The story is uneven and gameplay is marred by tiresome quick time events and awkward controls. But despite its flaws, Detroit: Become Human is the finest game Quantic Dream has ever made.

Its big themes are glibly handled, though this is still Quantic Dream’s most credible and satisfying interactive yarn by far.
Quantic Dream has mastered making a very playable, even enjoyable interactive experience. But there’s always this performative feeling behind it — always this reminder that, for as much as someone wants to help out a cause, there’s a difference between saying it and doing it.
Detroit: Become Human really is like sitting down and playing a TV box set. It’s a technical masterpiece on PS4 with movie quality sound, lighting and camera work, which is backed up by some top quality action and a wonderfully evocative score. Detroit really worked for me; I was gripped by the story and connected with the characters, but I think some players may have a hard time relating to Kara, Markus, and Connor. That’s to be expected. After all, we’re only human.

33bits | Diego Sierra | 80 / 100 | 06-09-2018 | Detroit: Become Human forces us to constantly make decisions that will test our morale and our ability to face the unpredictable consequences that result from them, but Quantic Dream continues without hitting the right key. This latest work represents a small step forward for the “interactive drama” typical of the French studio, but its proposal, so dependent on the narrative, falters once again because of the problems generated by a script that is left at half gas and which in This occasion is too simplistic and Manichean. | Read review |
3DNews | Иван Бышонкoв | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is a great prediction of our nearest future, where rise of the unemployment among humans will be caused by an ever-increasing automation. But most importantly, it’s an emotional story about the cruelty of our world, about fighting for freedom — and a price you have to pay to gain it. And the best Quantic Dream game to date. | Read review |

Areajugones | Cristian M. Villa | 9.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Quantic Dream surpasses everything it has done before with Detroit: Become Human. A huge script allows for a thrilling story to have multiple layers that, at the same time, deal with topics such as slavery, the human condition or the concept of identity. A real masterpiece of the genre. | Read review |
Ars Technica | Kyle Orland | Not Recommended | 05-24-2018 | Try it if you really want to see how hard it is to make branching narrative work on this scale. Otherwise, just catch up on Westworld. | Read review |
Atomix | Pamela Lima | 87 / 100 | 05-24-2018 | Despite being too similar to Heavy Rain during its first hours, Detroit: Become Human is an exciting, deep and controversial look to what technology has made of us. David Cage and Quantic Dream made a wonderful story that’s completely worth playing. | Read review |
Attack of the Fanboy | Dylan Siegler | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human] is a social revolution simulator, where most of your choices actually matter, the story and characters are engaging and moving and the amount of narrative content is incredibly massive. | Read review |
AusGamers | Steve Farrelly | 7 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | The problem is our robot horse needs QTEs as well to get going and without enough blue blood, bled by actual gamers, it’s a hard task and road to Maple Syrup ahead. | Read review |
BaziCenter | Bahram Bigharaz | 8 / 10 | 05-27-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is a movie you are directing. Bazimag | Hamidreza Ghaneei | 9.5 / 10 | 06-03-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is an exceptional video game for gamers who enjoy interactive dramas. It follows in the footsteps of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls but ultimately it brings a far greater experience to the table. it’s filled with lots of memorable and inspiring moments and thanks to great acting from the actors, emotions and feelings come to life better than expected. | Read review |
Cerealkillerz | Gabriel Bogdan | 7.8 / 10 | 05-27-2018 | Detroit: Become Human manages to destroy a perfect story setup with a simple “right in the face” presentation of a complex theme despite a great acting performance of the main characters. The many optional outcomes during the playthrough lose lots of replay value because of that and make it probably the worst Quantic Dream game so far. There are still good visuals and enough entertainment for one playthrough but it doesn’t deliver on anything else. | Read review |
CGMagazine | Bryan Calhoun | 7 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit Become Human is a beautiful jig-saw puzzle yet deformed puzzle. The individual parts look pretty, but once you try and piece it together, it all falls apart. | Read review |
Cheat Code Central | Jenni Lada | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is a game that can be rather difficult to classify. It usually improves upon the forms of storytelling and gameplay found in Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, though character movements can still be frustrating and some stories are better than others. It still relies on sensational concepts and topics to get reactions from an audience, with some androids’ routes more effectively and tactfully employing them than others. It is a more diverse game, both in terms of the kinds of characters displayed and the sorts of choices people can make. Quantic Dream’s formula is evolving, even if it does rely on some of the same crutches. | Read review |

cublikefoot | Chase Ferrin | 8 / 10 | 07-17-2020 | Detroit: Become Human is an easy recommendation for fans of story-driven games. It’s not only one of the best looking games I’ve played all year, but it manages to do so with a story that is both engaging and makes use of some top-tier storytelling methods. It is a massive step up from the studio’s previous two titles in just about every department. However, it isn’t free from issue entirely, still suffering from some writing hiccups and the occasional technical issue. | Read review |

Destructoid | Chris Carter | 7 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human, like most Quantic Dream games, is filled with muddled symbolism and a spark of hope amidst its most interesting universe yet. It doesn’t have anything particular new to say, but it delivers in terms of drama, to the point where I started a second playthrough shortly after my first seven hour-ish run. It’s flawed, but coherent, which is an upgrade. | Read review |
Digiato | Shayan Ziaei | 82 / 100 | 05-31-2018 | In terms of narration, Detroit Become Human is probably the best interactive drama you’ll come across. general atmosphere of the game is not as unforgettable as Heavy Rain or even Fahrenheit, but there is some kind of maturity in narration that has never been seen in this particular genre. | Read review |
Digital Chumps | Eric Layman | 6.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is evidence that breathtaking production isn’t effective camouflage for anemic dialogue and abysmal writing. By co-opting famous racial prejudices and projecting all of them onto society’s assimilation of androids, Detroit spoils its power to create convincing drama. The sense of agency and control over its story remains exciting, but archetypal plotting and cosmetic platitudes leave Detroit without much to say about anything. | Read review |

Echo Boomer | David Fialho | Recommended | 05-27-2018 | Detroit: Become Human feels like the best Quantic Dream has ever put in all of their games. EGM | Michael Goroff | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is a testament to how far the genre of interactive narrative storytelling has come and, at the same time, how much further it can go. While it might still suffer from some annoying QTE moments and a few narrative speedbumps, it delivers on promises that many other games in this genre make yet fail to keep, especially in how the choices you make can lead to very different experiences down the line. | Read review |

Game Debate | Jon Sutton | 6.5 / 10 | 12-22-2019 | That’s not to say there’s nothing to get out of Detroit: Become Human. At a superficial level it looks fantastic, your choices can often feel hefty and impactful, and the overall presentation value is comfortably in the very top tier of adventure games. But it is a game you may have to enjoy through gritted teeth; either raging or outright laughing at the clunky metaphors and hamfisted messages. Enjoy it I did though, honestly, even if it wasn’t perhaps for the reasons Cage may have been hoping for. | Read review |

GRYOnline.pl | Michał Grygorcewicz | 7.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Learning the story of Kara, Connor and Markus in Detroit: Become Human was a pleasant and engaging affair. I really grew fond of the heroes and I pondered over every decision. Quantic Dream’s new game is a really good interactive movie, and the degree of non-linearity is amazing. It’s a pity that the story itself is totally bland, obvious and downright disappointing; the characters are flat and cliché, and the game doesn’t deliver any meaningful message – it’s almost baffling how the authors could have missed such an opportunity to make a statement. | Read review |

IGN | Lucy O’Brien | 8 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is a poignantly pulpy interactive sci-fi drama where your choices can impact events to a greater and more satisfying degree than in most games of this type. Though I wish its story had been handled with a softer touch, especially considering the subtlety that can be conveyed through its tech and performances, its well-written and acted central trio were vital enough to me that I found myself feeling genuine distress when they were in danger and a sense of victory when they triumphed. Most importantly, Detroit offers a multitude of transparent branching paths that entice further playthroughs, and choices have a permanence that raise the stakes throughout. | Read review |

IGN Middle East | Moustafa Gad | 7.8 / 10 | 05-25-2018 | Detroit has produced an exciting dramatic story based on fictional events but very close to our reality. A group of well-designed characters, both in terms of dramatic appearance and background, the way they interact with events, the dazzling cinematic level of film and the player’s options directly affect the story, The game delays procrastination in some seasons and the difficulty of controlling some situations even though the title depends entirely on the options that appear on the screen, in addition to the expected surprises at the end of the story and some positions that are not explained satisfactorily. | Read review |

Impulsegamer | Edwin Millheim | 3.9 / 5 stars | 05-26-2018 | Detroit Become Human is one of the great games of 2018. If you are still on the fence about it, then check out the free Demo with the first chapter. This way you can tell if it is your thing or not. After you have finished playing this game and maybe another shot, you’ll be missing this world dearly. At this time there has been no word on if there will be any DLC planned for Detroit Become Human which is a shame. I know I for one would love to see Conner in action a bit more and it would include more barricaded suspects, people in crisis missions and other hostage situations. That would be a cool DLC. Nonetheless, Detroit Become Human ticks all the right boxes when it comes to one of the great games of 2018. | Read review |
Jump Dash Roll | Luciano Howard | 9 / 10 | 05-30-2018 | Detroit is simply unlike anything else available. Kotaku | Kirk Hamilton | Not Recommended | 05-24-2018 | Detroit tells a story of robots who look and act relatively human, making their way through a nonsense world where everyone, even the humans, doesn’t actually look or act human at all. It’s a fragmented radio broadcast from a valley within the uncanny valley, so many layers deep in unreality that it could never hope to make it out intact. | Read review |
LevelUp | Luis Sánchez | 8.5 / 10 | 01-01-1970 | Detroit: Become Human is a design achievement in which every choice you make matters. Next Gen Base | Ben Ward | 7.5 / 10 | 05-23-2018 | As an unashamed fan of Quantic Dream’s previous output, Detroit: Become Human is a mixed bag. On one hand, there is a continuation of the work that they’ve done with the previous titles, and they have crafted a wonderfully bleak world with Detroit. While it doesn’t quite push the boundaries as much as Heavy Rain, there are some interesting ideas planted in the early stages of the story that never blossom fully, but still gives a somewhat satisfying conclusion, regardless of how you decide to play. On the other hand, the occasionally frustrating control issues and borderline laughable moments in the script made me shake my head on more than one occasion. It’s a real shame, because there is an absolutely brilliant game tucked away somewhere in here. As it stands, it’s only going to be great if you’re willing to look past the obvious inherent flaws. | Read review |

PlayStation Universe | Neil Bolt | 8 / 10 | 07-02-2019 | Quantic Dream has delivered its most consistently focused game to date with Detroit Become Human. It does suffer for some ham-fisted allegory and a couple of instances of appallingly mawkish dialogue, but that never overwhelms the overall enjoyment you get from its entertaining branching narrative. The story is not the most subtle, nor nuanced, take on discrimination, slavery, and machine self-awareness you’ll find, but it is often surprisingly poignant and touching when Cage and his team nail the blend of video game and cinematic experience. | Read review |

pressakey.com | Tim Bissinger | Not Recommended | 06-05-2018 | Detroit: Become Human wants to tell an emotional story about existence and the self-finding of machines as artificial life, but degrates them to projection screens for the players’ own human will, making them nothing more than lifeless tools. Push Square | Sammy Barker | 7 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is vintage Quantic Dream, delivering a multifaceted choose-your-own-adventure that’s both ambitious and somewhat of an acquired taste. | Read review |
Rock, Paper, Shotgun | Alice Bell | Recommended | 12-17-2019 | Detroit is a perfect game to livestream, or play with three mates and half a bottle of tequila – but if you tell me you genuinely think the story is well done, I will immediately be sus that you, yourself, are an android poorly trying to replicate human behaviour. | Read review |
Saudi Gamer | عصام الشهوان | 8 / 10 | 05-25-2018 | A cinematic approach, meaningful choices and the way the destiny of the three main characters intertwine are this game’s most appealing aspects, but fiddly controls and an eventful but not necessarily original nor subtle diminished the experience slightly. This is still a step up from the developer’s previous effort Heavy Rain. | Read review |
Screen Rant | Tyler Treese | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | A story of three androids. | Read review |
SECTOR.sk | Tomáš Kuník | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Quantic Dreams and David Cage brings us into the future where androids walk alongside humans. And everything depends on the choices you make. | Read review |
Shacknews | Bill Lavoy | 9 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | What makes Detroit: Become Human a great game, though, is that even after going back through alternate narrative branches and winding down my play time, I’m still invested. The world that Quantic Dream gave me to explore is only a short leap from the one we’re living in now, and the ideas presented have left me contemplating the role AI could play in our lives sooner rather than later. | Read review |
Sirus Gaming | May Alturas | 9.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human clearly lets my genuine emotion out of me, I wasn’t sure if I was impersonating how the character should have chosen or was it me doing those choices? A lot of those dialogues resonated with me, fighting and arguing over what I should’ve decided. I was so invested in the gameplay that every decision tends to get harder and harder – with an outcome that is so unforgiving and sometimes gratifying. This game is a twisted interpretation of an extreme reality: where segregation, racial discrimination, slavery and mental abuse still exists. I truly believe that a lot of people can identify themselves with the character at some point for so many different reasons and it shows us that wrong decisions are sometimes necessary to get the job done. The algorithm in coming up with those intricate flowchart is a masterpiece on its own. So who says you can’t learn a thing or two in a video game? It even showed me how to become more human. Don’t you agree? | Read review |
Skill Up | Ralph Panebianco | Recommended | 07-29-2018 | There’s a lot that’s gone into this game. A lot. It would be so easy to shrug it off for some of its weaker writing, but to do so would be miss just how big this game is, how much its attempting at any given moment and how much it manages to achieve within that. Detroit is not a perfect game, but if ‘interactive drama’ is emerging game genre, then this is surely the best example of it to date. | Read review |
Slant Magazine | Justin Clark | 2.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | It bares itself emotionally but shines a harsh, unflattering light on David Cage’s deficiencies as a storyteller. | Read review |
SomHráč.sk | Martin Kubeš | 90 / 100 | 05-24-2018 | Quantic Dream strikes again and delivers a great game with no major flaws. If you own a PlayStation 4, you shouldn’t miss David Cage’s latest game, because he has proven he still has something left to say. | Read review |
SpazioGames | Matteo Bussani | 9 / 10 | 04-17-2020 | Detroit Become Human is a game so ambitious, that it can be considered brave to put the player in deeply emotional situations. It’s not forgiving, and the coices are so many that you won’t be free from sacrifice and pain. In a modern scene full of multiplayer stuff, going back to narrative is something we can’t appreciate. | Read review |
Stevivor | Stuart Gollan | 7.5 / 10 | 05-27-2018 | Don’t think I can’t see right through you, Detroit! | Read review |
TechnoBuffalo | Eric Frederiksen | 3 / 5 stars | 05-27-2018 | Like an un-awoken android, Detroit: Become Human is a pretty exterior without anything remotely human inside. | Read review |
Telegraph | Tom Hoggins | 3 / 5 stars | 05-25-2018 | For better or worse, French developer Quantic Dream has forged quite the reputation for its lavish interactive dramas. | Read review |

The Games Machine | Marco Ravetto | 8.9 / 10 | 05-29-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is definitely the highest point reached by David Cage. Some slightly less strong sequences do not affect a gaming experience full of interesting points of view, in which one really has the sensation of making choices. | Read review |
The Jimquisition | Jim Sterling | Not Recommended | 05-27-2018 | Quantic Dream have done it again! And by “done it,” I mean they’ve reminded me of terrible movies. | Read review |
TheSixthAxis | Tuffcub | 9 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human really is like sitting down and playing a TV box set. | Read review |
TrueGaming | حسين الموسى | 9 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | The mix of strong storytelling, great acting and dreamy music led to a grand tale of epic proportions. it is hard to imagine how far video games have come and how much emotions they can invoke. | Read review |
Twinfinite | Yamilia Avendano | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | In any case, I don’t know why exactly Quantic Dream finally made a game I loved (as in, why it took them so long), but as a fan of Until Dawn and The Walking Dead, I’m glad I can actually add a third game to my favorites for this genre. Maybe it’s because all of the characters are supposed to be robots so you’re force-fed story and juxtaposition through analysis, making it easy from a writing perspective. | Read review |
USgamer | Mike Williams | 3.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human improves upon its predecessors by having a cast that you enjoy and want to spend more time around. Quantic Dream’s visual craft and presentation is top-notch, but the writing hasn’t quite caught up yet. It isn’t subtle and some of the references to social ills are amazingly on-the-nose instead of being more unique. It’s better than Beyond: Two Souls, but there’s still room to grow. | Read review |
VG247 | Sam Greer | Not Recommended | 05-24-2018 | The story never finds its footing, its characters never feel fully realised, and as a game, all you’re left with are tiresome quick time events and awkward controls, through linear corridors with tedious puzzles. | Read review |
VGChartz | Jackson Newsome | 8 / 10 | 06-25-2018 | Quantic Dream has outdone itself and delivered another must-play PlayStation exclusive. | Read review |
VGN | Giovanni Marrelli | 9 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human is the best adventure ever created by Quantic Dream, thanks to a rich and complex story that really changes and adapts to every choice you make, allowing you to explore different paths by using the integrated storyflow, from which you can load a single checkpoint and make different choices. | Read review |
Video Chums | A.J. Maciejewski | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Even with its flaws, Detroit: Become Human marks a monumental moment in story-driven gaming. | Read review |
VideoGamer | Colm Ahern | 4 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | Detroit: Become Human wants to move you. It wants to elicit an emotional response through its story. The thing is, it really doesn’t. The flowchart is a nice inclusion and adds some variance, but when the narrative is as cringey and ham-fisted as it is you won’t want to play through it multiple times. | Read review |
Washington Post | Christopher Byrd | Recommended | 05-25-2018 | Like quality junk food, the game was not exactly fulfilling but it was a bingeable experience. | Read review |
Wccftech | Kai Powell | 8.5 / 10 | 05-24-2018 | There are some great story paths to Detroit: Become Human that can lead to different outcomes, but it’s still a Quantic Dream game through and through. Expect a convoluted story that reveals itself through repeated playthroughs, characters that you grow attached to and fear to lose, and enough QTE-driven fights to make your thumbs bleed. | Read review |
We Got This Covered | Shaan Joshi | 4.5 / 5 stars | 05-24-2018 | Despite a few storytelling shortfalls, Detroit: Become Human is stylish and slick from start to finish, and is easily Quantic Dream’s best work to date. | Read review |
WellPlayed | Kieran Stockton | 9 / 10 | 05-23-2018 | What Detroit: Become Human lacks in high concept philosophical musings is more than made up for in the genuine emotional connection to its world and characters buoyed by incredible performances and slick production values | Read review |
