Kakarot is mostly successful in distilling the story of Dragon Ball Z into a 40-hour action-RPG, but the RPG elements are messy, filled with muddy progression and systems that feel useless.

A competent adaptation of the original anime but there’s a serious danger of déjà vu even for series fans, and the solid but unremarkable action is unable to overcome it.
Some of the content is hit or miss, but the story is told nicely throughout and ends up being an enjoyable way to relive this saga.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is not the anime game to end all anime games. It’s not going to convert any non-believers or onboard them into this decades-old classic universe. Even as someone who still re-watches DBZ, it can be grating at times — but the juice is mostly worth the squeeze.

33bits | Rubén Rionegro | 75 / 100 | 03-19-2020 | The universe of Dragon Ball as we’ve never seen it before, totally explorable and fully of tributes to the franchise. Its biggest flaw is that as a role-playing game it doesn’t measure up, either in combat or in exploration, remaining a mere curiosity for the fan of the animated series. | Read review |
3DNews | Иван Бышонков | 6 / 10 | 01-26-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will help the newcomers to experience all of the iconic battles of the anime, or will remind old fans how great they were. However, empty open world, useless RPG elements and a bunch of unnecessary gameplay mechanics weigh this game down. | Read review |

Areajugones | Cristian M. Villa | 8.5 / 10 | 01-16-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a huge step forward in the titles centered on the narrative of Akira Toriyama, and although there are moments that manage to live up to the original anime or even exceed it, the general feeling does not end up being so voluminous. | Read review |
Atomix | Rodolfo León | 75 / 100 | 01-20-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is one of the best Dragon Ball games out there, but leaving behind the Dragon Ball name, it’s one of the most generic and uninspired titles out there and could have benefitted greatly with a little more time in the oven. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Dean James | 4 / 5 stars | 01-22-2020 | While the popular Xenoverse series utilized the RPG genre to try something different, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot offers a more traditional retelling of the series in a single player only experience that should at least get the hardcore fans of the series excited to experience this adventure yet again. | Read review |

But Why Tho? | Charles Hartford | 7 / 10 | 01-22-2020 | Is it perfect? No. But Dragon Ball Z has always been a franchise that has thrived despite its shortcomings. And perhaps it is in that way that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot most perfectly captures its source material. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Manuel Barthes | 8.5 / 10 | 01-20-2020 | It took a long time, but with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Bandai Namco finally fulfills the wishes of many fans. Even if the story is already known several times, the combat system and the game world provide exciting moments and know how to convince connoisseurs as well as newcomers. In addition, the Japanese developers have learned from the mistakes of various anime implementations and thereby created a gaming experience that more than lives up to the template. | Read review |

Checkpoint Gaming | Lise Leitner | 7 / 10 | 01-28-2020 | The game has some shortcomings as an open world RPG. And that remains true whether you’re an old-time fan or a complete newcomer to the series. | Read review |
Chicas Gamers | Adrián de Francisco | Recommended | 01-20-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a huge ARPG game that has become the dream of every Dragon Ball fan. CyberConnect2 gives us a game that does not focus solely on combat and cinematics to give us a long adventure, but a title in which we grow with our character, which sometimes is as if we had an interactive chapter in front of us and that is full of touches of nostalgia through the melodies of the series or mythical dialogues in the cinematics. | Read review |
COGconnected | Erin Castillo | 77 / 100 | 01-24-2020 | All in all Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an engaging and immersive experience that transports the fans back to the very beginning and for me, that came with a heavy serving of nostalgia. | Read review |
Critical Hit | Darryn Bonthuys | 8.5 / 10 | 01-29-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a buffet of gameplay, ideas and diversions. It is a game that makes no bones at who it has in its crosshairs, aimed squarely at the fans who have made Dragon Ball Z the global phenomenon that it is. Much like its source material, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot isn’t without faults but its enduring spirit of facing overwhelming odds head-on and conquering them, is one lesson that it has succeeded in learning. | Read review |

DASHGAMER.com | Dan Rizzo | 9 / 10 | 01-28-2020 | While we sat there for many an hour watching Goku yell and scream over an exaggerated amount of episodes to finally hit Super Saiyan on Frieza’s pale and purple behind, being able to physically land the final blow on evil emperor makes everything come full circle in what I consider to be the ultimate nostalgic set piece of any fan of this incredible franchise. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, is a must have and must play experience for fans of this generous and enthralling generational franchise. | Read review |

Digital Chumps | Alex Tudor | 8 / 10 | 06-10-2019 | DragonBall Z: Kakarot isn’t necessarily trying to reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t have to. After years of adding more and more “new” lore to the canon, it’s nice to take a trip down memory lane and re-experience the characters and story that makes DragonBall so special. While the open world isn’t necessarily the most engaging aspect of the game, the combat is epic and the characters are always entertaining. Simply put DragonBall Z: Kakarot is fun and is sure to please new and old fans alike. | Read review |
Digitally Downloaded | Pierre-Yves Lanthier | 4 / 5 stars | 01-27-2020 | All in all, while Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot doesn’t really do anything new “overall”, it’s still an amazing time because of the way that everything has been put together. Those new to the series and long time fans alike have plenty to find and enjoy, as the pacing is just right to both let you relive some of the iconic fights of the series, and just live a little with your favourite characters. | Read review |

Everyeye.it | Giuseppe Arace | 7.5 / 10 | 01-16-2020 | Pleasant to play and characterized by a combat system in fair balance between simplicity and spectacularity, Kakarot is however a title with ambitions that are sometimes too submissive, which are lazily content with proposing rather bland secondary missions, a discontinuous rhythm and a system of growth that is not as thorough as it should have been. | Read review |

Game Revolution | Jason Faulkner | 4 / 5 stars | 01-24-2020 | This game is aimed at a particular audience, and those who get a rush of nostalgia from seeing Goku and his friends duke it out with the universe’s biggest baddies will love it. Others may need a proper introduction with the series before they soak up everything DBZ: Kakarot has to offer. | Read review |
Gameblog | Romain Mahut | 8 / 10 | 01-16-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the best way to play through the entirety of DBZ’s story. No other Dragon Ball game even comes close when it comes to immersion. While imperfect (the frequent and long loading screens are a pain for example), the game is a must have for any fan who has ever dreamed of living in the Dragon World. | Read review |
Gamefa | Mostafa Zahedi | 7.5 / 10 | 01-23-2020 | Dragon Ball Z:Kakarot might not be “the best” Dragon Ball Z we ever played, but it’s definitely one of the best of series in years. Due to tons of various contents in the game, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot can takes you to a long entertaining journey. Although it seemed extremely difficult at first, developers somehow managed to tell the story of the anime (which is extremely long) in a single game which is impressive. The only real issues with the game are lack of depth and complicity in gameplayand repetitive combat encounters. Either you are fan of series or just want to play a beautiful anime game, Dragon Ball Z:Kakarot is a good choice for you to try. | Read review |
GameGrin | Francis Kenna | 5.5 / 10 | 01-26-2020 | It’s just not particularly interesting to play through. There’s certainly some enjoyment for fans to latch onto, but it’s hard to say if that’s enough when the game feels skin-deep in its appeal. | Read review |
GameMAG | Unknown | 6 / 10 | 02-03-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a good gift for fans of anime and manga, containing a huge number of references and fanservice. However, more seasoned veterans of the series may not be as easily impressed. Fluid, fast, and visually stunning combat combined with some intriguing ideas gives Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot plenty to root for, but it still doesn’t feel as fleshed out and creative as its Xenoverse cousin. | Read review |

GamingTrend | Sean Anthony | 80 / 100 | 01-25-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the best representation of the series’ storyline in over twenty years of games. While animations in cutscenes may be too stiff and there are occasional bugs, the simple yet difficult to master gameplay and the sidequests that succeed in building a world we’ve already come to love make this a must-play Dragon Ball experience. | Read review |
GBAtemp | Eric Zander | 8.5 / 10 | 02-12-2020 | This is the DBZ RPG that we have been waiting for since the Legacy of Goku series on the Gameboy Advance. INDIANTVCZ | Petr Duppal | 6 / 10 | 03-18-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is not an above average RPG, even from far away. But the developers’ commitment to creating a world full of references to the famous brand enhances the game itself. We recommend 6 points out of 10, but if you are a fan of the series, there is nothing to think about and you will definitely enjoy the game. But this is not a title suitable for newcomers to the series. MSPoweruser | Lewis White | 8 / 10 | 01-20-2020 | While the rejection of these moments of Dragon Ball Z’s story is upsetting, Kakarot still plays well. It’s the Dragon Ball Z game we’ve always wanted; warts and all, Kakarot is hands-down a ballistic and powerful adaptation of one of anime’s greatest shows. Just like how CyberConnect 2’s Naruto games vastly improved by the time the fourth and final entry came around, Kakarot only requires minimal tweaking to become one of DBZ’s greatest games. | Read review |
New Game Network | Josh Hinke | 66 / 100 | 01-29-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot isn’t a bad game as much as it’s a boring one. The adventure portion feels like it was taken out of the oven a bit early, however, and we’re left with a Dragon Ball game that feels closer to what came before instead of being something completely new. If you love the previous Dragon Ball games before this, then Dragon Ball Z Kakarot is another worthy title to add to your collection. If you were expecting a different Dragon Ball game with highly polished adventure and RPG mechanics, however, just falls a bit short of reaching a new power level. | Read review |

The Outerhaven Productions | Karl Smart | 4 / 5 stars | 02-05-2020 | At the end of it all, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is just the same old Dragon Ball Z story with the Dragon Ball Xenoverse cost of paint and a much shinier graphical upgrade. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Miguel Moran | 7 / 10 | 01-16-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot displays unparalleled care and respect for the iconic story arcs it adapts. The original music is there, original Dragon Ball characters return, and pivotal moments are gorgeously animated. If these were stories being presented in video game format for the first time, it would be a mind-blowing experience. Unboxholics | Δημήτρης Σαλαμάρας | Not Recommended | 01-28-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is by far the most ambitious anime game to date, showing great passion for Akira Toriyama’s work. It has a vast and rich open-world, but sadly the poorly implemented side quests and other mistakes hold the experience back. | Read review |
USgamer | Mike Williams | 3 / 5 stars | 01-23-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Karakot distills 291 episodes of Dragon Ball Z down into a 40-hour action-RPG experience. While the pacing is a bit off, seeing the story of Goku and friends told in wide swaths mostly works. The combat also manages to capture the feel of the series in certain boss fights. Unfortunately, the RPG side of things is lacking, with muddy progression, systems that feel useless, and random enemy encounters that can grow tedious. It’s a good start, but more training is needed to reach its final form. | Read review |
VG247 | James Billcliffe | Not Recommended | 01-24-2020 | But whether you’ve grown up with Goku and friends, or you’re a first timer who’s never fancied sitting through 300 episodes without getting to play a part in the action, this is still a great way to experience the classic story. | Read review |
VGChartz | Nicholas Taylor | 7 / 10 | 02-16-2020 | Saying that a game based on the franchise feels fresh might sound like a hard sell, but that’s what Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot manages to achieve. | Read review |
Video Chums | A.J. Maciejewski | 8.1 / 10 | 01-27-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot may not have the deepest combat mechanics but there’s no denying just how exciting it is to play. From its jaw-dropping action to its top-notch presentation, this is one epic RPG that fans and newcomers alike can easily enjoy. | Read review |
Wccftech | Dave Aubrey | 7 / 10 | 01-20-2020 | Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is a mixed bag. If you’re a Dragon Ball fan, this game will offer so many nice moments and make you occasionally beam from ear to ear. But then during exploration and combat, things quickly become tedious. At full price, it’s hard to recommend this game, but when it becomes affordable in a sale, it’ll be hard for fans to resist. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Todd Rigney | 4.5 / 5 stars | 01-29-2020 | Outside of some technical hiccups and some boring fetch quests, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot’s colorful presentation and over-the-top battles should appeal to hardcore fans and baby-faced newcomers alike. | Read review |
