Civilization. | Read review |
Gameblog | Camille Allard | 8 / 10 | 05-23-2017 | Endless Space 2 is the quintessence of the 4X genre. Despite confusing menus, some bugs and some issues with its combat system, it offers a deep and complex gameplay, and a captivating experience. | Read review |
GameCrate | Christopher Atwood | 8.8 / 10 | 05-30-2017 | Endless Space 2 is an exciting fresh page for the 4X genre, delivering an immersive strategy experience with a subtle but strong ability to keep you playing not just for hours, not just for weeks, but for years. The title offers hundreds of ways to play, an interesting player-driven narrative experience, and above all the addictive turn-based gameplay we’ve grown to love. | Read review |
GameGrin | Marcello Perricone | 7.5 / 10 | 06-14-2017 | A charming title with a breathtakingly good interface, Endless Space 2 is a clear improvement over its predecessor. | Read review |

GamingTrend | Ron Burke | 85 / 100 | 05-22-2017 | Endless Space 2 brings 4X to life with a gorgeous presentation and a host of new approaches to a well-established genre. While a few bugs remain, Amplitude has patched the game twice in the last week. By all accounts, Endless Space 2 is easily one of the best examples of the genre. | Read review |
IGN | Leif Johnson | 7.9 / 10 | 05-24-2017 | Endless Space 2 is a beautiful and capable 4X game, with memorable personality that’s seemingly calculated down to the pixel level. IGN Italy | Claudio Chianese | 9.3 / 10 | 05-25-2017 | Endless Space 2 isn’t just a very solid 4X game. It’s also quite the narrative experience. Every faction has a story to tell, and every game will see you playing to their strengths while learning that story. | Read review |
IGN Spain | Jose A. Rodríguez | 7 / 10 | 05-23-2017 | Long and enjoyable, Endless Space 2 offers the user a deep experience full of options and with thousands of objectives to achieve. It is also hard and very, very slow. | Read review |
Impulsegamer | Chris O’Connor | 4.5 / 5 stars | 06-07-2017 | Civilization in space with a touch of Game Of Thrones politicking. | Read review |
JVL | Spike | 8.5 / 10 | 06-20-2017 | Amplitude made a great work, Endless Space 2 is a good successor of is big brother and bring a lot of new stuff for the gamers. A game who’s easy enough for beginner and really interesting if you dig upon the gameplay, thanks to a nicely done politic system. If the developer can correct some bugs, we can have an epic 4X game for the fans. Anyway we hope the combat system will change to something more visceral on an hypotetic third game. | Read review |
Kotaku | Luke Plunkett | Recommended | 05-22-2017 | Endless Space 2 is now one of the real standard-bearers in the 4X space. While some of its more direct elements come up short, its implementation of politics is a masterstroke, adding depth and complexity to part of a game that often feels like an arbitrary chore. | Read review |
Metro GameCentral | GameCentral | 8 / 10 | 05-23-2017 | One of the best sci-fi strategy games ever made, with an impressive amount of storytelling variety and accessible controls. | Read review |
Nexus | Gregg Barlow | 9 / 10 | 05-28-2017 | All in all, Amplitude have taken care to craft a massive 4X game, building on their experience to deliver a fantastic experience. | Read review |
Pardis Game | Hamed Zahedi | 8.5 / 10 | 06-21-2017 | In overall, “Endless Space 2” has become a successful game for it’s creators and has put it’s players in a strategic field by mixing 4 elements of strategy consisting of: Discovering, Developing, Exploiting and Ruining. Keeping tactical challenges alongside various missions and a powerful narration has caused it’s players to feel more adventurous and overcome their fears by exploring more the galaxy awaiting them. Without any doubts, Endless Space 2 could be the flagship of the 4X space sci-fi games that challenges the mind about tactics and politics and only the best, the most skilled and the true strategic players are capable of beating it. | Read review |
PC Gamer | Chris Thursten | 77 / 100 | 05-19-2017 | Gorgeous grand strategy with atmosphere, depth and replayability—but it needs more time to reach its potential. | Read review |
PC Invasion | Peter Parrish | 8 / 10 | 05-18-2017 | Endless Space 2 bolsters Amplitude’s reputation for superb, unique 4X faction design. The interwoven narrative and management mechanics produce a universe within which its easy to lose yourself, but some lingering bugs suggest the game may have launched prematurely. | Read review |
PCGamesN | Robert Zak | 8 / 10 | 05-08-2017 | Just as Endless Legend and Civilization V are now far superior to how they started, so can Endless Space 2 be. It’s odd to talk of foundations in something so markedly floaty and space-based, so perhaps it’s better to think of this as an outpost, plonked down on a planet waiting to be colonised. It’s a fertile planet, sure, but one that’s yet to be fully exploited. | Read review |
PCWorld | Hayden Dingman | 4 / 5 stars | 06-01-2017 | Endless Space 2 is the rare 4X game where the writing is better than the strategy—though the strategy is still pretty decent. | Read review |
Player2.net.au | James Swinbanks | Not Recommended | 07-02-2017 | I consider myself a fan of the genre, and whilst discovering new systems and tactics was compelling at first, it didn’t take long to turn into something completely aimless, thus losing its ability to hold my interest. | Read review |
Rock, Paper, Shotgun | Fraser Brown | Recommended | 05-18-2017 | From the interface to economics, it sports some of the best systems I’ve seen in a 4X game, and like Endless Legend, it’s simultaneously confident and experimental, finding new ways to spice up a genre that can too often be bland. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Daniele Spelta | 8.5 / 10 | 05-25-2017 | Endless Space 2 is an amplified journey across the galasy, it doesn’t reinvents the 4x strategy style, but everything it does, it does good. | Read review |
TechRaptor | Alec Blouin | 7.5 / 10 | 08-16-2017 | Endless Space 2 is a standard 4X that happens to contain some of the most artfully constructed lore and environment we’ve seen in years. Marred by strange design choices and often cookie cutter empire management, Endless Space 2 will nonetheless leave you thinking about the various characters you meet for a long time. | Read review |
The Escapist | Joshua Vanderwall | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-18-2017 | Endless Space 2 doesn’t sugarcoat the 4x experience, and it can be daunting when you realize that all 600 icons on the screen have a tooltip you need to read to make just this one decision. Despite all that complexity, none of it seems unnecessary, which means every one of those tooltips has essential information. | Read review |
The Games Machine | Daniele Dolce | 8.8 / 10 | 05-28-2017 | Endless Space 2 is the best videogame ever developed by Amplitude Studios. It’s a 4X strategic game with a deep (and unusual, for this kind of productions) storyline and an almost flawless gameplay. | Read review |
USgamer | Mike Williams | 4 / 5 stars | 05-25-2017 | Where other 4X titles lean towards a more utilitarian presentation, Endless Space 2 starts with a great 4X game and layers on good art, great writing, and excellent UI design. There’s a wide variety of play in the available factions and a deep political system that underpins the entire thing. The combat disappoints and the AI could use some improvement, but Amplitude is known for its expansions and improvements. What’s here is already a 4X class act. | Read review |
VG247 | Alex Donaldson | Recommended | 05-19-2017 | Come prepared to learn and Endless Space 2 will impress, then sink its claws deep. | Read review |
Wccftech | Chris Wray | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2017 | Endless Space 2 is a great 4X strategy game that is almost guaranteed to improve. While not free of bugs, including a few large ones, it’s a title that oozes character. Each and every game offers the flexibility to play the way you want to and adapt as you please, while offering some excellently told stories with every game also offering a fresh emergent story to boot. | Read review |
